What a well made documentary! All four of my grandparents were in their early teens in central Naples when this occurred. It was a chaotic time with the bombs plus Vesuvius exploding.

My uncle told me that the ash fertilized the soil so much there was no place to put all the wheat. Even churches were packed full. This was more than 60 miles inland!

OMG!! These people took so long to leave.....some were so close !! I had no idea Vesuvius erupted at this time....very interesting video. So much devastation !!It is shocking to me to learn that 3 million people live around Vesuvius......oh dear !!

I thought the same thing. They were way too close, standing around watching.

Fortunately, American and British soldiers in the area worked to help evacuate locals (remember this happened exactly as the Italian World War II campaign against Germany was being fought). The US lost multiple aircraft and airfields to the ash and debris. As a British newsreel put it, the Allies were now at war with nature, and man wasn't winning this one. Thankfully it wasn't worse than it was, but sad what happened to all the towns and homes.

My grandad was there in ww2, and took pics from a mountain across from it.

No doubt the U.S. Planes that were in the air during the eruption were in for a treat when they saw the volcano erupt.

Interesting what people take with them, small statues, wine. I would just take photos and like things and far, far sooner!

if the allies knew how to harvest Volcanic Ash what they could have done was use the Ash from Mount Vesusvius then ship that to Kent Coast for D-Day then After operation dragoon Invasion of German controlled Vichy France then they could have added the volcanic ash into modern concrete which the Allies used to rebuild former Luftwaffe Air bases in France and Belgium. Post 1945 the West German Autobahn network Excellent film

No they are saints, although i'm protestant and not catholic so I cant really tell you who the ones shown and mentioned in the film are or what they did. But yes they are saving their statues of the saints because to the roman catholic's the saints are people recognised by god for doing good deeds so they protect anything to do with them.

I still think this could have been caused by a hot-dogger US Army bomber scoring a direct hit on the crater with a bomb/bombs to see what happened.
