Thank you so much for the video! My top thread was wrapping around the bobbin only 50% of the time and causing major birdnesting. I found the right corner edge of the bobbin case closest to you was broken off and causing very loose tolerance and the bobbin case was bouncing around all over. I ordered a new bobbin case off of eBay for $7 and just put it in, gapped it to .012” and Voila, problem solved! Yours was the ONLY video I found discussing this so thank you very much, really appreciate it. The machine is in very good condition but was soon to be relegated to the dump heap. No amount of tension adjustment did anything to resolve it. 😊👍

A big thank you for taking the time to video and explain how the bobbin case works and is installed. I do a lot of automotive work, but am getting my wife's sewing machine operational after being in storage for 40 years. I know nothing about sewing machines. I spent half an hour trying to install the bobbin case after removing it without paying attention to how it sat in the rotating hook. I thought it rotated with the rotating hook and mounted firmly and on center and I absolutely could not get it to lock into place (which I now know it does not lock into place or rotate) and ended up breaking the plastic when it jambed under the cover when turning the hand wheel. I needed to know how it functioned and you did an excellent job explaining that.

This is exactly the problem I was having this morning. I bought this machine for $30 on Marketplace and didn't have a manual or even the correct bobbin. The sewing center was going to charge upwards of $225 just to service it. Of course, if I was an expert sewist, I might consider it but I'm just enjoying making quilts for my grandkids and friends. Thank you very much. This actually encourages me to learn more about the mechanics of all my sewing machines.

Sometimes the teeth chip off of it and then the hook won't turn any longer. It is very hard to replace that gear. The gear is only about $10 to #20 but it's a lot of labor to get it out and the new one in. If your hook ever stops rotating that is what to look for. You got a nice bargain, IMO. Happy sewing.

I knew something wasn't quite right when I had to reinsert the Apollo bobbin case and slide the bobbin case holder back into its place. It made the bobbin case so tight that there was no movement at all. So what I did was just not slide the bobbin case all the way in as a walk around solution. However, I found out later, it caused "nesting" or knotting sometimes whenever I started putting the seams together. I finally found this video although it didn't exactly say it was for a Singer 513, but it did use an Apollo bobbin case. After watching the latter part of your instructional video, I realized that in my machine, there was barely a thread gap. I checked the threading after watching your video, I made the adjustment as suggested and was now able to lock in the bobbin case completely. It corrected the problem! None of the instruction books ever say when you replace the bobbin case, you might have to make a thread adjustment. Thanks so much.

Thank you for the information. My Singer is a 4562 and I didn’t know what to do because of the way the bobbin was acting. I had it professionally fixed in August for a bobbin issue and today, 1-6-22 , it started the same thing. I think from your video I have a better idea what to adjust. This is a really helpful video. My machine’s hook was pulling the top thread under the Apollo case instead of over it. Turned out the thread gap was too wide so the case was loose enough to lift up out of the race just enough to pull the hook thread to the underside. I fixed the gap as you showed, and that righted in the bobbin case to run true instead of rattling about! God bless you!

