Thank you for these fantastic insights. This is one of my favorite musical and had seen it twice and had tickets for Mandy Pantikin as Pierre before the troubles. Love Dave Malloy...

Thanks for the great overview! Even though this production is different, as one of the Dear-Evan-should-never-have-won-the-Tony crowd, I'm just thrilled to be able to finally see this musical (again!).

i liked how the set and the costume of the ensemble kind of represents a rave which lines up with the EDM elements of the score

As a ‘murican, the programs not being complimentary seems insane

I made a video recently about programmes and playbills and was surprised how many people said that they didn't know either!

To summarise my views, I really love this piece. Like you said, it is a 5 star piece of musical theatre writing and one I’ve loved deeply over the past 7 or so years I’ve known it. Seeing it live for the first time (as someone who has notably avoided the bootlegs of the original quite a bit) meant everything to me. I agree the concept of the Russian dolls was the best addition by Tim Sheader. I quite like the visual aesthetic of this production - it was definitely darker, but never felt too dark for me. I liked the costumes and how they were a blend between a modern and period aesthetic and were simultaneously neither - Pierre’s felt the strangest, but I liked the strangeness of it I guess? The element I miss most from the previous iteration (oe what I’ve let myself see of it) is the actor-muso aspect. It was Pierre not playing the piano that I missed most cause it felt so integral to the composition of Pierre and Dust And Ashes, especially the start of those pieces. On the flip side, I adored the moments where actors interacted with their musicians and almost wish there was more of it. As I sat in the balcony, I already anticipated a lack of immersion and appreciated what I did get, but also felt it could go further, even during the Abduction/Balaga, which had it most. For all I can critique it though, I teared up multiple times and this was ultimately the best theatre experience of my life to date. Also, really cool seeing you there aswell and glad you also enjoyed it overall
