Kuru Toga Smart Jacket Review - Metal Upgrade For Kuru Toga

The Smart-Jacket is an aluminum shell that goes around the standard Uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencil ( amzn.to/2SXRy5D ) body. It makes the pencils wider, heavier, tougher, and cooler looking. But is it worth $20?

While I find this particular accessory to have a more "masculine" look, I absolutely love the idea of it! I'm hoping this is the start of a trend which I believe has every chance at becoming popular... outer pen/pencil shells made of plastic/metal in different styles and colors. To buy your cheap stic pens (which many find adequate), for instance, and having the option of purchasing an outer shell more to one's liking has a chance of winning many over. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem doling out $20 for something that's (1) visually pleasing, (2) useful for everyday, and (3) equipped to stand up well to time. Great concept!

I can see this coming from Japan. Totally mecha and quite unnecessary.... but very cool-looking. They could really target a particular demographic and if they would come out with some strategic color accents like a fighter from Macross, I could see it really taking off. Regardless, It's worth $20 for me and I can't wait to get my hands on one-- a few if there are several colors. I'd regret it later if I didn't.

It's a cool idea, I have the Pentel Graphgear 1000 and still prefer that to using the Kuru Toga. 💯

Thanks for the excellent review. Makes the Kuru look like it’s on steroids! Got to say though, for that price, I could purchase another high-end mechanical pencil such as the Pro Use or Super Promecha. And, they already come with a full metal jacket.

I read somewhere that it fits the kurutoga advance upgrade as well which would get you the metal clip and metal tip that you mentioned in the video

Thanks for reviewing this! How do you like it compared to the KT Roulette model? Is the Advance model's slide pipe big enough of a benefit to go for the Smart Jacket? I've also seen the version for the DelGuard, which probably goes up against the Type Lx for a lower weighted feel, but I'm wondering about the much thicker grip in my hands…

Nifty but Kuru Toga are moving the metal direction now in 2020 so may defeat the purpose of this. There is the new Kuru Toga Advance Upgrades that just dropped in January in Japan (I have one in the mail ATM to here in the US) that are metal at the grip apparently.

While I love a knurled metal grip, I can get that on the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 or even the Zebra M-701 for a lot less. More than anything, I think this product speaks to the fact that Uni needs to just make an all-metal Kuru Toga already!

@@unsharpen Yep, the Roulette grip is great, especially for about 12 bucks. If they made the upper barrel metal, I'm sure people would be happy to pay $20 for it. But I don't think I would want to pay that much alone for an accessory that made the Kuru Toga almost as chubby as a Dr. Grip. 🤔

I mean, it just doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. Doesn't address the few problems the Kuru Toga actually has, like the useless eraser, and the Roulette basically has the same look but actually machined so you don't get the bulk of a sleeve over the original body.

Sal my first kuru toga was my last. The amazing mechanism didn't even work for me. I am very bitter about this pencil. I tried every angle, a bunch of different leads, etc. doesn't work.
