I don't know, I can imagine those landings and all the chaos happened afterwards. I always pray for them, remember them, even though I am not an American nor European.
AT 9 minutes it is not Steven Ray... but his name was Eddie Ray. He was my Battalion Commander of 2nd Light Armored Recon Bn. 99-03 at Lejeune. But there's more to the story . He was actually "ordered" to retreat... he didn't. When he pressed on and won the battle destroying several tanks, they were going to court martial him for disobeying a direct order. But because he was a black man and actually won the battle command was afraid there'd be too much blow-back... The leadership wanted to smoke him. He was a Captain back then.. Leadership made the decision award him the Navy Cross and give him a promotion. It was well deserved. In 2003 when we went to Iraq and fought again, Lt. Col Eddie Ray was the first one charging into battle. He was a great inspiration to myself and others in his battalion. He was later promoted to full bird and retired. I learned about the whole story and what went on behind the scenes from a friend of mine who was his superior back in the rear in 2014. Crazy... small world.
I look at alot of Iraqi army fire fights with coalition forces and all I can think is these guys got 0 range time with thier primary weapon systems. How the fuck can a brigade strength force not hit anything? Crazy.
Those soldiers weren't in the army because they liked it, most of them are little kids who failed school and drafted by force. Also, they had almost zero training, and no logistics whatsoever. The army was just bunch of civilians given rusty Ak-47s(except for the Republican guards) and told to fight or else their families pay for their execution. If i was in the same situation, I'd try my best not to pose as a threat to the more superior coalition forces.
The only real professional army Iraq had was the Republican Guards. The rest, as pointed out elsewhere, were literally nothing more than raw recruits with AK47s. As conscripts they were taking over from an exhausted army fresh out of the Iran/Iraq war. If I remember the history, Saddam was almost allied with the west due to the fact we disliked the Iranians more. He believed he could take Kuwait and noone would really care. This would give Iraq a huge boost in oil revenues. However, due to Britain's close links with Kuwait and the fear that Saddam might take lack of action as a green light to also go after the other gulf states. The other nations had even less army than Iraq, so NATO stepped in to secure it's own access to oil.
Does American tank crew literally played War Thunder: Real life edition. Like, no one got hurt, its like: see tank with thermals- shoot tank, see another tank with thermals-shoot tank.
superiority is why, and not just any one type of superiority, technological superiority, air superiority, intelligence superiority, training/experience superiority, superiority of equipment, everything. Iraq is prepared for cold war era style war but don't have advantages like jungles that the north Vietnamese had, and the enemy has modern weapons with modern technologies like sensors, gps, weapons that lock on and are designed to kill exactly the vehicles they are driving, and many more, with a command structure that keeps everything working together smoothly. The Iraqi army is also a lot of conscripts whereas the americans and other international armies are trained soldiers, the republican guard and other veteran units of the Iraqi army are different though as they likely have more experience then much of the allied coalition, they are the most well armed and full of the most experienced soldiers from the Iraq-Iran war
@@seanmac1793 There's a LOT more things to a plan than just the weather. If you've got a hundred things planned out and 90 go your way, it's rather odd to say things weren't going their way just because a tenth of the plan didn't work out, don't you think?
They could. It was by no means a foregone conclusion. but as they say a war is decided through many metrics and the war was over practically before the first shots were fired.
@@normiedeathsquad40 Yup, thanks to a long ass shite war with Iran years previously. Why the fuck Saddam thought he had any military strength left is beyond imagination.

Great job again, amazing quality and production quality! I have one suggestion, same as last video, some sort of scale would be really helpful, since the map is frequently and swiftly zooming in and out, it becomes quite easy to lose track of what exactly you're looking at, a scale would help to keep track of what sort of area is being dealt with and to make differentiation easier, especially since much of the background consists of rather uniform desert.

Honestly, Its hard to see how Iraq could have performed any better. They're overall plan was about as solid as it could possibly be, a defense in depth with weakest units taking the first hit and slow the attack, allowing stronger units in reserve time to react after the coalition attacks. Its basically the same as Germanys plan to stop an allied invasion of France, or the USSRs defense to German invasion. But the coalition vastly outnumbered them, had an overwhelming material advantage, the desert terrain had pretty much no natural defensive features, and they had superior technology and equipment in every regard. So with all that together its really no wonder the iraqis lost so handily. It didnt even matter how competent or incompetent their command were, they just physically could not compete with the coalition in any way.
Additionally most Iraqi troops were willing to surrender as soon as they realized that they were fighting a battle they couldn't win. There was no fighting spirit, no morale, no dogged determination. They weren't willing to fight and die for a dictator who treated them like disposable cannon fodder.
Very eager to see the British armoured division's feats in the war. They've been kinda muted thus far moving up, but once their attack started in reality....oh boy.

The amount of armour that the Coalition massed to deal with the Republican Guard shows a modicum of respect to them in my opinion. These videos are great lad, I have been looking for this exact blow by blow account of various conflicts, and desert storm just doesn’t seem to have been covered in this way until now.
I was 10 years old when this happened. This is the best description of the logistics of battle that I have ever seen! Amazing work! 👏 👏 👏

I look at alot of Iraqi army fire fights with coalition forces and all I can think is these guys got 0 range time with thier primary weapon systems. How the fuck can a brigade strength force not hit anything? Crazy.
First time shooting?
watched too much rambo
Pretty sure the boots in Vietnam had this exact same problem with new recruits that were pushed through training too quickly.
Very well done! Never have I seen such complexity so simple broken down into a fabulous narrative. Thanks for the work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I could easily watch a 3hr long version of this. So well done. Fantastic. Thank you.

They were living in the future, that's for sure.
Stay tuned. Not everything goes according to plan for American tankers.
superiority is why, and not just any one type of superiority, technological superiority, air superiority, intelligence superiority, training/experience superiority, superiority of equipment, everything.

I was 11 years old, watching these videos brought back memories and gave a better insight as to just how big this really was!
