My wife and I have known Drew for a long time, and she and I played in several bands with him, playing everything from Pink Floyd to Beatles to Grateful Dead to Stevie Wonder. We always enjoyed playing with Drew, for obvious reasons, but the friendship meant even more. Truly a fine man.
I had the pleasure of seeing Drew pick live at what I believe to be the first Billy Strings show in NJ back in 2017. Real tiny joint called The Saint in Asbury Park. Never would have known he was also a hell of a guitar picker! I really enjoyed the funk hybrid!
Thank you for this beautiful video! I've always wondered where you went after Billy Strings. Thank you for your brilliant playing on the earlier Billy Strings albums. Regards from Germany and all the best!
A super interview. What a humble fellow Drew is to be so accomplished. Mickey- compliments to you for the very complement you paid to Drew.. You are as an interviewer what Drew is as a "sideband".
I saw Drew with Billy in my home town. All I can say is when Drew left and the current mandolin player in Billy's band took over it took a long time to get up to Drew's speed.
What an interesting interview. Thank you. No way, no how am I at their level but something sticks with me. I played violin and viola with an actively performing duo and we parted ways because one of them wanted me to play note for note the same way every time. Now I'm in a festival band playing fiddle and mandolin and have the freedom to totally improvise.
Great interview! Drew is a great mandolin player but why the title of Billy's "First Mandolin" player? It's well known that Billy spent years with mandolin player Don Julin who was hugely instrumental (pun intended) as a major building block in Billy's career.
What a great interview! I've been blessed to be Drew's friend for several years, and I relish the chances I've had to pick with him. Here's one of those sessions: th-cam.com/video/_DS-TuEacrM/w-d-xo.html. Ain't Asheville great?!?
Drew is 100% my favorite friend to play music with.

Drew was the first mandolin player in the band the Billy put together (the first incarnation of the current band)
@@MickeyAbraham2022 Pretty sure you (and others) are smart enough to get the intent and accuracy of the comment.
Seems like a great human and an amazing musician. Maybe I’ll run into him at a jam someday. Thanks for posting.
Don't you mean Don Julin? - Billy String's first mandolin player... but - probably- - could go back further than that too.
Drew was the first mando player in Billy’s band that he put together !
Billy was don's guitar player.
That wasn't Billy's band it was a duo group.
