Vastly underrated by whom? Not by you and certainly not by me and probably not by anyone else either! The piano adds wonderful riffs to this perfectly perfect composition! It's all so excellent! Every part fits together fabulously!
When I first seen this as a kid 30 years ago I said that someday I’m going to learn the guitar just to play this song. Glad I can say I finally did it.
i am always and forever amazed at this version of Layla...it was the first time i listened to an unplugged over an electric version and i know why now. the rhythm and bass and lyrics all make better sense as a love song than a rock song! love eric always for eternity
Its because the tune acoustically, is soooo intimate...Its a love song between Eric and audience....I love sing with just acoustic guitar...For me, its like a love letter that I'm letting the audience in on....
I was at band rehearsal last night. We had taken a break and this was playing on the radio outside where we were all having a smoke break and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. This song always brings me back to being a kid in the 90's. This song (and version) has always been so magical to me. It is magic like this that strongly encouraged me to take up music to begin with. I love his work.
I remember coming across this unplugged version when I was 13 and immediately fell in love with it. I think I had a VHS recording of it and couldn’t stop watching it! Brilliant version...brings back fond memories of my formative years.
No, it was my Dad. He was actually invited to perform with Clapton but denied so that he wouldn't steal the spotlight. He actually taught Clapton that solo, and how to play the guitar!

My favorite from Clapton! But now, I cry when I hear this song because it reminds me of my kitty, Layla. I got her when she was 8 weeks old. Was in my car wondering what do I name this beautiful kitten? Then Eric Clapton's Layla came on the radio-BOOM! Layla. She was a beautiful kitty! Passed away a year and a half ago.
Michelle L Hello Michelle L, just saw your post of 8 months ago as I was listening to this unique acoustic version of this song and I just wish to say I'm so sorry for your lost its so different how your kitty got her name Layla She must have been a truly unique kitty animals are sent into our lives for a season or so to bless help and yes even to comfort us in this ole troubled world yes cry for Layla as you must and even grieve for her to began your healing but also rememember Layla with her uniqueness and for the joy and love she gave you just give it time and later as you are able to handle it who knows what good thing may happen!!!!!! my thoughts go out to you at this time!!!
My cousin gave this album to her mom while we were driving home from a fair with me sitting in the back of the car watching and listening, now that I'm older I finally realize how cool my cousin was to give a gift like this and also how cool my Aunt is as well to be a fan of clapton...they never cease to surprise me even today. Now 29 years old I still watch my aunt get gifts from her daughter, as she shares an apartment with my mom ❤
I love this version of Layla so much I learnt it on the guitar and almost play along to it every day since about 8 months ago, the solos never get boring !
I was playing guitar in a band when Eric was in The Yardbirds never really knew how good he was until Cream. 50yrs later and he is now a legend another inspiration alongside Hank Marvin who inspired most of the great guitarists.
I remember this exact recording was constantly played on the local radio station back when I started the fourth grade at a new school. It was a hard year for me but music, including this song, helped me cope.
What'll you do when you get lonely And nobody's waiting by your side? You've been running and hiding much too long. You know it's just your foolish pride. Layla, you've got me on my knees. Ya boi I get what's she's saying. It's not like a metal head-banging, more like a heavy rhythmic nod, especially when Clapton's making that guitar cry.
One of my favorite Eric Clapton songs, but I favor the electric guitar version. 2 yrs ago when my sister asked me for a name suggestion for her unborn girl, this was my first and only name suggestion. I LOVE this song.
When I start listening to this version of this song, I can listen to it over and over and over again. I'm so happy this version exists. I favor it over the original by far.
Sheila Krest hey thanks, us Eric’s are always out here trying our best to make everyone else’s day as fantastic as possible, so some praise is gratefully appreciated👍
these guys are truly amazing Clapton, Frey,,Plant..so many to mention from that era very talented real stand up men in spite of tradgity always write great meanful music im 49 & always look up to theae guys im glad i was around in there prime God bless!✨💫🌠💥💯😊
+diabolicallink The problem is they dropped the last (and best) 5 minutes of the song. Such a fantastic, epic piece of music. No reason they shouldn't have played it.
I remember the first time I saw that unplagged concert... It was 1992. I had Hotbird satellite TV and only foreign language programs for me, MTV among others ... so much has happened since then...but this music still leaves chills
I actually prefer this over the regular electric version, the electric version is far too fast and doesn't seem to convey the emotion that the acoustic does.
Absolutely right. At first I didn't know about the electric version at all (I've heard Layla couple years ago on the radio). And when people say the electric one is the "regular" one I can't believe it (I didn't like it tbh) Especially the solo part is what I like the most and learned myself to play it.
I agree.....I grew up hearing the original version, but once I heard the acoustic version......I never looked back.....I totally groove on this version!!!
For those that are unaware the song Layla is about the USS Layla. A ship that sank during a storm off the coast of Brazil in 1898. The entire crew went down with the ship along with a shipment of gold that was rumored to be on board. Knowledge is power
Not even close. Layla was inspired by 2 things 1st a Arabic story about a 7th century poet called Layla & Majnun. Basically this story was one of the original versions of Romeo & Juliet first written around 1200 AD (800+ years ago and 400 years before Shakespeare). The 2nd thing the song is based on was Clapton fell in love with Pattie Boyd who at the time was married to George Harrison (lead guitarist from the Beatles). The song came out in 71, Boyd divorced Harrison in 77 and married Clapton in 79. I tried to give you consolation When your old man had let you down Like a fool, I fell in love with you Turned my whole world upside down
Michelle L Hello,Michelle L, Song has been going Thur my mind tonite just spotted your second comment boy Michelle L, you sure were blessed to go to that concert and see Mr.Eric Clapton perform Michelle L, you did indeed received a gift from above!!!!!!!!
The piano is massively underrated in this song. Brilliant.
Chuck Leavell
brillant
It's the piano and guitar that makes this version of Layla sooo good, brilliant in fact.
Vastly underrated by whom? Not by you and certainly not by me and probably not by anyone else either! The piano adds wonderful riffs to this perfectly perfect composition! It's all so excellent! Every part fits together fabulously!
Chuck definitely adds a subtle beauty to this song, but listen to his playing on Old Love from this album and you will melt into a puddle.
Literally this specific recording of Layla made me want to play guitar. 20 years later I'm still playing
I know right. Especially the phrasing of the intro solo is what got me hooked.
I sure like showing this song to young people who have high end/ well made guitars! They really like the song! THANKS ERIC! 😁😊
❤
Me too mate.
I recently just found an old cd of the entire live album and a day later I started playing acoustic because of it
i dont care how many times ive heard this song or ever will, it gives me goosebumps EVERYTIME. This is a timeless classic that can never be lost.
Straight.
Panty.
Dropper.
LOVE this version 😍 💓
Hey are you still alive?
Absolutely right! That’s the reason, why I’ve got the cd version at home!
my hero: the guy who went "woooo" in the solo. best "wooo" ever in the history of live music.
Agreed!
Right? I've heard this version so many times, the "woo" is now a part of the song for me. The guy is my spirit animal! :D
Lol I so agree:D
During Dickie Betts' solo in Whipping Post live at the Fillmore East some guy screams out yeahh! during some of the most intense playing
Arash Amiri agreed
“See If You Can Spot This One” will always be lyrics that’s part of the song to me
I always say that part
Isn't it the name of the song?
When I first seen this as a kid 30 years ago I said that someday I’m going to learn the guitar just to play this song. Glad I can say I finally did it.
Profile pic checks out.
Good job!
I see I have my new goal. To be like you.
This is definitely the coolest version of this song.
I agree
Eric Clapton is simply the best.
I like playing the original version right before playing this one.
AGREED !
Oh yasss, sexy af! 💖💓💃🎵
i am always and forever amazed at this version of Layla...it was the first time i listened to an unplugged over an electric version and i know why now. the rhythm and bass and lyrics all make better sense as a love song than a rock song! love eric always for eternity
I guess it's blues rather than rock. Anyway, it's absolutely perfect! I listen to it over and over!
Its because the tune acoustically, is soooo intimate...Its a love song between Eric and audience....I love sing with just acoustic guitar...For me, its like a love letter that I'm letting the audience in on....
This version is superior. Best Eric Clapton song. Gives me chills!
oui ; c'vachement bien....
My dad's been gone for almost 8 yrs. (motorcycle accident) This is how we stay in touch....miss you pops

