    I bought this compressor last week and took it to practice yesterday. It's great ! I just need to mess around with it a little more, but yes I agree that compression is the best kept secret. People usually don't buy it first when testing pedals because it's not a "fun" pedal.

  • @mattpfannstiel9154
    @mattpfannstiel9154 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    FYI the attack setting is the time it takes for the compressor to "clamp down" on the signal and affect it. Turning the knob clockwise isn't doesn't affect the gain of the pedal, it slows down the attack.

    What do you think about the low end roll-off that is comparable to the MXR DynaComp according to many comments on the web? I tried yesterday on bass, I noticed but it’s kind of not bad so far, just sound a little thighter and less mushy. Didn’t try with full band and with my tube bass amp yet, but maybe I will notice more the bass roll-off in the mix.

  • @justyoutubin

    Great timing since I was just starting to look at compressor pedals!
    You say they help cover up some sloppy playing. Do you think the pedal teaches you to play sloppy since you're relying on it to help you sound good? For a lousy bass player, will a compressor let me relax and stay lousy thinking I'm sounding better?

    • @GunsandGuitars
      @GunsandGuitars 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s possible that it could teach bad habits, but I typically don’t use it when practicing, only when performing or recording, so it makes me sound a little more professional. But in my bedroom, I don’t use it. I want all my flaws exposed so that I can learn to play better.

    Hey Dan, would you be able to recommend a cheap buffer pedal? I've noticed with all your pedal reviews that you emphasize that they include 'true bypass', meaning that the tone is unaffected by the pedal when deactivated. However, a situation I used to come across when playing with a bunch of true bypass pedals and some relatively long instrument cables (roughly 5 - 7 meters) was that I was losing a lot of treble, which got worse when I put a wah pedal in the chain. It drove me a little mad until a friend of mine explained that I was inadvertently creating a long capacitor which was sucking all the top end, and he recommended adding a few buffered bypass pedals or a dedicated buffer to correct this.

    • @GunsandGuitars
      @GunsandGuitars 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you are correct, for long signal chains and lots of pedals you will lose tone and you need a buffer to prevent this. I haven't used any of the cheap ones so I can't recommend any, but TomTop does have some available. Really, if you're that concerned about your tone, it's probably wise to invest in a good buffer.

    It sounds good... just one question... I noticed on other reviews of this item that, when you hit the button to activate (or deactivate) it, you have a very thick (noisy) click that surely would interfere with the sound and the song... is it normal? I don't think so. By the way in this video you cannot notice this fact because the moments you push on the button to activate the pedal are not shown

    I see you also have the Kokko overdrive, is this compressor any better as a boost into a distorted amp? I have the FOD3 and I really just don't like how it colors the sound. I know they also make a booster pedal, but I also would like to use the compression for very clean stuff.

    • @GunsandGuitars
      @GunsandGuitars 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Compression can be used as a booster in a pinch, but it’s best used for...well...compression. If you want a boost pedal then get a boost pedal. I agree, the FOD3 is not the greatest overdrive pedal. It’s good for a trick or two, but overall there are better sounding pedals.

    • @Lavabug
      @Lavabug 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the FOD with grit on it's own, as a way to practice chops with low gain, but I hate it combined with anything else. Sucks the tone out of my marshall and S&K preamp pedal

    • @GunsandGuitars
      @GunsandGuitars 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it depends on the guitar and amp setup as with all compressors. It's quiet if you don't push it too hard.

  • @jackhaugh

    Where exactly would this work best in the signal chain? I’m currently running in order; and clearly not all at once, a cry baby, 3699 Fuzz, Metal Muff, small clone chorus, back talk delay, time shadows delay, amp.
    I’m also receiving a Joyo vintage boost pedal in this shipment that I plan on putting between the wah and the fuzz.
    Any thoughts?

    • @ot4kon
      @ot4kon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuzz and metal muff will compress the sound enough, you will not need compression using high gain pedals. Compressor are usually put in the beginning of the signal chain.

    I just bought one of these for those few times I need "reeeeeally long" notes on my bass without requiring a 're-strike' of the string. For some reason, when I have the compressor on (even by itself), I seem to lose volume on my E string and to a lesser extent my A string. Any thoughts? Settings are (approximately) Attack = 10 O'Clock, Sustain = 11 O'Clock and Level 10 O'Clock. It's 2nd on the pedal board after the Rowin Tuner. There is a Morley Mini-Volume between the compressor and the converted Bogen Tube amp.
    BTW - I have been playing in my church Worship Team for 11 years.
    EDIT 7/25/2019: Problem solved, upped the Power Supply to 500mA. All notes are now equally compressed/sustained.

      I resolved my loss of volume and 'tone squashing" by upping the power supply capacity to 500mA (1/2 Amp) to the Compressor Pedal. Maybe yours is starved for amperage/voltage as well!

    the noise isnt neccesarry from the pedal it might come from the noise floor beeing pulled up when you compress the signal enough

      And also when it's giving that kind of boost, you should expect added hiss

      The Guitar is a schecter tempest. The bass is a custom build I did.

    Schematically could you show how this pedal compaired to a fuzz or a distortion or an overdrive are made? Im interested in non harsh clipping
    Or more positive wavechange and cant decide on a proper pedal. Dont want hiss dont like gates.

    I had never used compression in my playing until recently. should have maybe started small with something like this but I went straight for an MXR M87. still trying to dial in the right sound for my playing but as far as explanation and functions go this definitely helps. thanks for sharing!

    Hey Dan, nice video!! And I would like to know if you could make a review for guitar and bass of the Nux Roctary (it s not a cheap pedal, but sounds great the organ emulator). Greetins from Brasil

      Guns and Guitars Thanks for the attention. I ask about this pedal because I love 70's bands, especially Deep Purple, and the sound of that rock keyboard of Jon Lord!!

    I use one to calm my Mel9 (Melotron) pedal down a bit which replicates the capricious nature of Melotron too well !

    A newbie here. What does boost mean? Does it mean louder volume?

    • @dinopipasworld9516
      @dinopipasworld9516 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep buddy, there are treeble booster, volume booster and bit more but they basically do the same which is give you more volume
