This channel is hard to describe, because it's basically Joel waxing poetic about movies, but he does it in such a humble and unpretentious way. I'd also love to see a long-form video of Joel going through his collection and giving brief thoughts on the stuff he's seen.
It’s not exactly his collection, but his Letterboxd is really interesting to follow if you’d like to hear his thoughts on what he’s watching day to day
I adore my movie collection. There's no better feeling than making a recommendation for somebody to watch a movie, but instead of the typical "oh it's on Netflix" conversation...I get to just go over to my shelf, grab it and hand it right to them. I don't care when I get it back...I just hope that they enjoy it enough to come back for more...
My brother Blair lives without wifi in the woods. As a movie enthusiast, Dvd collecting is his life! He watches a new movie almost every night so at this point he has probably over 400! He has a lot of the criterion. He and I both love Kurasawa the best (seven samurai, yojimbo). Collecting is a great hobby especially when there are so many amazing movies that when you find them on dvd that you will watch hundreds of times. For us it is Nacho Libre and Black Dynamite. His collection also makes him a great person to buy gifts for! It is always so fun to buy someone a physical dvd and then watch it together and bond over it!
My sidetrack of collecting from my original goal has now spiraled into multiple bookshelves worth of DVD's/Blu-rays. I can stop anytime I want. I swear.
I’m 100% agree with Joel’s opinion on owning movies. I love collecting DVDs for the same reasons Joel talked about, and my friends always say “it’s so expensive” or “it’s on Netflix just watch it there”. But there’s something different that you can’t beat about owning physical copies of media. I just love it!
people used to buy dvds and records and cds because that was the way to consume that content, and i think its so fascinating we use those mediums now to show our love for the media we enjoy
A fellow physical media collector. I relate with this video so much. Like you, I moved to another city for a year, so I didn't bring my collection with me, but I miss it. If you ever put out Forget About Everything For a While or Island on Blu-ray, I will pick it up day one.
I very much prefer keeping a digital library, it takes less space and isnt tied to how well kept the disk is; I think havig both is provavly the most secure thing.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who still collects dvds. My latest side quest was collecting all the James Bond movies on BluRay, and not just the Eon Productions ones, but I tracked down the black and white 1954 Casino Royale, the HORRIBLE 1963 'comedy' version of Casino Royale, and the legal-loophole Never Say Never again. It was fun.
I think you're the only dude who actually helps me be ok with my insecurities. Not help, or make better, but be ok with em, and it's cathartic. Thanks for existing
It has been 4K UHD discs that have finally gotten me back into collecting. Hopefully that doesn't sound prudish! Used to have this odd smattering of VHS tapes, DVDs and Blu-Rays. A pretty large smattering, too! Still have some in Grandma's basement over there. Over yonder. But for now, having moved around and pared down so many times, I'm all digital! It makes me feel like I've got no soul, y'know? just an NPC in Wall-E, man. BUT! After the irresponsible expense that was a new TV during the mindless, amorphous pandemic era, it's so satisfying to collect these discs whose quality can't be replicated in a stream. I've got this excellent Nolan box set, and I can't wait for Tarantino, Spielberg, Scorsese and Fincher receive the same treatment. I wonder if Criterion does UHD, I'll have to look. I miss the meditative process of browsing movies, as you've described it here (very nicely!). A decade ago, I decided to take part-time work at a Blockbuster while I was in film school. It was such a joy to look around the store, browse the classics, check out the upcoming movies (we got to take them home and watch them a week before release; it blew my feeble young mind) and most of all I loved helping others find something to enjoy. That job was 100% about spending time with people. The movies just made for a perfect backdrop. Picturesque and nostalgic! Chill and somehow cozy, despite being a corporate entity. But I digress, old boy, I digress, haha.. mine was but a brief stay, as Blockbuster sank like the Titanic shortly after I was hired. But the memories are golden. Anyways, Joel, a quick aside if I may. I have no idea how this letter will read. I guess it's a comment, not a letter. I think I'm too old to leave typical comments, too storied and wise. So not sure how this comment will read. Perhaps my voice in your mind is that of an insane person. Perhaps it is instead a wind-battered, salt-flecked seaman in the dead of night, musing whilst I whittle a block of wood down into an ocarina, which I will soon play to great effect. Hell, it may even sound like I'm on drugs! Which I'm not! But that reminds me.. the aside! You're fantastic in High on Life man. I was already so excited for this game, knowing it would be chock full of Roiland humor and good times and maybe even fun gameplay! But I didn't expect you to appear. You humor mixes in so well, as it has in the videos you've made together on your main channel in the past. It's really brought the whole experience up a notch for me - a wonderful surprise! So uh, just wanted to say that! That's why I came here today. But damn, this was a great video too. All the best to you man, and a happy holiday to all! ❄
I’ve never been disappointed with a Criterion movie. Some were a bit boring, but I can’t say I haven’t learned something about filmmaking or life from them. Thanks to your recommendations, Joel, I found Kiarostami’s _Taste of Cherry,_ which is probably my favorite movie in the collection at this point.