Great detail, thanks for that. Do you have a video dealing with a stuck up presser foot. My singer 2210 in the closet for years stays up when lever is down. I can force it to drop manually but very stiff. Clean and lube no help. I want to disassemble but can't find anything on TH-cam demo how to remove parts in way of it. Model 2210 was made in Monza, Italy circa 1987. It's too new of a machine for me. I've never even seen one. Very good video, Andy. I personally detest the apollo bobbin case. I've had them too loose (and yes, they pop out!) and I've had them too tight. I don't have one of those gauges to measure the gap, so had to adjust by trial and error. But what I REALLY don't like about the apollo is that the thread tends to slip out of the tension spring. I've bought them from different sources trying to find a better quality case but I think it's just the way they are designed. I suppose this was a cost saving measure along with nylon gears replacing metal gears, but it is certainly NOT an improvement!
Thank you. I don't care for the Apollo system either. I will say I've found the vintage bobbin cases to work better than a new one. I replaced a working case b/c it had a couple needle strikes and scratches. The new one kept failing to hold the bobbin thread during ZZ sewing. I also tried a different seller/brand. No luck. I put the old bobbin case back in and no more problems. The new just don't seem up to spec. BTW, common copy paper is .004" thick and 3 strips of it equals .012" which is the middle range for the gap. It is what I used before buying a gauge. Thanks for watching my channel.
Greetings! Sorry to hear about your hook. I had trouble finding any information on your model 2405, so I do not think it was sold here in the USA. A friend sent me some very old pictures of one and it looks a lot like the model 242, 247, etc. that were sold here where I live. The estimated decade of manufacture for your model tells me ( I have to make an educated guess here) that your machine has a vertical shaft from top to bottom with a gear on top and a pulley for the timing belt on the bottom. If it is like the other Singer machines from that time frame it may have a cracked/broken gear on the top of that vertical shaft. When that happens no power is transferred down to the bottom pulley so the timing belt does not turn. The other side of that belt is around a pulley on the hook shaft, so if the belt does not turn then, of course, the hook does not turn. If you are lucky you will find that the timing belt just has stretched and slipped off the pulley, but honestly, in about 95% of the cases (in my experience), we find that top gear destroyed. It is possible to replace the gear and I made a video about how to do it b/c I was getting about 5 or 6 emails per month about the hook not moving on these styles of machines. My video is using model 457 as an example, but the mechanics on most of these models are the same. Maybe you can glance thru my gear change video (it's long) and see if the gear and pulley system is like what you see when you remove the top and bottom covers on your machine. You do not have an access port behind the removable cover plate. On machines like yours (what I believe from the one picture I got) is you would have to remove the Dial on the Upright to see inside and hopefully access the gear/shaft that way. Here is a video of the only model I have done that had a dial for stitch length. This video shows how I was able to remove the dial. I know your machine is probably different but it may help to see how this particular dial came off. I usually have access to the instruction and parts manuals for most Singer Machines, but some were made overseas in Taiwan, South America, Germany and so forth and they were never sold here in the USA, so no records on file here. I hope this reply can help you a little bit and give you some ideas about what could be wrong and what to look for. Best of luck and thanks for watching my channel.

