    OMG!!! I have just changed the knives on my 1034D thanks to you, I cannot thank you enough for such a fantastic video. You are so generous sharing this with us. I haven't got the words to say how happy I am, I haven't been able to use my overlocker for ages because of blunt knives. I followed your instructions step -by -step and it now works beautifully! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Love and best wishes Rachel x

    I feel so empowered by now knowing how to change both blades. Your comment - "don't be afraid" - gave me courage to do it following your excellent instructions. I did it all last night and my 1034D sounds great now!

      That is awesome! Congrats!!! Honestly, the first time I did it I had to psych my self up to do it. I though, "If I take this one screw out and the whole thing falls apart I AM DEAD, id never know how to fix it". Haha I know, so dramatic but hey.... I fix fabric not machines (back then). Glad I could be of some help!

    So I set up my lap top right next to my machine, and watched a step, hit pause and did it, watched a step, then paused and did that step. This really was an easy job only because of your great directions. Thank you so much! My machine is ready to go, oiled up and I am off to sew again!!

    Thanks so much for this video! I don't use my serger as often as you do, but I noticed on my last project, it was having trouble feeding and cutting. I ordered some new blades on-line already, but after watching your video it occurred to me that it might just need a good cleaning. I took it apart and was amazed at the amount of CRUD that was around the mechanisms, probably because my last project was wool flannel - lots of lint off that. Brushed and vacuumed, then oiled the moving parts and Voila! Tested on some broadcloth scraps (which is lined up for the next project) and it works perfectly. Won't hurt to have the extra blades on hand, but I was grateful for your cleaning instruction as well as how to change the blades.

      Hi Carla! Thank you for checking out my channel & commenting! That is fantastic that you were able to trouble shoot your machine and get it running smooth again! Oddly enough a dirty machine is 8/10 times the problem for poor quality stitching. You'd be surprised how some fabrics can cause 10X more the fuzz crud with just one use! And yes, extra blades on deck is always a good thing, I have accidentally ran over hidden pins and messed a knife up where I needed to change the them to continue. Glad I had some in my stash or I'd been upset to wait 2 days to get new ones to finish my project lol. Glad to of been some help! ~ Happy stitching!

    Your video was what I needed. Somehow the stitch finger and a blade is missing. I've searched all thru my sewing stuff and can't imagine what happened. I cleaned it as you did here but I know I didn't remove either piece and noticed them missing as soon as the cleaning began. All screws were placed in a magnetic bowl and replaced and verified per your video.
    Question: If I go to a service provider, is it going to be a painful expense? OUCH!
    I'm saving you for repeat visits as needed. (signed) Going friggen' nuts in Atlanta

    • @SiQ_Clothing

      Hi Alice! Yikes! These two pieces you can purchase online as replacement parts and avoid taking it to a machine Tech. I usually go to sewing parts.com, Type in Brother 1034D parts and the stitching tongue it is about $13 and I get my blades on Amazon they usually run about $8 to $10. Might take a few days but better than a Tech bill.
      I can't say how expensive it is for your Tech as they are all priced differently. If you are too worried to do it yourself you may want to call around to see about pricing. But it is very easy to replace these parts yourself & use my video here will show you how to reinstall them! Hope this helps!

    Anyone that says "Toodles" is my kind of Gal. First time watching, I am looking to buy a used machine, and I know that if you know how to fix one Serger you can pretty much fix them all. I watched four other presentations and you are the one for me. Do you know if a seller says that the machine gets power but the blade doesn't move if there is any value to the machine, that is all they wrote?

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Raffiatoribbons! Thanks for joining the SiQ fam! 😊🙏 I would be cautious about a machine that has a non-moving part because that could get very expensive if the blade does not work. You might want to send them a message and get a little bit more information about the machine before committing! I had a friend that purchased a machine that said the blade did not move and it was because the seller had it disengaged lol. So, take it for what it is but I would get more information before committing. Hope This helps, please let me know if you have any other questions, toodles 😉 !