Collecting things in general is just such a special thing to everyone who does it. And everyone has their own thing that they collect. For me I collect figures. Some of them from my childhood and some of them are the more expensive super detailed the years and it's just hard to put into words why except for when I go into my room and see my desk and my shelves and look at them it makes me smile
It's really cool to hear the movie collectors also have those rare finds. I never even thought of movie collecting as a thing until now. I kind of had that same thing where if I go to a thrift store or whatever and I see a Game Boy game or something or an old Star Wars figure that's like gold right there my dude
I took my collection, and kept about 20 of my favorites, took the rest and put the disks in a big sleeve consolidator thing and got rid of the original cases. Just couldnt justify taking up that much space of movies that werent special to my heart. But I still have em to watch, and my favorites now feel a bit more special to me
I really love the way you talk about movies and film. I have a huge VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray collection I've been adding to since I was a little kid. My dad liked collecting movies and it rubbed off on me at a young age.
Very relatable! I accumalated around 1,000 DVDs and Blu-Rays over my obsessive years, only to also find it difficult to maintain when moving house many times... It's also a relief to hear I'm not the only one with that very dream! Except mine always end just as I go to actually pay for said movie and then I'm left feeling upset for the rest of the morning
Last year my mom got me a record player for Christmas, now whenever I go to thrift stores I like to pick out a few albums that look cool which has led to me finding so many good songs from people I’ve never heard of before-it’s been really fun :D I also thought I would start buying movies-the last one I thrifted was paranorman which is one of my most favorite movies and I hope I can find more of my favorites but the movie sections usually aren’t that big here This video was a really nice watch, I really like people talking about things they like
I could just watch you talking about movies all day! I too wish to start a DVD collection but by the time grew old enough to buy movies, digital streaming was already popular and its much harder to find DVDs these days, especially in the area I live. oh well, I still got letterboxd.
The special features with commentaries from directors, dop, actors, etc. are for me my film school (along with what I learn on TH-cam). They are way more informative and helpful than the university was with its being secrative for four years and costing a fortune for no information. Ugh won't go to school ever again if they are like that still. What a waste. Anyway, I was even bartering DVDs due to lack of funds. Now the stores no longer exist for DVDs as everything is online. Thank you everyone on the internet for sharing your knowlege!
I used to collect packets of silica gel. I had about 150, with print in several different languages. I finally decided it was dumb and threw them out during a move. I also collected foreign words for "monkey", but I've forgotten most of them. My favorite was Tibetan. I also learned that many languages do not have a word for monkey, and just lump them in with apes.
Im starting to get my life figured out, a decade late, and i like your approach to getting into movies, it sounds like a hobby thats easy to access and be enthralled by. It sounds like an easy way to fall into a rabbit hole, but in a good way. Not to sink days in a row into seeing films, but more of a reward and some self love, being able to be focused on the movie and nothing else for an hour or three. Thanks for showing your collection, appreciated. Luv ya right back man, Peace
I never really gave much importance to having phisical copies of movies but seeing you so passionate about it kinda makes me wanna get my favorites at least, just for fun
When you've moved around as much as I have through the years probably the hardest thing you can keep is your movie collection. 😅 You talking about the selection of movies on databases like Netflix, does remind me of your dating saga film when you're supposed to watch a movie but end up not, and that's ok. You should have had two DVDs to select from. 🤣 Dreams are crazy... I'm not a dream analyst but I've studied my own. So maybe the nonsensical titles of the movies are things that you want to become movies and you cherish them like Criterion films.. Like everyday silly things that in your mind deserve to be movies. Idk, my new film has a dream sequence and meditative moments in it so dreams have been on my mind as well. Thank you, Joel. ❤️
I only have enough DVD's to fill one of those black shelf units, but my collection has grown this year. The public library has a little store selling things people donate like books and movies and I'm always finding some old favorites from 2000's and early 2010's for two dollars each. Just today I completed the Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and also got 2005 War of the Worlds.