Hello My Genie gets erratic stitches. When zigzagging on the two wide zigzag makes combinations of blind stitching straight and zz 🥺 I verified the piece that goes on the disk but it looked fine. Although I noticed it is missing the big spring that crosses over the White plastic part What can it be? Please, help. Blessings to you!
You've mentioned a couple of missing parts so far. When parts of the machine are broken or missing we can't expect the machine to work normally at all times. Parts can often be found on eBay, and BTW, most of the parts on models 353 & 354 are the same. There are many causes of skipped stitches, including wrong needle, needle inserted wrong, bent needle, wrong threading of needle, wrong needle thread tension (much lower tension setting should be used on ZZ, especially the wider ZZ stitches), needle bar at wrong height, needle bar to hook timing was lost. There is also a plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft of this machine. Those gears are known to crack, loose teeth, and crumble with age. Your machine is 46 years old an someone may have already replaced that gear, but maybe not. That gear turns the shaft that goes to the bottom of the machine to make the hook go around and if it is damaged you start to get erratic stitching. Hi Andy, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge about these machines. I just bought a Scarlet 354 and I am having issues to use it. I have heaps of thread under my fabric and it get stuck at some point. I though it was a tension problem so I took it apart but it seems fine. I then tought it was a problem with the thread gap, but that's fine too and I just realised that the top thread get caught on the bobine and loops around the bobine. I can't figure out the problem. Do you have any ideas please? Cheers
Some ideas, yes. When thread catches on the bobbin itself and wraps around it we check to make sure you are using a Singer type class 66 bobbin and the Apollo bobbin case like it the video. We also remove the whole bobbin case and clean under and all around it to be sure there is no gunk or compacted lint. We inspect the bobbin case and look for damage. The bobbin case is plastic and if it has had needle strikes or scratches they can snag the needle thread as it passes over the top of the bobbin and the thread can get stuck. We inspect the rotary hook itself to be sure it is rotating normally. If it is NOT rotating or is rotates sporadically that is the sign of a much more serious problem. Be sure it rotates counterclockwise is a smooth fashion. If it does then look for a burr on the hook, especially near or on the hook point. A burr can also snag the thread and delay or prevent the thread from being released and then the next thread and the next and you have a big pile of thread stacking up. One more thing to check it the tension/cleanliness of the bobbin case tension spring. That is a flattish metal spring built into the plastic case that you slip the bobbin thread behind. The idea is that tension spring puts some tension on the bobbin thread and the tension assembly puts some tension on the needle thread and you adjust the tension on the needle thread to "balance" the tension on the two threads to get a nice even stitch that crosses between fabric layers. Let's say your bobbin case tension is crazy high b/c the tiny screw is real tight or there is a bunch of mucky lint and gunk stuck under the bobbin case tension spring b/c the machine is 45 Y.O. and no one ever cleaned it. That might make the bobbin thread so tight that the take-up lever can't pull the two threads up and together so the needle thread gets pulled down under that fabric and loops and bird nests and gets tangled and hung-up. The opposite could be true that the bobbin tension is in the normal range but the needle thread tension is super low or non-existent because the tension assembly needs cleaning/adjusting or you miss-threaded it (operator error 👀😉) Many sewist tell me when they have a tangled thread they pull the thread all the way out and re-thread the needle from the thread spool to the eye of the needle to be sure they did not mess-up. So those are some things we check for, and there are more, like a bent needle, broken part on the tension assembly. etc. but you have to start somewhere. SInce this machine is new to you pull out the thread and re-run it, then check the other stuff one thing at a time. I can't say, David. I've never seen any of the German Slant Needle models in person. I can't get parts manuals for them to get a part number or see the original case. The cases ride on a narrow metal shelf inside the hook and I don't know if the Apollo case would "ride" at the same height, etc. Also, other machines I did, like the 353, have different Bobbin Case positioning brackets than the 401s do. After WWII Japan started making many items. One of the early best selling items was a clone of the ZIPPO lighter. It was stamped on the bottom "MADE IN USA" and it was very low priced. There is a history with this and other Singer Models of that decade where the top gear on the vertical shaft (plastic) cracks, breaks or disintegrates. That shaft takes movent to the bottom of the machine for the feed dog and hook systems. If your hook is not rotating around the bobbin case then there is a good chance the gear is gone. It could be a loose pulley or belt on the bottom, but I've found it's usually that gear. @Nima Mina OK, great! I was thinking of all those parts you will be dealing with and remembered that I have a parts list from years ago. It has "exploded" drawings of the parts from each segment of the machine. The parts are all numbered and there is a list by part number telling the name of that part. It is possible but easy to check. You can measure the gap without adjusting anything. If it falls between the numbers mentioned it most likely is not the cause of skipped stitches. When the gap is too narrow it can snag the thread for a partial second and the hook misses grabbing the thread. There sure are many issues that cause skipping, with timing being the most time-consuming to correct. They say timing is everything and for a sewing machine that is true. The needle bar height and the needlepoint to hook point settings must be nearly dead-on accurate to avoid skips. I have had to readjust my timing settings a few times to get it right. So you may want to just review your settings and you can do that without using tools again. Otherwise, there are many reasons for skipping and I can name a few for you here if you want to continue. IMPROPER THREADING. Very common so be sure you follow the thread path from spool to needle meticulously. You can download a free copy of the Instruction Manual from the Singer Support Page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=353 THE NEEDLE NEEDS REPLACING. 2nd thing I do is replace the needle; with a new, never used one if I have it. The needle is the cheapest cost of any sewing project. THE NEEDLE IS NOT SEATED CORRECTLY. Be sure the flat side is to the back and the needle is pushed up into the clamp. THREAD TENSION IS TOO HIGH. The best tension is a low one. Higher tension can pull the thread before the hook can grab it. Tension is easy to play with and just costs a few feet of thread. WRONG TYPE OF NEEDLE FOR THE MATERIAL. An example is using a regular, sharp point needle on knit fabric. The point can catch on the fabric minutely bending the needle and moving the thread loop away from the hook causing a skip. NEEDLE SIZE AND THREAD WEIGHT ARE MISMATCHED. Thick thread thru a small needle eye causes drag (increased tension) on the thread and causes skips. YOUR MACHINE IS "FLAGGING" Say what? This is when you don't have enough pressure on the fabric or the feed dog teeth are worn. That can cause the fabric to hesitate on its way under the needle. THE MACHINE DOES NOT NEED YOUR HELP PUSHING THE FABRIC UNDER THE NEEDLE!!!! You can carefully guide the fabric if needed, but when we try to "help" the fabric along we weigh down with our fingertips and momentarily slow the fabric down. This is very common, especially with new sewists. Let the feed dog do its thing like when you walk a dog it really walks itself; you don't push or drag it along (hopefully). YES, THE PROPER NEEDLE BAR HEIGHT AND HOOK POINT TIMING ARE NEEDED, AS ALREADY MENTIONED. Thank for watching my channel and good luck.

