      Love when NPCs realize just how terrifyingly unyielding the WoL is. The only way to beat them is to avoid them. You can't defeat them, you can't break them, you can't deter them. They WILL set their sights on you. They WILL find you. They WILL smash your plans to pieces. It's like a mountain walking, you can just stand in awe, powerless to stop it.

      I started playing this game on a whim from a friend when he saw that warframe just wasn’t doing it for me anymore
      ARR was a bit rocky but everything else has given me more joy and tears both than I’ve ever imagined a video game could
      ShB and EW helped me confront some of the worst moments in my life to this point and push past them, telling myself “I am enough, this is my life to live” and it’s been an amazing past couple years now

      It would've been so easy for them to end up in a trite "Just don't be sad!" or "Suffering is good, actually". But by taking their time telling this story through years and years and years, the XIV team managed to communicate a _very_ nuanced point in a very emotional way. It's _amazing._

      @drachepumpernickel7056 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@JaythebardTV it's probably the most powerful and IMPORTANT cutscene in the entire game. It lays out the philosophy of the entire game. Life is filled with suffering and we don't have a purpose for living given to us. However, that isn't a bad thing, suffering means the joy we find is that much more important.we arent given a purpose? So that means we have the freedom to make and find our own, something to strive for even if we ourselves would never see it. It's HOPE, incarnate. It's nihilism, but instead of focusing on the negatives of the philosophy, it's the other side of the coin, it's taking our fate into our own hands, it's liberating in a way.
      Zenos and Venat are the embodiments of this duality. It's the same philosophy, but taken in completely opposite directions from the starting point.
      Sorry for the wordy reply but I had to say it since this is one of, if not my favorite scene in all of gaming and speaks to me at my very core.

    Man, that cutscene hits hard...
    Some minor notes on the 'walk' Venta performed. The blows she suffered represent the Rejoinings. With each one, she was brutalized and deeply wounded. The black 'ooze' on her? Originally was supposed to be blood, but FFXIV would of seen a rating hike from the ESRB and the EU so they made it black sludge. Personally, I think it looks better and is more thematic.

    One cool detail about Venat that’s exclusive to the short stories is that she, in her younger days as a scholar, worked on a theory that posited life as an inevitability given certain resources. Proving this theory was a major factor as to what got her the seat of Azem, and was a part of her perspective. (the story is also from the perspective of the ancient who would become the base for her creating The Watcher!)
    Just think about that as part of her driving force. She knew life would ALWAYS be possible and that all the life she saw was worth it. That’s why sacrificing “lesser” life was never an option. Hydaelyn was a physical embodiment of that.

    I fought death itself to be here for Endwalker's launch. Woke up in a hospital weaker than the proverbial newborn kitten. Had to rebuild my ability to sit up, feed myself, stand, walk. Everything I went through, this game was worth every moment. And hearing you talk about your experiences while standing in front of *that* door before progressing with *that* questline... I feel like I'm waving farewell to a Sprout at the end of The Vault. But it's still worth every moment.

  • @danh8804
    @danh8804 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    That cutscene just guts me. I think most of the individual moments in it are meant to be taken as literal, and it's just the whole thing strung together that's impressionistic. So I think that confrontation, that last plea, to her fellow man is a real thing that happened - probably the last thing she did before she pulled the trigger on "becoming" Hydaelyn after all the prep was done. Because she didn't want to do this, even knowing the future.
    I don't think any moment in any video game has fucked me up more than that cutscene, coming like 300 hours into a single coherent story, basically offering its take on what the meaning of life is, and doing so in a way that isn't completely laughable.

    • @MalzraAirwynn
      @MalzraAirwynn 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think a lot of it is her reflecting on memories. Like that guy getting eaten might have literally happened, but not with her and Emet so close doing nothing to help, more her remembering watching people die while being unable to help etc. It also wouldn't make sense for the sky to still be burning if Zodiark was summoned and the final days paused. So yeah it seems to be a sort of amalgamation of her memories and feelings, rather than taken 100% seriously.

But, it forced me go through them from the position of The Warrior of Light, and I was able to borrow her immense fortitude to see me through to the end, and it helped me find hope and purpose again. Friends and family played a huge part, and I don't want to downplay their contribution, but it is no exaggeration to say that this game saved my life. Whether it's all the times Hydaelyn took the hits for us or whether it's the Rejoinings wounding her, the story of a lowly sundered being like us being able to face down Emet Selch, the most powerful of all the Ancients, gives her the courage to walk her chosen path to the very end.

    You just go back to normal size, without anyone reversing the effect or any explanation as to why it just went away the moment you step back in the portal.
    It could have led to some hilarious scenes, if you had come back as a giant, before the effect of Emet's magic faded. ^^

      It's not just to prove a point as you say. There are other reasons, one ethical and one more technical. That ethics is that the ancients were becoming TOO dependent on Zodiark to solve problems, in fact Venat acted after the ancients were trying to make a third sacrifice only because they were unable to accept suffering. The more technical reasoning is that the ancients were too dense with ether, unable to interact with the dinamys, therefore unable to defeat and solve the root problem of the final days, making them always dependent on Zodiark for their survival.

      @@Akeche Ask yourself whether you’d want to be turned into 14 mindless blobs(that’s what they were right after sundering, see Nier Reincarnation crossover) in a hypothetical situation where your entire family is in a coma and you don’t want to leave them there, as well as wanting to rebuild your home after a cataclysmic event. If the answer is no than what Venat did is evil.

      Uhm they make a point of the consequence of what she did. Even Venat herself was very self aware of that fact. It's more grey than you think and a more realistic take on the perceptions of heroes and saviours, and asks the age old question: "Does the end justify the means?".

      @@vortex3833 The thing is, the whole thing with Zodiark is basically the same as the Emperor of Man, where they had to sacrifice half their population to him.
      Add that to the fact that they don't know the origins of the Final Days, nor do they want find out anyways to due to Zodiark's tempering, I don't know about you, but that sounds like a pretty bad spot to be in.
      What Venat did was bad, don't get me wrong. But compared to the alternative, what she did was necessary. There is no rebuilding when you are a thrall to a god that require constant supply of lives to stay alive.

      @@Akeche No, it's not. She chose to sacrifice her entire race for a sliver of hope that the new, sundered beings her act would create would find a way to survive a calamity she was unable (or rather unwilling) to avert, and a meaning to a question she herself couldn't answer. Someone that previously claimed would never give up and would not consider anything to be impossible, at the first signs of a real problem gave up and decided to pass responsibility for it all forward, to someone else.
      Not to mention, if we consider it fully, she actually fails. The world she created is not the one we come from - the world that comes from her actions is the Exarch's original timeline (which WON'T be saved by her plan). So, it's a doom of two worlds in exchange for a chance of maybe saving one.
      In a way, she's the exact mirror of Emet, with the only difference being which world one meant to save and which to destroy. If She is right, so was Emet. Consequently, if he was a villain, so is she. With the one exception being that she made her actions with full knowledge of what was to happen, so cannot be excused with not being able to see the whole picture.
      Oh, and BTW, the idea of nobility of suffering can go and die in the fire. Especially when it's used to justify suffering of OTHERS. Caused by the one that tries to use that justification.