i found the 1998 criterion edition of 'seven samurai' for 2 bucks at a thrift store in sweden and that's how me and my friends watched it for the first time! a special moment
I have the same dream about video games! And I have for a while haha, even when I'd go to garage sales with my dad back in the day when I was younger, I think I began having dreams about finding rare Super Nintendo games for really cheap. I still remember the layout of the thrift store that I dreamt up, even though it never existed. So weird.
When I finally settled and built a house it was so nice to unpack and display my DVDS, there's about 4x more than you right now but I'm 13 years older! Some of best are missing, Cannibal the Musical,Citizen Kane etc. It's been important since I quit drinking in 2009 but it's great to hear your perspective on "older" tech ha. Love your content and glad to see you have broad film tastes too. Edit: Also at somewhere around 7:30 minutes into the movie "The Core" its a fish that breaks the cafe window, not a bird. Fun editing fact!
Its good to know I’m not the only one with a bunch of criterions that hasn’t found the time to watch the special features and commentaries because I’m too busy out buying other movies to watch
I'd love to have a collection like yours sometime or having a collection in general, I agree there's something more personal and interactive with physical collections. Like you said the amount of films on streaming services are overwhelming and I think picking out a movie at a thrift/book store where you're not really guided by an algorithm you can find some neat and memorable stuff :) Thank you for talking about Criterion and other niche artists like Ross Mcelwee, I believe I've barely scratched the service when it comes to films so thanks for shedding light
Next time you're in California you have to check out the Victorville Film Archive. It's this huge film collection of all classics. Unfortunately they had a fire but it's building back up fast.
I wanted to keep all my DVDs and Blurays in cases but after a dozen moves, I started putting them into the bulk cases. There's still a few special DVDs I've kept because their cases were so unique, but had almost 1000 of them between movies and series...but I'll always prefer buying them to any streaming services. I like having them and having the opportunity to watch them at my leisure instead of the whim of the streaming service.
When you say you want to take these with you. Are you gonna be buried in some kind of Egyptian DVD Pyramid. I remember when the criterion collection was on Hulu. I got to watch so many movies that I never seen. Didn’t know about the channel! Thanks for that! I think your dreams have to be because you’re so passionate about movies and the hidden gems you can find right? Like I’m a foodie and I care about finding interesting and delicious foods that people don’t know about. And it seems like your passion is, and has always been movies, so it makes sense that you would want to explore the depths of that. Just part of the fun of being passionate about something as being able to share it with people who don’t have a clue! That’s why I enjoy watching your videos. I watch a lot of movies and when I watch your videos, I feel like I don’t know anything about movies. It’s nice to learn from a passionate person. There’s my armchair psychology. I like when you to share these little videos about yourself and what you’re passionate about. Passion is always nice hear.
Trakt TV is great for a digital version of this. Lets you track what you watched, ratings, what to watch next, filmographies, which ones you actually collected, etc.
Hey that collecting every movie in a directors filmography is what I started with, now got a little over 500. Also it's not a goal but more a rule that if I see a nic cage movie I need to buy it, don't know how it started but rules are rules
Your dream reminds me of a similar frequently recorded phenomenon in the Bionicle community lol. Instead of criterion films, it’s bionicles of course, but otherwise the same. Love your films and your discussions. It’s pretty empowering :)
This feels like game collecting to me, as something that I got into around middle school, enjoyed throughout high school, and still have my collection, enjoy it, but rarely really add to it
Those thrift store Criterions are such a rush. Of course I already have a copy of Robocop, but finding the OOP Criterion version for $3 is an irresistible steal.
