That's exactly what I thought. I am so jealous and broke lol. That's why I was here, to find out how to hand carve a bed frame so I don't have to buy one for $180-$200.
Also, I was just thinking, the people that own these tools can afford to quickly purchase a $200 bed frame from IKEA or Wayfair. Which I cannot. I thought maybe to get some wood from the forest, wash it and seal it with healthy (and non toxic) wood sealant, paint it with healthy wood stain from Ecos brand maybe? Idk... and then find a way to get a hand sander (wearing gloves, mask, and eye goggles) and just carve and sand the wood into a twin bed by hand without power tools. And instead of making the cuts with power tools, sand the grooves so the wood slides in. Maybe I'll have to use my Dad's circle saw or drill to fasten the joints with screws nails or whatever. I don't want to buy the frame from IKEA that is wooden that everyone says falls apart. I also want the wood to last, be sturdy and have that polished European antique ancient old style look to it.
"Diy" pertains mostly to skill(or lack thereof), not equipment. As far as "professional level carpentry tools" go, most of those tools are made to make things faster and easier. That means you can achieve the same goals with less. It just takes a little more work! For example; Instead of planer to smooth wood, you can use a sander. No sander? Well, you can sand by hand. They also sell sanded planks at most big box stores. Instead of the tablesaw, you can use a circular saw, handsaw, jigsaw, or hell, even a sawzall if you're brave enough. Lol Pocket holes aren't exactly necessary. They just hide the screws/bolts and look nicer. So,you shouldn't need a fancy "jig". Very nice presentation, easy to follow from DIY beginner like me, appreciate it. Could you please provide what type of "self-center drill bit" was used in the project? I got a hard time installing the hardware on the desired position accurately. Thanks
This is the exact build I have been wanting to do for my bed, but I have a full size instead of a queen. Would you be able to make the dimensions coincide with a full-size bed? I also want the legs to be higher. Would you think that raising the legs higher would affect the build of the bed? (to be able to place storage underneath)
This is a nice, classy platform and looks great. Nice wood. Pretty corners too. Can you please help those of us without planers and jointers on a simple platform for a queen foam mattress? Thanks so much.
Thanks for explaining how the mistake with the legs came about and how you fixed it. The same thing happens to everyone, and it was really useful hearing about it in your video. Maybe I can prevent my own mistake in the future, who knows!
It looks very simple to make the bed , so how many employees do I need to recruit and how much is the investment money. I think it will last maybe for 30 yrs minimum so then I have all tools prepared again
I don't understand your question. Use the tools you have. This shows you how the bed goes together, it's up to you to figure out how to do it with what you've got.
@@GunflintDesigns Thanks for the perspective this opens up for further questions and some of them without a proper solution due that I need to figure it out myself. The people who are complaining don't necessarily know that. They likely came here, looking for a simple beginners DIY video. Instead they got what is simple, but hardly beginner, because it presumes you have a substantial shop to work in, and large expensive specialty tools like a table jointer and planer. They're not wrong to complain, because it's not what they were looking for. Assume they're not hobby woodworkers and more likely DIY office workers.
Great looking frame! This is the exact type of frame I want to build, but twin size. Can you make plan dimensions for Ikea twin mattress 39" X 76" ? Thank you
Thanks Tony! No plans for a headboard. This was actually for my brother, and he wanted the simplest/cheapest frame I could come up with. That being said, a headboard would attach the exact same way, so if you just made the legs and rail taller in the back, you could turn it into a headboard.
Little blood, sweet and maybe some tears too? Awesome build and I'm needing to build a new bed frame but I'm wanting to put draws or some kind of storage mostly too keep the cats from living under the bed.
I did this one about a year ago. Way more complicated, but it’s got exactly what you’re looking for. Platform Bed With TONS of Storage || Woodworking Project th-cam.com/video/ln02ncwYJIg/w-d-xo.html
What’s with everyone complaining? What are you doing building things without common tools? What I mean by that is that almost everything he did can be done with a hand saw, a screwdriver, nails, a hammer, and just buying most pieces of wood close to length or size. The tools he used only make it easier to do this, but aren't the only way to do it if you have common sense.
Hey, the legs at the end were not the same ones you... oh wait. 🙃 Serious but random question though, do you ever buy furniture anymore or do you just make it all since you have the tools/skills?
Lol, good catch! I can't remember the last time I bought any furniture. I could see potentially buying something if it just needs to be cheap and happen fast, like closet organization or something. But usually I just build exactly what I need.
Yes, there are some big tools in this video, but all of this is attainable with a few basic tools such as a skillsaw, some homemade guides, a little creativity, and some thought. Have done it myself with a homemade table saw, skillsaw, and a router ... because I had a router and wanted to use it. The long-term plan would be to get some better tools and make better stuff of course. 👍
I really appreciate you pointing out the obvious! I figured it was good enough to show the simple materials and construction, but I wasn't prepared for how many people would loose their minds when they realized they had to figure out how to do it with what they already had.
@GunflintDesigns 😅🤣 Isn't that one of the best things about wood working though? Just figuring out how to do stuff, make jigs, problem solve, and have a go. Use some scrap and try something out, try another approach if it doesn't work, work the problem, and a solution will present itself. Other than sometimes having a diagram or plan, there is no absolute right way to do something....well, maybe a few things like safety and keeping your digits, but anything else. Have a crack at it, learn as you go.
I'm glad you found it useful! Once all the parts come together it's incredibly stable. I'm sure it would still work if you just expanded the dimensions to fit a king.
Hi, thanks for the video. I was just thinking... Because of the design of joints where the inner corner of the leg reaches some 1 1/2 inches inward, there has to be significant gap between the side frame and the mattress revealing the grid boards and really taking away from otherwise really nice and clean looking bed frame
I showed this to my wife as an option over buying some junk bed off of Facebook marketplace for my kids (we'd modify it to be twin sized), and she didn't like that it doesn't have a headboard. How would you go about altering this to add a headboard of some kind?
I thought about making a headboard, maybe using an old oak door and attaching it to the wall. We can only have the bed set up in one positive so this would work great for us. Plus it just seems more sturdy.