The problem is you cant find the shuttle hooks anywhere. I cannot find a shuttle hook for a singer 7184 or a compatable one anywhere. This one you got here looks like all the same parts.
It is rare to have to replace the rotary hook but if you really need to it is part number 353104 and fits a number of Singer models. thank you. Can you help me understand your question? What is "the hook of the wheel"?? The "hook" is the circle of metal that rotates counterclockwise around the bobbin and bobbin case. The "hook point" catches the needle thread from behind the needle and as it rotates towards about the 6 O'clock position it lets the thread "slip off" or "cast off" from the hook point to allow the takeup lever to pull the slack of the thread up out of the fabric. Unless you mean the little silver lever that slides over the top left edge of the bobbin case to keep it in place, I can't picture any hook over the case. I see you have posted videos in the past so if you make a short one showing us what the hook looks like I'd say nothing should be over the bobbin case on a Singer Model 353/354.

Got it. Sorry to say you have a broken plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft. That V. Shaft powers the timing belt on the bottom that turns the hook. You can replace the gear but it's about a 25-step process. You can buy the Service Manual for instructions. Oh? I've been using Paypal since they started. I feel it is the safest way to shop online b/c you do not give the seller your credit card or bank info. Paypal guarantees the payment to the seller and sends them the money. The only one who has your CC or Bank Info is Paypal on there secure servers. Thank you so much for the video! My top thread was wrapping around the bobbin only 50% of the time and causing major birdnesting. I found the right corner edge of the bobbin case closest to you was broken off and causing very loose tolerance and the bobbin case was bouncing around all over. I ordered a new bobbin case off of eBay for $7 and just put it in, gapped it to .012” and Voila, problem solved! Yours was the ONLY video I found discussing this so thank you very much, really appreciate it. The machine is in very good condition but was soon to be relegated to the dump heap. No amount of tension adjustment did anything to resolve it. 😊👍

A big thank you for taking the time to video and explain how the bobbin case works and is installed. I do a lot of automotive work, but am getting my wife's sewing machine operational after being in storage for 40 years. I know nothing about sewing machines. I spent half an hour trying to install the bobbin case after removing it without paying attention to how it sat in the rotating hook. I thought it rotated with the rotating hook and mounted firmly and on center and I absolutely could not get it to lock into place (which I now know it does not lock into place or rotate) and ended up breaking the plastic when it jambed under the cover when turning the hand wheel. I needed to know how it functioned and you did an excellent job explaining that.

This is exactly the problem I was having this morning. I bought this machine for $30 on Marketplace and didn't have a manual or even the correct bobbin. The sewing center was going to charge upwards of $225 just to service it. Of course, if I was an expert sewist, I might consider it but I'm just enjoying making quilts for my grandkids and friends. Thank you very much. This actually encourages me to learn more about the mechanics of all my sewing machines.

Sometimes the teeth chip off of it and then the hook won't turn any longer. It is very hard to replace that gear. The gear is only about $10 to #20 but it's a lot of labor to get it out and the new one in. If your hook ever stops rotating that is what to look for. You got a nice bargain, IMO. Happy sewing.

I knew something wasn't quite right when I had to reinsert the Apollo bobbin case and slide the bobbin case holder back into its place. It made the bobbin case so tight that there was no movement at all. So what I did was just not slide the bobbin case all the way in as a walk around solution. However, I found out later, it caused "nesting" or knotting sometimes whenever I started putting the seams together.
I finally found this video although it didn't exactly say it was for a Singer 513, but it did use an Apollo bobbin case. After watching the latter part of your instructional video, I realized that in my machine, there was barely a thread gap. I checked the threading after watching your video, I made the adjustment as suggested and was now able to lock in the bobbin case completely. It corrected the problem! None of the instruction books ever say when you replace the bobbin case, you might have to make a thread adjustment. Thanks so much.

