  • The story of the USS Houston, especially the last month of her valiant career, is one of the great epic tales in the history of the United States Navy. Houston, a Northampton class treaty cruiser, became FDR’s home away from home during the mid to late 1930’s, as she embarked him for several cruises and fleet reviews. Then, as the flagship of the outgunned and undermanned US Asiatic Fleet, she fought against tremendous odds during the early days of the Pacific War and made a heroic last stand during the Battle of Sunda Strait, firing until her ammunition was exhausted, and her guns were knocked out. Houston was the epitome of what a fighting ship should be.
Houston earned several nicknames during her career. She is typical referred to as "The Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast" due to her ability to evade the Japanese during the early months of the war and the fact that they reported sinking her several times. She was also referred to by her crew as "The Rambler" due to the extreme range of her travels throughout her career. One could also refer to her as "The Presidential Cruiser", as FDR took 4 cruises aboard her during his presidency (along with several fleet reviews) and expressed a fondness for Houston, as he mentioned to her crew on several occasions.

Treaty cruisers were truly remarkable for surviving as long as they did. Only the advent of the Baltimore heavy and Cleveland light cruisers were all the lessons learned regarding the limitations of the treaty designs and implemented in their designs.

I always look forward to your videos. And you definitely didn't disappoint with this video about the USS Houston!!!
Houston was a beautiful and strong and amazing Cruiser that beat the Japanese and battled her way into the US Navy's history with her daring and ghostly appearance during the early years of WW2...❤🇺🇸🙏
She was indeed a early powerhouse and great American technology.
I'm positive that the City of Houston is very proud of their ship and her duties during WW2!!! ❤❤❤

I met and got to talk with a survivor of the Houston back in the 90's here in Colorado Springs!! What story and of his transfer to Singapore and work as a pow on the railway!! It was very hard to hear him speak of the intense cruelty of the guards, very hard to hear!!!

How can the story of Houston be told without Perth?

I do believe I heard the Perth mentioned many times during the video. This is a video about the Houston not the Perth. Otherwise the video would be titled The Perth.

Again yanks shift the focus to themselves you choose to forget that HMAS Perth fought and died almost to a man

It's ok. You can stop crying. Watch it again and you will hear Perth mentioned many times. Maybe they will make a video about the Perth and you can feel the glee.

'Caliber' on naval guns make no sense to me. You can have a 13" 35 caliber and a 12" 50 caliber. Doesn't compute for me.

      A 12" 50 naval rifle is 12" in diameter and 600 " long 12×50 ÷600
