Royal Persia: Shah of Iran Interview on Democracy and Development (1960) | ITN Roving Report

  • On this day in 1980, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, died aged 60. He had been diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia in 1976, though remarkably this was kept from him until 1978. Dethroned and forced into exile by the Iranian Revolution some 18 months before his death, the Shah had sought refuge and medical treatment in the Bahamas, Mexico, the United States, Panama, and Morocco, before finally ending up in Egypt. There, the Shah developed an infection following an operation to remove his spleen, causing him to fall into a coma from which he did not recover. Under his Cairo hospital bed was a bag of Iranian soil.
On 22 June 1960, ITN’s Tim Brinton travelled to Iran to interview the Shah and his new Queen, Empress Farah Pahlavi (née Diba), whom the Shah had married the previous year. Prominent in Brinton’s special report as well as his interview with the Shah is the theme of security. The Shah survived an assassination attempt in 1949, Brinton recounts. And in 1953, amidst the chaos of a royalist coup d’etat against nationalist prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh organised by MI6 and the CIA, the Shah fled the country fearing for his life before returning days later following the coup’s success. Brinton references the “Mossadegh crisis” a number of times in his report. “Do you feel impelled to take any special precautions towards your personal safety?”, asks Brinton. “They want me to but I don’t know how,” replies the Shah. In fact, three years before this interview, the Shah had been assisted by the CIA in setting up SAVAK, the feared secret police apparatus that would over the years see thousands of Iranian citizens imprisoned and tortured. In the gardens of his palace, the Shah also discussed Iran's ongoing programme of economic development, speaking proudly of Iran's openness to foreign guidance and investment, and promised that Iran's upcoming elections would be as free and fair as any in the West.

King of Iran, an intelligent leader? Strong? Are you talking about Mohammed Reza Pahlavi? The "Shah" was such a pathetic and scared man, that his sister Ashraf was paid by the British to convince the Shah to sign the decree to overthrow Mosaddegh. The Shah was a little twit, don't forget who your royal majesty took his orders from. The Shah who was placed in power by the British and the CIA after overthrowing Mosaddegh in the coup of 1953 was a stooge taking orders from the US, Britain and Israel. Iran under the Shah, was not even able to keep an accounting of its sale of petroleum. The Shah could do nothing of significance in world affairs, without first asking his handlers for permission.

Your "king" was a coward put into power by the British. He fled Iran twice, once after Mosaddegh survived his attempted coup, he fled to Rome. His bosses in Britain coaxed him back to Iran. He then fled Iran in 1979. What kind of "king" flees a country when he is challenged? He was not even allowed by the British and the US to keep an accounting of the oil revenues he allowed them to steal from Iran. He was a stooge who allowed US soldiers into Iran's sovereign land. What kind of "king" allow foreigners to put him in power and to preserve his rule. He allowed the CIA and Mossad free reign to control SAVAK. Your "king" was a stooge!

It depends on what perspective you look at. At that time, Iran was secular, social freedom was religious, and the economy was better than now, because it had close relations with the outside world, especially the West, but regarding freedom of expression, at that time, freedom of expression unfortunately did not exist and was limited. but in general the situation was better than now

It happened for a reason, generally a ungrateful population. A distant administration. Foreign intervention.
      Holier than thou attitude
      High horse mentality
      Delusions of grandeur.
Iran was a 3 rate country living in the fictitious "glory" of 2500 years ago , so it didn't understand that the past is gone and they need a new mission plan .
But since you guys don't learn you tried to "revive " the glories of yesteryear and the vast majority of the population backed that misguided daydream.
Now you reap what you sow.
FYI both Italy and Greece were super powers 2000 years ago, but they have accepted their much reduced modern day role in this new world . Iran hasn't and doesn't want to learn so it will keep repeating the same mistakes .

At 1:18, you can nearly see two statues of the Jâvedân ("Immortals") at the entrance of the Imperial Guard's barracks. Jâvedân was the elite force from the Persian Empire during the Antiquity period which always numbered 10000 members. Each dead, sick or wounded member was always replaced, which explains the so-called title of "immortal".

Shah might have been an American tout, but, he also immensely contributed to Iranian economic and military development. Iran, equipment-wise, had the best-armed airforce in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, arguably, better compared to Turkish and IDF Air Forces.
Also, the Iranian Navy had the largest fleet of hovercraft vessels.
Iranian economic growth rates during the 1970s went bonkers reaching astronomical figures in real GNP growth rate terms at market prices. Iranian large cities were the commercial equivalent of many Western capitals and cities. It was a period of economic boom.
Where Shah made a mistake was that his economic model left behind the poorest of the poor.
Shah Reza did distribute land deeds under the banner of the White Revolution, but, that did not change the rural sense of alienation which later was well exploited by Mullahs.
Also, the party thrown to celebrate the Pahlavi Dynasty and King Cyrus the Great's legacy was a total disaster.
According to some unquoted figures, the entire budget of Switzerland was spent on setting up an artificial city in the Middle of the Desert City of Persepolis and the wines, and foods were flown in along with the Chefs from the Maxim restaurant in Paris, which led to irrational exuberance on part of the royal family, which became the basis of the Islamic Revolution and his ultimate toppling in 1979.

The Shah's military may have been big, but none of that large military was built in Iran. Iran during that time could not produce a single item that was worth praising. The Shah paid out massive amounts of money to American, European and Israeli arms manufacturers, but was not sophisticated enough to produce and manage any of it without the active management of foreigners. It is so shameful that the land of the Great Iranian Nation during the reign of that stooge, the Shah allowed foreign soldiers to travel within its borders as if though they owned Iran. Never again should a foreign soldier step foot within the borders of Iran. Iran's economy at that time was an unsophisticated single product economy only exporting unrefined petroleum. For anyone to be proud of the Shah and Iran at that time, which during his reign was more dependent on foreigners than anytime in its history, is shameful.
