If you want to explore the problems that scientific progress might bring to human society further, I recommend studying Carl Jung’s ideas on human psychology. He argued that the overemphasis on rationality and scientific materialism alienated individuals from their inner lives, spiritual needs, and connection to the unconscious. He viewed this imbalance as a source of psychological and societal problems, including the rise of totalitarianism.
The so-called lack of initiation rituals.

I’d like to share my thoughts on this:
Technological and scientific progress has given us more free time-or time to dedicate to various activities, such as deep thinking-by reducing the effort needed for basic survival. Rousseau would never have been able to develop his ideas and write his books without that same free time. This free time has undoubtedly created opportunities for creativity, innovation, and leisure. Without progress, many of humanity’s greatest achievements-like science, art, literature, and technology-might never have been possible.
Humans naturally seek leisure; it’s not just a modern phenomenon. Entertainment has always been part of human life, whether through storytelling, socializing, going to the pub, or, in modern times, using social media. It’s not inherently bad, but how we use our free time shapes our personal growth and contributions to society.
In the end, discipline plays a crucial role in determining whether someone uses their free time productively or gives in to distraction. If Rousseau was able to produce his ideas and books, it was because he didn’t waste his free time; he was disciplined. The question is: will we be able to teach discipline to future generations as time advances? I’m not sure. I don’t even know whether discipline is a genetic trait, a personality trait, a socio-psychological one, or perhaps all three.

Thanks for the input! I agree that Rousseau would never have been able to develop his ideas without free time, which is in part a consequence of technological progress. As I understand it though, ideally he would never have had the need to develop his ideas, since it is the same technological progress and its consequences that made society "sick" in the first place.
I like your thoughts on discipline. Rousseau must have been disciplined to create what he did. I believe that nowadays it is a lot harder to be disciplined, since we have constant access to distractions that are engineered to trigger our dopamine systems. Therefore, I think that it is definitely going to be harder for future generations to become disciplined and I wonder how this is going to affect the expression and implementation of revolutionary ideas🤔
