@@CultureSlice And aside from Bruce Willis, here's who else was considered for Mahoney: Bill Murray (busy with Ghostbusters) Rick Moranis (also busy with Ghostbusters) John Travolta Robin Williams Michael Keaton (signed on to do Johnny Dangerously) Judge Reinhold (chose to do Beverly Hills Cop) Billy Crystal Tom Hanks (turned down the part to do both Splash and Bachelor Party) Jerry Seinfeld (who also tried to audition for the role of Proctor... and failed) So, you think any of them would've been an equally good fit?
I always thought this was the nearest the US ever got to doing their own version of the Carry Ons. The first is very similar to the first films like Carry On Sergeant and Carry On Constable about a group of oddballs joining up and making a success against the odds.
When I was a kid, I won a police Academy toy police station at a carnival. It was two stories tall like a Barbie Dreamhouse, and had a jail cell and a few moving parts accessories. It was super cool because my brother and I could use it as an all purpose building for all of our Action figures that were around the size of a ninja turtle or he man figure.
Police Academy movies were pretty popular in my country thanks to the replays on the TV. I remember discussing the movies with my schoolmates in school in the early 2000’s. :D
just today i was watching the Its always sunny episode where Charlie gets more smarter and Frank invites Charlie to watch Police Academy. You have made an amazing job here bringing us all down memory lane and just a stellar writing and editing job, thank you for your work.
Oh wow thank you so much for your incredibly kind comment - really appreciate it. I love making these videos and have a lot of passion for the '80s and '90s pop culture. Very glad you enjoyed it, much more to come from the channel!
i think it was Sky one? that had the cartoon show on on a Saturday morning.... but yeah i use to love when one of the good police academy movies came on tv in the early 90s. Excellent video and production value on your wide too. :)
Amazing trip down memory lane and super slick editing. These movies have still got what it takes, almost 40 years on and yes, I will definately be watching the Police Academy box set again now, thanks for the memories @cultureslice
@@CultureSlice And it really showed up much Jake "The Snake" Roberts was a fallen hero at the time before Diamond Dallas Page saved him, as well as Mick Foley making the big mistake of having his wife and kids watch him get his brains scrambled by The Rock.
I remember watching the second movie on tv because it was on tv at the time and just fell in love with the series ever since. Yeah they aren’t Oscar winners but they always get a chuckle out of me especially when Bobcat Goldthwait joined the cast. Also my mom went to see the police academy stunt show at six flags Astroworld back in the late 90s but sadly by the time I went to visit the Park in the 2000s before it closed in 05 it had been removed from the park so I couldn’t see it.
I enjoyed all the Police Academy movies. They were live action versions of Looney Tunes style characters, even from the first film onwards. I wish the TV show and cartoons were released on DVD, I waited for Volume 2 of the cartoon, but it was never released. 😭 I even bought the "Twisted Sister: Come Out and Play" VHS just so I could see more Bobcat Goldthwait, in extra scenes that weren't in the music videos. I always loved that style of silliness.
Totally get what you're saying - even when the material wasn't great they had their charm for sure. Bobcat was a brilliant addition, him and Sweetchuck were so good together. It just felt like they had something quite special with the first couple of films, and given the talent in the cast overall it could have been more than it ended up being. Still quite fun to watch them to this day though!
@@CultureSlice If you get the chance, you might like the 1989 film "Transylvania Twist" its cartoonish, parody, with visual puns, with minimal story. But it's still my favorite movie. I like to think of Police Academy as being the "Get Smart" of the movie universe. Even if they added edge, and vulgar jokes to make them PG13, I don't think it would have helped. Much like the 2008 "Get Smart" film, which did pretty well. "Nude Bomb" tanked but it's still got charm and is a Get Smart movie, and even the remake 1995 TV show was enjoyable to watch to see Max and 99 once again. I'm even suggest "Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd: Out of Control", to someone if they like the TV show, even if they won't a fan of the other projects.
1984 was a great year for movies but somehow I missed this in theaters and only caught it on VHS but I had Police Academy mixed up with another police comedy that same year called Night Patrol which starred Linda Blair and the Unknown Comic, yeah younger generation might not have a clue who the Unknown Comic was.
i remember feeling like cinema simply couldn't replicate and harness the power of the sci-fi juggernaut if police academy was the best we could do. But DIE HARD changed everything
I used to love these movies ❤, used too is a bad way of putting it, I probably haven't rewatched them for about 8-10 years and I'm scared too much like a beloved video game from my childhood when I got to play it now as a middle aged man my memories are tainted as it doesn't hold up to modern games, so with this movie series I have that fear unlike movie franchises like Indiana Jones, back to the future or Ghostbusters I have a feeling the police academy films won't hold up do rather than taint my legacy memory I'll keep it like that by not rewatching, so glad u took me down memory lane and reminded the impact these movies had !!! ❤
Thank you so much for your comment - really appreciate it! I totally get what you're saying about not wanting to taint the memories, I've watched bits and pieces of them on TV over the years but I felt similar to you sitting down to watch all seven of them again for these videos. Honestly I thought the first one was still pretty great, and the second one was pretty good too, then even when it felt like they were going downhill a bit there were still either occasional great moments or they were simply carried by quality actors. Bobcat Goldthwait, GW Bailey and George Gaynes in particular are brilliant, even when the material isn't quite as good. Totally makes sense to want to keep the memory alive by not watching them again though! Thanks again. 👍
Thank you for subscribing Darryl, glad you enjoyed the videos and really appreciate it! The next one will be going live soon, and there’s lots more to come from the channel this year.
I've watched the first 3 for the first time and enjoyed them. I haven't seen the rest yet, but I have came to the conclusion: That the first one is probably the best one out of the bunch. Can't wait to see the rest tho.
The first one I would say is definitely the best, I think it holds up really well still today. Each of the latter ones is definitely worth watching, even if some of the material isn't always brilliant there are some great characters and the nostalgic vibes are enjoyable too. Enjoy the rest of the series!
My ex gf said its a tradition to watch Police Academy movies in Korea for Thanksgiving. Or Chuseok as the holiday is called over there. Her brother is a Ninja... I mean a police officer so maybe it was just her family. She also called her father Hitler
@CultureSlice That's what she said. I couldn't believe it myself. Never made it to Korea but I spent many nights at her apartment learning all about it 😀
The first Police Academy film's plot showed just because someone doesn't match up to other people's standards, it doesn't mean they can't be a hero.
Definitely - it was a really positive story!

Yeah they always seemed to be on the TV when I was younger - for some reason Police Academy 4 was a particular favourite of UK channels!

Amazing work! Keep it up! Cant wait for Part Two 👍😎🎉
Thank you Michelle - part two currently in production 👍🏻

Me: Heh, they won't mention "Beyond The Mat"

😂 Glad to offer you that moment! Beyond the Mat is so awesome, really should be held up with more esteem outside of wrestling fans than it is.

There is still a Police Academy stunt show at a theme park in Madrid if you ever fancy a trip to Spain!