I'd be interested in hearing you talk about your childhood movies (if you still have any), a good amount of the movies I own are ones I loved as a kid (with many of them being the copy my family rented from the local video rental store and then bought when that store went out of business), and I've seen those movies more than I'll probably see any other movies, so I think it would be fun to hear you talk about any movies like that
I'm an avid dream interpreter, though it's really just about telling people what they kinda already know in a different way (same with fortune-telling, and maybe art in general?). Your dream of finding a Criterion dvd in a thrift shop reminds me of the feeling I get when I stumble across a beautiful effect while editing, or I find a video that unexpectedly moves me - little moments that expand my understanding of what my life could be. I'm always hoping that there will be one more surprise around the corner...
I am building a collection of every animated feature film (sans anime). In the highest available resolution. DVD is just not high enough resolution, and I only get DVDs when that is the best available format.
Hard to say what your dreams could mean, but at least they seem to be quite positive, so it might just be a thriving period where you get what you wanted.
Love this. On the rare chance I get to go to a thrift I make a beeline to the DVDs to see if I can find a grail there (although my grails are low print runs, haven't come across any yet) Living in Australia, until recently I only had one Criterion because I loved the movie so much, Videodrome on Blu ray, the main thing that stopped me getting more was their damn region locks! I actually have a BR player that can switch (pretty hard to find!) But I always forget the code and never write it down because I'm a dum dum. But they started releasing region B now too! So I might grab some more! Oh I do have their Beastie Boys DVD too already actually (cos virtually every DVD player here is region free).
I grew up with old parents and so many times they'd share a memory of something with me and when I'd ask "What happened to that?" they could never remember. I started collecting movies as a way of ensuring that 10, 20, 30 years from now I'll have all those experiences "bottled" on a shelf and I'll always be able to share them. Anyway, come on out to LA or San Francisco. Amoeba Records is a MASSIVE warehouse that has a whole section for movies - that's where I've bought most of my Criterion movies.
Libraries are a great place to buy movies. They discard a lot and they sell them very cheaply. At My local library it's $1 per dvd and $2 per Blu-ray. And they aren't all old movies either when new movies get less popular and the library doesn't need as many copies they will sell a few of them and my Library has a policy to sell and replace movies after x amount of circulations so stuff is always going out. Ive gotten quite a few criterions for $1 a piece
I've been collecting movies since VHS was the format of choice, if you're ever passing through west TN, stop by for a rest, pick any movie from my collection and we can annoy my wife by nerding out over it
Criterion is a good way to start watching movies that aren't just basic American pop culture stuff. I slowed down buying Criterion though after I hit like 300 of their movies and box sets. I only get the stuff I'm really interested in now.
I've had dreams of going through piles of electronics that someone left to throw out, and they're all amazing retro PC parts and game consoles, I wonder if it's similar? Just wishful thinking? I've also had some dreams, but not as many, about finding money on the ground. I've found a lot of resources on the web about that, but they all have conflicting opinions about it. I guess, in the end, our dreams come from our own unique minds, and only we can truly know what they mean, even if we have to sleep on it a few times.
I got into buying blu rays quite recently and I’ve found it very rewarding. I find myself appreciating the film more when I own it in my collection. But I wonder why are you still getting DVD when we have 4k and regular blu rays in the market. I have some movies on DVD and I hate how bad they look compared to blu rays.
While, surely there are perks around to collecting DVDs and I'm no collector. But I wonder what you think of films that you really regret buying? Does it just sit there and you give it a stern look every time you pass by? Haha

I recently started adding VHS tapes
Local thrift stores sell them for .99 and comedy/action films look great on that format
Well, “great”
A few times a year I have this recurring dream that takes place at a thrift store in which I find a rare copy of Pikmin on the GameCube

I’ve also had dreams where I randomly get criterions out of nowhere and then wake up and get disappointed that It wasn’t actually real.

I don't really collect. But sometimes after watching something I buy it physically if it was particularly to my taste. It's like a token of affection.

Great work with the copy of black sheep, definitely hard to find!
I'm definitely interested in learning more about your collection!
Next time you're in California you have to check out the Victorville Film Archive. It's this huge film collection of all classics. Unfortunately they had a fire but it's building back up fast.