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I was younger and worked for MGM in the costume department they called a home serger sewing machine a "baby lock". I had brought it up to my Manager and she explained that it was the way they identified the difference of an Industrial & Home machine. As the industrial has higher power and the ability to go through more then a home machine. Just kinda stuck after being there for over 3 years. :)

    • @virginiaomalley
      @virginiaomalley 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see. It's also harder because our Brother serger has the word 'Lock' on the front. I like mine, although it has that little engine revving or roar when I first press the pedal before it actually starts stitching which is a little annoying. Thank you for all your informative videos. They are very helpful.

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lori! I would disengage your cutter sew a test piece an re-engage your cutter. Try again. Is your fabric just not going through the machine or is it going through weird? Without actually having the machine in front of me to see, this could be a number of different things. My Moto is if all else fails, pull the threads out completely, set all my dials back to 0 and restart from scratch. If that does not fix your problem you may want to take your machine to a professional.

    • @loriandres3936

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like you either do not have your cutter engaged or your cutter is faulty. I would highly suggest having a professional look at it if you have tried disengaging & reengaging the cutter.

      Hi Angel! Thank you for subscribing and commenting! I just ordered my blades off Amazon, I think I put the link in the description of that video. You should not need to pay more than $10 for them, they are pretty inexpensive. AND make sure to buy the Amazon Prime ones only. I bought some that were not prime and they showed up 3 months later loose in the envelope with no stickers packaging etc. They were so banged up and damaged when I FINALLY got them haha.

    Love this video! I apparently need to change my blades! I've never changed them and I've had my Brother 1034DX machine for about 4 years! Definitely notice resistance in fabric moving and blades cutting. So glad I came across this. Ordered the blades but my manual for my machine only shows an upper knife, but there is definitely the lower blade right under it. Do I assume this is the correct part I ordered? On another topic, where the needles go into the machine, there is a part missing that the needle rests in so I'm only able to use one needle. It works okay, but there are obviously times when I need the four thread and not just three. I have ordered two different parts but when I try to put them in, they aren't the correct size. Do you have any idea where I can order such a part? I appreciate your help!

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Meg!
      You would be surprised how many times I have heard that about changing the knives lol.
      Sergers all have an upper and lower blade, they should both be changed at the same time. The way I purchase my blades is looking up my serger name & model with "replacement blades".
      The one site I get all my "harder to find parts" is "Sewing Parts Online" & Amazon (sometimes). I am not 100% Sure which needle rest part you are talking about, id need to see a pic to say for Sure but I think you are talking about the needle top stop? I would look at your manual and see if I is listed in the photo grid (for the proper name) and check out SPO or amazon, I get a lot of my replacement parts on either site. If not, you should be able to get the part from your local sewing machine repair guy. Hope this helps. Thanks for your Q's. Happy Stitching!

      @@SiQ_Clothing Thank you so much for your response! Ugh! I should've researched my blades. I have the Brother 1034DX so the one I ordered probably won't fit. The Sewing Parts Online website shows the upper blade as no longer available and lists a lower blade separately. Amazon has one that I went ahead and ordered after reading reviews from customers saying it fits their 1034DX. Hopefully that'll work fine. Wow, what a great video! and there I was, struggling to figure it all out by myself. However...after removing all the plastic coverings over the controls, I have two problems. #1) A plastic pcs. that doesn't fit anywhere AND #2) there's no stitch finger on the serger and I've done a lot of serging recently which is why I was giving it a thorough cleaning. Is it possible to do all that much without that piece?? I can't imagine how, when or where it went, and it's only me and the cat in the house. ( signed) Bewildered in Atl. Guess I need to take a pix of that part....if I knew how. Old picture of OLD Me. 05/29/1935 lol

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh boy.... I would need to see what the plastic piece looks like, that you can't figure out where it goes.
      2. Have you ever pulled your stitching finger out before?
      Yes you can serge without the stitch finger it just changes the overlock from a normal stitch to a very narrow stitch/overlock. So perhaps you took it out before and forgot to put it back on the machine OR accidentally bumped it out of place and it is sitting in the bottom of your door on the inside?
      If you would like to send me a message showing me a pic of the plastic piece so I can help you identify what it is and where it goes, send it to siqclothing@yahoo.com or any of my other social media links like Instagram or Facebook are linked to my Channel. I'll see if I can tell you what the piece is.

