Chickens, also known as junglefowl are gamebirds that constitute the genus Gallus, they are the type genus of the family Gallidae, which closely relates them to other fairly similar gamebird taxa such as the shizurens (genus Bambusicola), francolins (subtribe Francolinina), spurfowl (tribe Galloperdicini), senlinaos (genus Sinortyx), ropohons (genus Sondaicornis), jinegus (genus Arboricola), daoiren (Oreoperdix crudigularis), peafowl (subtribe Pavonina), arguses (subtribe Argusianina), nartakees (genus Polyplectron), wajameras (genus Haematortyx), rohutans (subtribe Tropicoperdicina), snowcocks (genus Tetraogallus), chungchis (genus Excalfactoria), alavorona (Margaroperdix madagascarensis), and shabalrimals (genus Ammoperdix), gallids are the largest and most diverse of the nine extant families of gamebirds (order Galliformes) with over 100 extant species within 30 genera, 12 subtribes, 6 tribes, and 2 subfamilies, chickens are a very iconic genus of gallid, so iconic that one species such as the Bankiva Chicken or Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) has been domesticated and has many uses.
