  • I've been using both these heads for several years and while they are both great heads they also both have some unique characteristics that I think are worth diving into. Whether you are looking for a quality budget head or the ultimate lightweight solution for the backcountry these heads are worth a look.

Another really helpful video. Getting into mountain hunting is a steep learning curve. Really appreciate the non-biased (i.e. sponsorship) advice.

Thank You! This comparison review has been needed for a few years.
I feel like your "style" of glassing is what is generally taught by the hunting industry, and is probably the best practice. If you have no experience with fluid heads, adopting the Outdoorsman to glass this method will be seamless and enjoyable.
I come from a film background and have a lot of fluid head experience. While I know the Outdoorsman is better suited for grid-style glassing, I'm so comfortable with a fluid head that it really makes it a true toss up.
Thanks again for the great comparison.

I definitely agree. And for the price the Sirui is impossible to beat for a fluid head.

I have owned both. I upgraded to thenoutdoorsmans fluid head. They make the best quality gear for glassing. Great review and insights. If had to go with one it would be the outdoorsman’s pan head

I have not used anything but the VX5 but I love it. works amazing on my Swaro 85mm and my Els and for the money idk what would even come close to the quality. Great videos keep it up. Thanks

Nice review. I would like to see you use and compare to, Wiser PH-170 NightHawk Ultralight Pan Head.

Can you do an updated video on the new Sirui VA-5X fluid head? Any initial thoughts from first glance?

love the video. Have you ever had to do any maintenance and or clean out/ take apart either tripod head to restore the performance? Example: have you experienced any grittiness, or dust build up inside the heads over time?

Great question. A few times I've got some grit in the outdoorsmans and it just seems to eventually work its way out through normal use. I have definitely been tougher on that on as compared to the Sirui as it tends to be my truck head. I've never had to take either of them apart.

I have looked around for this specific comparison for some time so it was finally nice to see one! Jay do you have any thoughts on the pros and cons of the long handle of the heads? It seems cumbersome at first but not sure if it's a problem then when glassing rather than hiking around. (i.e. getting caught on things, dinged up, awkward to pack etc.. is it better to have a long handle? Currently researching for my first panhead so no hands on experience here.

The handle folds down flat against the tripod on both pretty easily. The only pain is that with binos you need to rotate the handle to the front on the outdoorsmans. Not really a big deal though you literally just spin the pan head 180*. And both are removeable so you could easily replace with a short slim tube of some kind if you wanted to.