This is a really helpful video. My machine’s hook was pulling the top thread under the Apollo case instead of over it. Turned out the thread gap was too wide so the case was loose enough to lift up out of the race just enough to pull the hook thread to the underside. I fixed the gap as you showed, and that righted in the bobbin case to run true instead of rattling about! God bless you!

I can force it to drop manually but very stiff. Clean and lube no help. I want to disassemble but can't find anything on TH-cam demo how to remove parts in way of it. Model 2210 was made in Monza, Italy circa 1987. It's too new of a machine for me. I've never even seen one. Would you happen to have the Instruction Manual to check your settings? Viewers have told me some machines have a setting to raise the presser bar for monogramming or free hand sewing.
Very good video, Andy. I personally detest the apollo bobbin case. I've had them too loose (and yes, they pop out!) and I've had them too tight. I don't have one of those gauges to measure the gap, so had to adjust by trial and error. But what I REALLY don't like about the apollo is that the thread tends to slip out of the tension spring. I've bought them from different sources trying to find a better quality case but I think it's just the way they are designed. I suppose this was a cost saving measure along with nylon gears replacing metal gears, but it is certainly NOT an improvement!
Thank you. I don't care for the Apollo system either. I will say I've found the vintage bobbin cases to work better than a new one. I replaced a working case b/c it had a couple needle strikes and scratches. The new one kept failing to hold the bobbin thread during ZZ sewing. I also tried a different seller/brand. No luck. I put the old bobbin case back in and no more problems. The new just don't seem up to spec. BTW, common copy paper is .004" thick and 3 strips of it equals .012" which is the middle range for the gap. It is what I used before buying a gauge. Thanks for watching my channel.

Greetings! Sorry to hear about your hook. I had trouble finding any information on your model 2405, so I do not think it was sold here in the USA. A friend sent me some very old pictures of one and it looks a lot like the model 242, 247, etc. that were sold here where I live.
The estimated decade of manufacture for your model tells me ( I have to make an educated guess here) that your machine has a vertical shaft from top to bottom with a gear on top and a pulley for the timing belt on the bottom. If it is like the other Singer machines from that time frame it may have a cracked/broken gear on the top of that vertical shaft. When that happens no power is transferred down to the bottom pulley so the timing belt does not turn. The other side of that belt is around a pulley on the hook shaft, so if the belt does not turn then, of course, the hook does not turn. If you are lucky you will find that the timing belt just has stretched and slipped off the pulley, but honestly, in about 95% of the cases (in my experience), we find that top gear destroyed. It is possible to replace the gear and I made a video about how to do it b/c I was getting about 5 or 6 emails per month about the hook not moving on these styles of machines. My video is using model 457 as an example, but the mechanics on most of these models are the same. Maybe you can glance thru my gear change video (it's long) and see if the gear and pulley system is like what you see when you remove the top and bottom covers on your machine. Here is the video: th-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/w-d-xo.html If this does turn out to be your problem you will notice that the 457 looks different on the outside than your machine. You do not have an access port behind the removable cover plate. On machines like yours (what I believe from the one picture I got) is you would have to remove the Dial on the Upright to see inside and hopefully access the gear/shaft that way. Here is a video of the only model I have done that had a dial for stitch length. This video shows how I was able to remove the dial. I know your machine is probably different but it may help to see how this particular dial came off. I usually have access to the instruction and parts manuals for most Singer Machines, but some were made overseas in Taiwan, South America, Germany and so forth and they were never sold here in the USA, so no records on file here. I hope this reply can help you a little bit and give you some ideas about what could be wrong and what to look for. Best of luck and thanks for watching my channel.

My Genie gets erratic stitches. When zigzagging on the two wide zigzag makes combinations of blind stitching straight and zz 🥺
I verified the piece that goes on the disk but it looked fine. Although I noticed it is missing the big spring that crosses over the White plastic part

