  • Ofra Haza's "Yemenite Songs ( שירי תימן‎)" was released in 1984 by Globe Style Records (UK), with the album focusing on the Israeli pop star's interpretation of traditional Yemenite Jewish music. The lyrics of the Yemenite songs of the Diwan draw from the devotional poetry of 16th century Rabbi Shalom Shabazi and are sung in Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic.

Also, I'm a percussionist and still want one of those big olive oil tins that Yemenite Jewish folks play.
Also, there are b&w videos of her performing a lot of these songs with an Israeli theater troupe at the very beginning of her career. They're some of my favorite uploads of her here on YT.

The lyrics come from poems by Rabbi Shalom Shabazi and are part of the poetry collection known as the Yemenite Jewish Diwan. If you look up R. Shahbazi and the YJD, you should be able to find information in English. My copies of this recording have summaries of each poem in English.

I'm from Russia. I learned Arabic during my university studies and spent several years of my life in Middle East including Egypt and Yemen. I remember she was extremely popular both in Egypt and Yemen. Yemenites were very proud of her singing Yemenite songs and Egyptians liked her more than other Arabic singing singers of Israel. Since Egypt is most important center of Arab civilisation this high evaluation of her singing means she was really great singer of ME.

I came back from Jordan recently. When I went to the Israeli-Palestinian and Jordanian border, I thought of the first song "Im Nin'alu" for whatever reason. I speak Arabic so I understand the songs in Arabic, but sadly no understanding of the Hebrew. I only know the first song is religious and I absolutely love it. I am a singer myself and when I sing in Arabic, I try so hard to sing like her....I wish she were still here.

I got an original Hed Arzi Records CD recording of this album from a mail order catalogue importer in NYC metro area sometime in the early 1990s. If you bought Judaica from this "store", you'd wait for weeks because the fellow running the store would pick them up while in Israel, then mail them to you! Clearly a different time.

I grew up seeing this picture of a Yeminite bride, everything was made of gold. Not everyone could afford this dress, so it was lent out to those who were poor.
They were our neighbors when I was a kid, for years Their culture dates generations, because of their remote geographical location, they had a different cultural heritage from the Spanish Sefardic origins, or Ashkenazi Jews of Europe. This is reflected in songs, Israeli folk dances, synagogue and home prayers, cuisine, and family traditions of life cycle events. I think they were considered as Edot hamisrach, many were brought to Israel on operation Magic carpet around 1956.

@@angeloluberto5440 You are referring to the history of Sephardic
Jewry. The Yemenites are not Sephardic, and have a seperate history from Mizrahi Jews as well. The are among the oldest communities in the diaspora.
The Jewish communities in the UK and Ireland are mainly Ashkenazi, incidentally. Not saying there aren't Sephardic Jews there, but they are mainly from Eastern Europe.

@@davidflinn4521 I suppose it depends on which tradition one chooses to follow or believe in. To Rastafarians and according to the Kebra Nagast, that is correct. But to others, the Queen is Yemeni while to others the Queen is Hebrew in origin. To others, Sheba came from Zimbabwe or Monomatapa. In context, I don't think it really matters. To the olden day peoples, Ethiopia was the name of the whole of Africa, the Near East and parts of India. No one was racist and no one really cared what particular shade of complexion a Queen was.

Ofra’s a Jewish princesesin. Her song Jerusalem of Gold carried soldiers through the six day war. Hashem used the voice of the marginalised Mizrahi not the Ashkenazi; the nature of Hashem.
