  • This video explains how to Separable Verbs (trennbare Verben). These are verbs that appear as one whole word in their infinitive and past participle, but separate at various times in the present and imperfect tenses.
They are reasonably common, so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with them. Recognising and using these verbs will make you sound like a native in no time!
At GCSE, these verbs always impress examiners, and will help to make your work stand out!
Here are some of the most common separable verbs and their past participles:
    1. ankommen (to arrive) - angekommen (sein)
    2. abfahren (to depart) - abgefahren (sein)
    3. aufwachen (to wake up) - aufgewacht (sein)
    4. aufstehen (to get up) - aufgestanden (sein)
    5. ausgehen (to go out) - ausgegangen (sein)
    6. auskommen (to get along) - ausgekommen (sein)
    7. umziehen (to move house) - umgezogen (sein)
    8. einziehen (to move in) - eingezogen (sein)
    9. ausziehen (to move out) - ausgezogen (sein)
    10. einschlafen (to fall asleep) - eingeschlafen (sein)
    11. herkommen (to come here) - hergekommen (sein)
    12. einkaufen (to shop) - eingekauft (haben)
    13. herunterladen (to download) - heruntergeladen (haben)
    14. hochladen (to upload) - hochgeladen (haben)
    15. mitmachen (to participate) - mitgemacht (haben)
    16. zugeben (to admit) - zugegeben (haben)
    17. stattfinden (to take place) - stattgefunden (haben)
    18. teilnehmen (to take part) - teilgenommen (haben)
    19. herausfinden (to find out) - herausgefunden (haben)
    20. abwaschen (to wash up / wash the dishes) - abgewaschen (haben)
    21. einladen (to invite / to pay for (as a gift)) - eingeladen (haben)
For example, ‘ich lade dich ein’ = I’m inviting you / I’ll get this (in a restaurant / café)
I will continue to update the above list, but it’s certainly some to get going with for now!

I have another question if you could answer, the sentance
PLOTZLICH FANGT FLOSSE AN ZU SCHWIMMEN.
    Why as a sepparable verb
anfangen, an isnt at the end of the sentance
And is zu even necessary here.
I am not a native english speaker , so i appologise for the inconvenience when reading i know it can sometimes be a headache understanding.

Hi! Yes, the ‘zu’ is necessary and it counts as a new clause. The first clause ‘Suddently Flosse starts’ is followed by the second clause ‘to swim’, hence why the separable verb is completed within the first clause. Hope that helps!

    Hi i have a question.
Meine tochter will ein pferd zu weihnachten.
Why do we use zu here and not fur?

    • @HerrFerguson

      Hallo!
Good question. We generally use ‘zu’ for celebrations (E.g. at / for Christmas)