    I followed these directions, my thread keeps gathering at the tongue and fork and my fabric won’t move through. Is this user error or do I need to replace these parts?

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had this happen to me before. You want to make sure you are using the regular foot that comes on the machine when you get it. I would take out all of your threads and re-thread the machine from start to finish and see if that fixes this problem. You may need to adjust your stitch length and differential feed knob to accommodate your fabrics. But it does sound like user error not bad parts. See if this fixes it. Best of luck!

    Hi, I'm praying that you have a suggestion to help me....my upper looper rubs slightly on the backside of my lower looper. It was much worse before I removed and reinstalled the upper looper eye. And, is the upper looper supposed to have a bend/curve at the eye? Be blessed and stay safe. 🌟💕

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Maggie! Yes your upper looper and lower looper knitters should cup slightly towards each other creating a slight oval space between them but should not touch at all. If they are, the cause of this could be from getting bent from a fabric & thread jams or perhaps the screw for the upper looper (image 8 on the back wall of the serger) may of vibrated loose. You can take a Phillips screwdriver and try and tighten that piece down and see if that fixes your problem. If you have tried all other troubleshooting (rethreading, cleaning etc.) these pieces may need to be replaced. I'd highly recommend taking it to your machine service guy to get fixed as it sounds like it will only worsen. Hope this helps.

    for the lower knife there's the ledge for the side of the knife, but with the wide hole on the lower knife, how do you set the "height" of the lower knife?
    the upper is a round hole on the blade but the lower blade has a slot so it can be mounted higher or lower...

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great Question! The lower knife has a slightly bigger hole. As a rule of thumb you want that blade to sit flush with the table of the machine. Not lower not higher. If you are unsure you can slide your needle plate back onto to make sure. It may come up about 1/32 higher than the table but anything higher will cause problems. If you are still unsure you can message me in Instagram and I will send you a screen shot of how mine look. ~ Siqgirl Hope this helps.

      Hi Rosie! I had this same issue when I first go this serger. Sometimes you have to pull towards you strongly to get the knife to re-engage. New parts can sometimes stick. If you jiggle your slide lock for the knives and they still won't work you may need to take it to a tech to see if it is something mechanical with the actual machine. Hope this helps! so, I'm sewing a few projects and yes each one are different material... several different problems occurring for each one:
    •my needles keep breaking
    (some break right at the arm holes folds, if this makes sense)
    •my threads at different spots keep breaking
    •I hear a not so good (something is wrong, not right) click when sewing
    •my lever handle to the first side stitching tension clicked a noise when I turned it and now it is not moving to any of the spacings (the handle turns as if it's snapped off on the inside somewhere)
    •sometimes I'm getting the material torn from underneath and the stitching isn't a nice clean look
    •it seems as if the knife cuts some material away all on its own if previously used (so I end up with material getting clipped or some caught under the metal in the stitching of the upper looper piece)
    *question- is the knife lever switch suppose to visibily move the knife up and down or is it somewhere inside the machine that automatically just does the switch when flipped
    thanks for you videos and if any of these can be explained tia

      1. If you are using old thread, it is fragile and will break easier. (yes this is a real thing)
      2. Going around armholes and needles snapping (either your fabric is too thick for the needle or the machine is threaded wrong. (use bigger needle ((On thick pieces I like using a leather needle size 14 or 16, they penetrate all fabrics good and reduce chances of needles breaking)) change your needles.
      3. "Thread breaking" This is typically from not being threaded properly or the tension is too tight.
      4. Clunking, clicking, ticking , etc... noises are NOT normal. And NO levers will move if the machine is working properly.
      I HIGHLY suggest to stop right away and open your front door and clear away any debris that may be hindering ANY moving mechanisms and then double check that your Stitch tongue is in tight. Move the needles up and down by using your hand on the wheel and see if there is any clicking still.
      5. ***This was a HUGE problem I had and as soon as I changed them I was 100% back*** Change your blades!!! Easy but I tell you, when I was younger I didn't know you were supposed to lol. As soon as I changed my blades fabric zipped through my machine easily and I was not fighting fabric or getting the uncut pieces that sneak under the stitching and makes the seam look HORRIBLE! lol
      If I ever encounter machine trouble & can't figure it out in these steps I will pull the thread completely out of the machine. Take my needles out & deep clean my machine top to bottom. Then add NEW needles & re thread & calibrate with a scrap fabric.
      If that doesn't fix my problem I take it to my machine tech! I really hope this helps. Please let me know if you have more trouble. You can also send me a DM on Instagram : SiQ Girl and I can video message you back and try and help you trouble shoot that way too. Sometimes it is hard to really trouble shoot without actually hearing the machine or seeing the stitching! Thanks & Good Luck!