definitely the best version of layla.

too close to call
I'm
better than original!!! at least for me
there both unreal
People always say you can't beat the original No matter what song it is. But this is something special
Loved Eric's unplugged version of this all-time classic.
It's been playing in my head five straight days. Best song ever
for me, been playing in my head five straight years. 😂
Yes Mr Clapton, we can spot your greatness!!💙😎🔥🎸
I come here everyday, to feel happy for 4 min of my life.
Same.
Dude, that's deeper than the song
Same here
bro, that shit was deep
A trick : watch series on Flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
The piano work at 02:45 is absolutely elite.

This is by far his best version. But, this song just gives me goosebumps. Love his voice & guitar, awesome!!
Love this version, it highlights the chorus much better than the original
I remember coming across this unplugged version when I was 13 and immediately fell in love with it. I think I had a VHS recording of it and couldn’t stop watching it! Brilliant version...brings back fond memories of my formative years.
Love this acoustic version of this song the audience just adds to the uniqueness of this being a live version of this song!!!!!!!
Apparently everyone's dad is the guy who goes "whoo!" in the solo.
Funny, since it was actually my dad. He went to this recording the day after he retired from Nintendo.
No, it was my Dad. He was actually invited to perform with Clapton but denied so that he wouldn't steal the spotlight. He actually taught Clapton that solo, and how to play the guitar!
No, guys, it was my dad. Jk. It was probably neither of your dads lol
Or, maybe it was both your dad and your actually long lost siblings
Actually, it was my dad. He was so excited after the concert he came home and beat me with jumper cables.
This is the very definition of real music. If you don't like this, you should just stop listening to music.
Tears in my eyes tell me this is the best version of this song.
The first had the genius of Duane Allman but this version is way more melodic and brings out more emotion and yes this is the best version imo.