You've mentioned a couple of missing parts so far. When parts of the machine are broken or missing we can't expect the machine to work normally at all times. Parts can often be found on eBay, and BTW, most of the parts on models 353 & 354 are the same.
There are many causes of skipped stitches, including wrong needle, needle inserted wrong, bent needle, wrong threading of needle, wrong needle thread tension (much lower tension setting should be used on ZZ, especially the wider ZZ stitches), needle bar at wrong height, needle bar to hook timing was lost.
There is also a plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft of this machine. Those gears are known to crack, loose teeth, and crumble with age. Your machine is 46 years old an someone may have already replaced that gear, but maybe not. That gear turns the shaft that goes to the bottom of the machine to make the hook go around and if it is damaged you start to get erratic stitching. Hi Andy, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge about these machines. I just bought a Scarlet 354 and I am having issues to use it. I have heaps of thread under my fabric and it get stuck at some point. I though it was a tension problem so I took it apart but it seems fine. I then tought it was a problem with the thread gap, but that's fine too and I just realised that the top thread get caught on the bobine and loops around the bobine. I can't figure out the problem. Do you have any ideas please? Cheers
Some ideas, yes. When thread catches on the bobbin itself and wraps around it we check to make sure you are using a Singer type class 66 bobbin and the Apollo bobbin case like it the video. We also remove the whole bobbin case and clean under and all around it to be sure there is no gunk or compacted lint. We inspect the bobbin case and look for damage. The bobbin case is plastic and if it has had needle strikes or scratches they can snag the needle thread as it passes over the top of the bobbin and the thread can get stuck. We inspect the rotary hook itself to be sure it is rotating normally. If it is NOT rotating or is rotates sporadically that is the sign of a much more serious problem. Be sure it rotates counterclockwise is a smooth fashion. If it does then look for a burr on the hook, especially near or on the hook point. A burr can also snag the thread and delay or prevent the thread from being released and then the next thread and the next and you have a big pile of thread stacking up. One more thing to check it the tension/cleanliness of the bobbin case tension spring. That is a flattish metal spring built into the plastic case that you slip the bobbin thread behind. The idea is that tension spring puts some tension on the bobbin thread and the tension assembly puts some tension on the needle thread and you adjust the tension on the needle thread to "balance" the tension on the two threads to get a nice even stitch that crosses between fabric layers. Let's say your bobbin case tension is crazy high b/c the tiny screw is real tight or there is a bunch of mucky lint and gunk stuck under the bobbin case tension spring b/c the machine is 45 Y.O. and no one ever cleaned it.
That might make the bobbin thread so tight that the take-up lever can't pull the two threads up and together so the needle thread gets pulled down under that fabric and loops and bird nests and gets tangled and hung-up. The opposite could be true that the bobbin tension is in the normal range but the needle thread tension is super low or non-existent because the tension assembly needs cleaning/adjusting or you miss-threaded it (operator error 👀😉) Many sewist tell me when they have a tangled thread they pull the thread all the way out and re-thread the needle from the thread spool to the eye of the needle to be sure they did not mess-up. So those are some things we check for, and there are more, like a bent needle, broken part on the tension assembly. etc. but you have to start somewhere. SInce this machine is new to you pull out the thread and re-run it, then check the other stuff one thing at a time. I can't say, David. I've never seen any of the German Slant Needle models in person. I can't get parts manuals for them to get a part number or see the original case. The cases ride on a narrow metal shelf inside the hook and I don't know if the Apollo case would "ride" at the same height, etc. Also, other machines I did, like the 353, have different Bobbin Case positioning brackets than the 401s do. There is a history with this and other Singer Models of that decade where the top gear on the vertical shaft (plastic) cracks, breaks or disintegrates. That shaft takes movent to the bottom of the machine for the feed dog and hook systems. If your hook is not rotating around the bobbin case then there is a good chance the gear is gone. It could be a loose pulley or belt on the bottom, but I've found it's usually that gear.

It has "exploded" drawings of the parts from each segment of the machine. The parts are all numbered and there is a list by part number telling the name of that part. So informative, would the gap misalignment be a reason that my machine skips stitches? I’ve already done the timing and followed your video on that.
It is possible but easy to check. You can measure the gap without adjusting anything. If it falls between the numbers mentioned it most likely is not the cause of skipped stitches. When the gap is too narrow it can snag the thread for a partial second and the hook misses grabbing the thread.
There sure are many issues that cause skipping, with timing being the most time-consuming to correct. They say timing is everything and for a sewing machine that is true. The needle bar height and the needlepoint to hook point settings must be nearly dead-on accurate to avoid skips. I have had to readjust my timing settings a few times to get it right. So you may want to just review your settings and you can do that without using tools again.
Otherwise, there are many reasons for skipping and I can name a few for you here if you want to continue.
IMPROPER THREADING. Very common so be sure you follow the thread path from spool to needle meticulously.