That's a great book growing out of your shoulder!
Joel!
I like these videos a lot
Hey that collecting every movie in a directors filmography is what I started with, now got a little over 500. Also it's not a goal but more a rule that if I see a nic cage movie I need to buy it, don't know how it started but rules are rules
Your dream reminds me of a similar frequently recorded phenomenon in the Bionicle community lol. Instead of criterion films, it’s bionicles of course, but otherwise the same.
Love your films and your discussions. It’s pretty empowering :)
I got into DVD collecting a 2 or 3 years ago. Joel sums up the experience perfectly.
God he's literally me.
I want to start collecting movies too. I might try going to some thrift stores and looking around
Hard to say what your dreams could mean, but at least they seem to be quite positive, so it might just be a thriving period where you get what you wanted.
love ya Joel
DVDs feel such more valuable than Blu-Ray maybe it's god forbit the nostalgia now
Gonna show this to my friend who is an animator and filmmaker, his collection looks a lot like this, lot more cage films though
The dreams 😂😂👌✨
I like how you randomly show your movies 🎥 no one does that 🎬 I'm going to look some up 🤙
Love this. On the rare chance I get to go to a thrift I make a beeline to the DVDs to see if I can find a grail there (although my grails are low print runs, haven't come across any yet)
Living in Australia, until recently I only had one Criterion because I loved the movie so much, Videodrome on Blu ray, the main thing that stopped me getting more was their damn region locks!
I've been collecting movies since VHS was the format of choice, if you're ever passing through west TN, stop by for a rest, pick any movie from my collection and we can annoy my wife by nerding out over it
I would love to add your films to my collection Joel
Criterion is a good way to start watching movies that aren't just basic American pop culture stuff. I slowed down buying Criterion though after I hit like 300 of their movies and box sets. I only get the stuff I'm really interested in now.
I might have to edit this video so it's just those "RrrrrRrrr" sounds he makes.
I mainly collect VHS & books 📚 now, oddly enough 😅. LOVE YA, JOEL!!
Good to know I'm not the only one who has dreams about DVD hunting
I've had dreams of going through piles of electronics that someone left to throw out, and they're all amazing retro PC parts and game consoles, I wonder if it's similar? Just wishful thinking? I've also had some dreams, but not as many, about finding money on the ground. I've found a lot of resources on the web about that, but they all have conflicting opinions about it. I guess, in the end, our dreams come from our own unique minds, and only we can truly know what they mean, even if we have to sleep on it a few times.
When I had no internet or cable tv, I'd buy two or three dvds a month to watch on the weekends.
Has anyone seen Chan is missing from the criterion collection? that movie was amazing to me, would recommend it
Get Joel into the Criterion closet
I can tell you're in MA because there's a copy of Fever Pitch in frame.
5:20 love me an accidental Bloodborne reference
I love collecting movies!
Their is something funny about Joel's tone even when his not trying to be funny
Someone please post a link to Joel's old movie vlog channel here if you find it!
can we have a collection tour someday Joel?
You know, I thought your last vid with Trent looked more Massachucetts-y (cold) than your usuals
I do this with cd’s
omg its the movie guy!
My DVD collection is almost entirely bad and silly movies that I wanted to have a way to show people.
Got any Breen on that top shelf? He could decipher your dreams.
you should make a vid about your criterions one day too! (if you can find them!)
Nice.
you going on RLM soon??
I got into buying blu rays quite recently and I’ve found it very rewarding. I find myself appreciating the film more when I own it in my collection. But I wonder why are you still getting DVD when we have 4k and regular blu rays in the market. I have some movies on DVD and I hate how bad they look compared to blu rays.
As a jungian psychotherapist, my professional interpretation of your dream is: Joel loves movies
How *DAAAARE* you sandwich Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li between Battlefield Earth and The Room? 🤣🤣🤣
I just steal everything off the internet these days
While, surely there are perks around to collecting DVDs and I'm no collector. But I wonder what you think of films that you really regret buying? Does it just sit there and you give it a stern look every time you pass by? Haha
You're so pretentious and self loaded. I can not believe you just said that. Offencnssiv!! Jk. Love you Joel. Spread the word ✊
Pulp fiction is over rated