Michelle L SORRY TO HEAR THAT. I STILL MISS MY FURRY SON JOSHUA WHO PASSED IN 2015, HAD HIM SINCE 2004.
This is the one song, only version that soothes me out of my worst rages and saddest despair.. This is THE music that soothes the savage beast..
As of today, this MTV Unplugged session remains the best-selling live album of all time...
Man 90s MTV Unplugged were out of this world
Eric Clapton ist ein Geschenk für alle die Musik lieben und genießen können. Er ist eine lebende Legende 🦊
You almost feel the air pulsating from the guitar , wow 👌
I love this version of Layla so much I learnt it on the guitar and almost play along to it every day since about 8 months ago, the solos never get boring !
This guy is the reason I first picked up a guitar 🍻
His note choices are always interesting
Same man! And that was 20 years ago for me :)
@@Crotes1990 nice!

Best version. The crowds cat calls are instantly recognizable.
I remember this exact recording was constantly played on the local radio station back when I started the fourth grade at a new school. It was a hard year for me but music, including this song, helped me cope.
I've been searching for this song for 6 years
One of the sickest songs of all time.
Heard it on the radio the other day. Loved it.
THIS will always and forever be my go-to version....
I truly remember the original (going back to when I first heard it in 1972) . Love it .THIS . WOWSER .incredible version
Cleanest guitarist on the planet...this man doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
The guitarist formerly know as god.
Absolutely love this! Much better than the original version.
My brother & I have had lots of fun bickering over which version of this song is the best. Of course its THIS one!
There needs to be a documentary on the guy who yelled "woo" in the solo. That was the most righteous woo ever yelled during a performance.
I LOVE this so much. I could listen to it all day. Why didn't he release a studio version of it?
Because I think about 15 years ago they didn't care about that .... Idk 🤷🏼♀️
best version , alot of emotion in this one
Thanks Preston. I think of you when I hear Eric Clapton. Person you got me through a broken time on my life. I forever grateful.
Preston, not person.
This song is so timeless..never gets old.
How could have I forgotten about this song? Ah brings back memories, bad ones are still better than none.
This is definitely the coolest version of this song.
i used to play this on the juke box over and over and over...you get the idea!

Sometimes I am embarrassed at how INTO THIS SONG I GET!! It's jazzy & soulful and I always end up head-banging
Ingrid Hanson hahaha same ;) nothing to be ashamed of
Head banging?
Ya boi I get what's she's saying. It's not like a metal head-banging, more like a heavy rhythmic nod, especially when Clapton's making that guitar cry.
i know this feel, can fking relate !!!
The "woooo" makes this even better!... Love this song.
THIS will always and forever be my go-to version....
Anyone else go "woooo!!" along with that one guy after the first chorus? I know I do...
This is the best version of this song
One of my favorite Eric Clapton songs, but I favor the electric guitar version. 2 yrs ago when my sister asked me for a name suggestion for her unborn girl, this was my first and only name suggestion. I LOVE this song.
I actually did name my daughter after this song, but this version was my favorite. This is the one I grew up with and I always play it on my acoustic.
I had 20 years when "unplugged" comes out. Great Album with the best Eric Clapton

Definitely the most definitive version of this brilliant song 😊
I like the electric version just fine but this one here just takes it to a whole different level!
2:57-3:35 Absolute genius, my all time favourite acoustic riff-
Years on, still WOW! ❤
Well this song is calm and chill and the original is angry asf Mr Clapton sure knows how to make songs great
Eric is tops. Another Icon.i
Love that he's not prejudice. Good man

I got into an argument with my history teacher yesterday about this version being better than the original.
+diabolicallink Errr just as good I would say. And that's saying a lot.
+diabolicallink The problem is they dropped the last (and best) 5 minutes of the song. Such a fantastic, epic piece of music. No reason they shouldn't have played it.
No Duane Allman on this one. That makes the original winner by default for my own tastes.
+diabolicallink The second movement of the original is probably the highlight for me! There's no dualling solos in this one also...
Omg lol
The awesome and very slick drumming of drumming legend Steve Ferrone..
Sounds mostly like a shuffle beat
By far the best version!...........Layla..............
Amazing how you can make the same song so different and so great at the same time...SKILLS.
I like both versions. So interesting how very different they sound.

J.A.Ratt85 totally agree
I love the electric version he really sings his heart out and the ending to it is just beautiful but I enjoy the unplugged version
I agree.....I grew up hearing the original version, but once I heard the acoustic version......I never looked back.....I totally groove on this version!!!
I read the story of Layla and Majnun and it was one of the best books I ever read. Persian stories are great I highly recommend it
Monti..I miss U..You introduced me this version...I used to listen to this song..
Well done. You said exactly what Eric said at the beginning of the track. Thumbs up.