THE NEEDLE NEEDS REPLACING. 2nd thing I do is replace the needle; with a new, never used one if I have it. The needle is the
cheapest cost of any sewing project.
THE NEEDLE IS NOT SEATED CORRECTLY. Be sure the flat side is to the back and the needle is pushed up into the clamp.
THREAD TENSION IS TOO HIGH. The best tension is a low one. Higher tension can pull the thread before the hook can grab it.
Tension is easy to play with and just costs a few feet of thread.
WRONG TYPE OF NEEDLE FOR THE MATERIAL. An example is using a regular, sharp point needle on knit fabric. The point can catch
on the fabric minutely bending the needle and moving the thread loop away from the hook causing a skip.
NEEDLE SIZE AND THREAD WEIGHT ARE MISMATCHED. Thick thread thru a small needle eye causes drag (increased tension) on the
thread and causes skips.
YOUR MACHINE IS "FLAGGING" Say what? This is when you don't have enough pressure on the fabric or the feed dog teeth are worn.
That can cause the fabric to hesitate on its way under the needle.
THE MACHINE DOES NOT NEED YOUR HELP PUSHING THE FABRIC UNDER THE NEEDLE!!!! You can carefully guide the fabric if
needed, but when we try to "help" the fabric along we weigh down with our fingertips and momentarily slow the fabric down. This
is very common, especially with new sewists. Let the feed dog do its thing like when you walk a dog it really walks itself; you don't
push or drag it along (hopefully).
YES, THE PROPER NEEDLE BAR HEIGHT AND HOOK POINT TIMING ARE NEEDED, AS ALREADY MENTIONED.

@@andytubesewing1953 thanks for your time and input here. I have a feeling the feed dogs need replacing. I did manage to get it timed correctly. And it does catch but now the needle bar (lower) bracket assembly has play... And a lot of it. One problem solved and a new one develops, hahahaha.
@@martiabr2 Always something, right? The Needle bar bearings, both upper and lower, can be adjusted, as well as the vibrating bracket. I can recommend a couple of inexpensive service manuals that you can download if you want. The problem is you cant find the shuttle hooks anywhere. I cannot find a shuttle hook for a singer 7184 or a compatable one anywhere. This one you got here looks like all the same parts.
It is rare to have to replace the rotary hook but if you really need to it is part number 353104 and fits a number of Singer models. Model 4423 is about 1/2 century newer than the model in this video. A different system. I've never even seen a 4423 in person. I do have access to the 30-page Service Manual for the machine. thank you. Can you help me understand your question? What is "the hook of the wheel"?? The "hook" is the circle of metal that rotates counterclockwise around the bobbin and bobbin case. The "hook point" catches the needle thread from behind the needle and as it rotates towards about the 6 O'clock position it lets the thread "slip off" or "cast off" from the hook point to allow the takeup lever to pull the slack of the thread up out of the fabric. That is a normal operation. If the thread "slips off the hook" somewhere else could you tell me where? By an hour of the clock position? Thank you.

There's a hook over my bobbin case. It seems to stop the thread . Do you really need it. In your videos it is not there
Unless you mean the little silver lever that slides over the top left edge of the bobbin case to keep it in place, I can't picture any hook over the case. I see you have posted videos in the past so if you make a short one showing us what the hook looks like I'd say nothing should be over the bobbin case on a Singer Model 353/354.

Machine hook not turning only the feed dog and the needle model on the machine
Got it. Sorry to say you have a broken plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft. That V. Shaft powers the timing belt on the bottom that turns the hook. You can replace the gear but it's about a 25-step process. You can buy the Service Manual for instructions. It's $9 from this seller: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-353-354-genie-sewing-machine-service-manual/ A few viewers have told me they found shortcuts to replacing the gear, and this TH-cam member has a slideshow explaining how her did it. It has 2K+ views showing the gear is a common problem.

Oh? I've been using Paypal since they started. I feel it is the safest way to shop online b/c you do not give the seller your credit card or bank info. Paypal guarantees the payment to the seller and sends them the money. The only one who has your CC or Bank Info is Paypal on there secure servers. Anything can happen I suppose, but it has worked well for me all these years. I have made hundreds of purchases and payment using Paypal without a problem. How else could you pay for a new bobbin case? I can't imagine any brick and mortar store selling one.