    HOLY COW, BATMAN!! I just checkout the price of the upper and lower knives, yikes!, like $45.99, lets say $46.00 smackeroos.??I've torn this place apart looking for mine. I guess senility has set in because I just know I didn't remove them when I cleaned the serger. Why would I? They had nothing to do with the cleaning process and they sure weren't in the way. Oh, yeah, the stitch finger's missing too! Can you tell I live alone and don't have anyone else to gripe [to]. (never end a sentence with a preposition)

      Hi Alice! Amazon is not out of knives lol. That particular store might be. I just typed in "Brother 1034d serger blades". The first one that came up is by Honeysew and they are $9.28 and can deliver by Nov 5th! I also found the tongue for only $9.80 through the same store Honeysew on Amazon type in "Brother 1034d serger tongue"! They are for our serger and ship quick with Prime! yay! I'd check them out and get back to sewing! lol
      And feel free to gripe anytime, I hide stuff from myself too! Tore apart my shop looking for my fav pair of small scissors (2 month ago) and just found them a few days ago! haha Hope they turn up for you, until then get on Amazon and get a few replacements! I always have at least 2 back ups of my Fav things now haha.

      @@SiQ_Clothing Thanks dear lady, I'm sure everyone thinks I'm so kind of nut case. I'm really not, just going thru a lot of stress right now. Thanks for your patience, I'll get this sorted out pretty soon, along with about ten other about things. Guess we've all experienced how when one bad thing happens other bad things decide to jump in too. I'll get this solved, along with the garage keypad and the other minutia (crap) :( that is making me crazy! I always thought living alone was better than the alternative....now, I'm having some doubts creeping in. Hey!! Somebody slap me back to reality!! Wadda' ya, nuts????? lol. Thanks for all you do, we love you, even that silly giggle.

    How often do you change you blade

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because I am in a very busy costume shop and use my machines daily, I change my blades about every 4 to 6 months. If I use heavier weight fabrics more like canvas, duck cloth & heavy vinyl its 4 months as these fabrics dull the blade faster. If I am using more cotton, satin & spandex its more like 6 months. I typically have back up blades in my storage in case of emergency (accidentally running over needles etc.) Doesn't happen often at all but good to be safe than sorry :)

    Could you repeat these amazon links? It's tedious to type each letter. Just hit return key after you cut n paste so it becomes a link.

      My Bad. I thought these were clickable links. Done & done. Thanks for bringing that to my attention :)

    Okay so I just took mine apart and there is a little piece that just fell out when I took off the cover of all the mechanical parts here. I cannot see where to put it back in.

      What does this piece look like? I have had a piece fall when I have opened mine before and realized it was not even part of the machine, it was a plastic piece of something that fell on my machine and got knocked down the needle holes from something else.

      It’s probably your needle guard that happened to mine recently.

    You can't just sharpen the knives? You have to replace them?

    • @SiQ_Clothing
      @SiQ_Clothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Serger blades should NEVER Be sharpened. The problem with sharpening serger blades is that the upper and lower blades must fit perfectly together so they cannot be sharpened at the sides. Serger blades do not have an angle as knives and scissors do so you've have to decrease the length of the blade in order to remove the damaged material. There are several places that you can get the blades very inexpensively. I purchased my last set on Amazon for $12 for 2 sets! Hope this helps.
