  • First time listening to NF and starting with the song "Hope". Like all my first reactions, I did no research going into this and I know I missed so much! While editing the video I started to pick up things like maybe the character dressed in all black is symbolic of the part of him who has carried the 30 years of "hate, of broken, of shame". These are things I just don't pick up on right away. Let me know what else I missed!
    Check out the original:

You're right :) at the start Hope and Fear argue over who owns the album ("it's my album, my album, no it's my album") and the dark character Fear tries to point him in the wrong direction, back to where he began, going in circles and laughs at the white NF for buying into Fear again. White NF carries "a map to hope" and Fear does not like it when White NF turns his back on him and tries to find hope instead of staying with Fear. So he pushes him back into his "mansion" (the mansion is his head, where he used to be trapped in his own thoughts and fears).

🎶 This is for anyone new who may want to take the NF journey as we call it because he intertwines his music like marvel movies. All of his albums are like a connected series.
He also hides eggs in his videos which he co-directs and co-produces.
For example in his “When I Grow Up” song there were four hidden eggs in that song: 1. A black balloon by the trash cans (black balloon represents his burdens per search single) 2 In the burger joint he grabbed at receipt that had the date and time of when his song time was being released. 3. He had outcast written on his name tag in the janitor scene which references his Outcast song. 4. He had his moments album CD in car scene
Another example is in the search song he had cage in background he rapped in from his outcast song. Search single also connects to Hope. In Hope he has the “map to hope”.
The black smile you will see painted on his mouth is explained in his therapy session song.

It is a big deal that he says "Mama, I forgive you." It is better to listen to/view How Could You Leave Us? to understand; it will explain. Don't listen to Mama until after How Could You Leave Us?
      .
He has an early song called Mansion in which he describes his mind as a house he has built to protect himself from the traumas he had as a child. The biggest one mentioned there is a severe beating (at least one) from his mother's boyfriend. His parents had been married, but they divorced and she got primary custody, even though she was a pill addict. I have heard his father was an alcoholic - and I think it must be so for a pill addict to get primary custody over him, unless that was simply due to courts' bias in favor of mothers particularly where young children are concerned. the father got sober, and as soon as he learned of the beating (one of NF 's(Nate Feuerstein) sisters was similarly beaten), he and NF's grandparents stepped in.
The song you hear in Hope when he falls into the Mansion is from Mansion and is sung by Fleurie, a singer who often works with NF's producer, Tommee Proffitt.
In Mansion he also describes 2 characters within him called Fear and Regret. It is unclear how much those are just symbolic and how much NF actually sees them, characters in his own mind he created to cope with the traumas. He also often speaks to 'Nate', which is his young self - it is as thoroughly third-personed as Fear and Regret are, though they are all a part of NF.
The old man in the cage is, as I understand it, NF in the future, as mentioned in Let You Down. I listened to that song but did not entirely follow the plot. I think it is NF reflecting on his potential future if he does not deal with his emotional damage. The old man in the cage is shown holding the keys to the cage but he still has not let himself out. I think NF is saying that he will have let his future self down if he does not find a way to release the inner demons to set himself free.
You may have noticed that the old man had a painted on black 'smile' which the NF in white clothes is occasionally seen wearing in this video as he argues with himself. He is also seen with it in other videos. I am not entirely sure of the significance of it, but for now I take it to be a symbol of how he has to present a false face of coping much of the time when inside he is in turmoil.
He is very explicit in Hope that it is having a child (there is a second now) which has done so much to pull him out of his emotional issues. Happy is about learning to break generational habits and traumas, though the protagonist in the video is a young woman since he could not very well put himself there as the story of the video plays out, given the events of How Could You Leave Us? However, he also credits having a breakdown which caused him to get professional treatment a few years ago. Personally, I think simply putting some years between himself and the horrific events of his youth has helped a lot as well: simply having other things in your life and memories than the crap can help a lot.
Though his father extricated NF from the situation at the mother's house, it was NF's grandparents that did most of the child-rearing. They were very religious. NF embraced the church very much and is openly a Christian. For instance, Happy is in the form of a prayer confessing sins of holding onto bad, hurtful behaviors and asking for help to break free. He originally was categorized as a Christian Rapper, not least because his first label was a Christian publisher. However, he has insisted he is instead a Christian who raps. So much of "Christian Rap" is liturgical songs, praise songs, scripture songs, etc., but NF is most known for his stunning, insightful and unsparing lyrics about the traumas and emotional pain. There is no 'kum-ba-yah' feelgoodness to his works - they are painful and cathartic. He describes frequently about how he went into music as a way to deal with his pain, to speak with those he otherwise could not, to address his issues. People who also have emotional issues often find it helpful to have these issues addressed so openly and clearly, and in that regard, NF's work is a ministry to the afflicted, in a way that someone who has not lived it could not. I have probably seen 100 or more people posting comments about how they were able to kick addictions or maintain their sobriety as a result of How Could You Leave Us? (other songs help as well, but that one is the biggest kick in the butt you can experience).

Here’s a backstory on NF to have this make more sense. NF grew up with divorced parents, his mom eventually dying to a drug addiction. He was also abused as a child. His music is mainly about controlling all the anger tension, and strong emotions built up throughout his life of trauma. The version of NF in black is called “Fear” which is all of NF’s bad emotions and traumas that he wants to leave. The whole song is about becoming a new version and leaving behind Fear. The part where Fear pushes NF into a mansion is a callback to one of his old songs called Mansion, where NF describes his mind to be a mansion with each room being a new trauma/bad emotions. Right as NF is about to metaphorically “leave the mansion”, Fear pushes him back into it, as he doesn’t want NF to leave him behind. They also argue over whose album it is because NF wanted to create this new album without Fear along with him, but Fear is once again clinging on and not leaving. At the end of the song, NF and Fear are taking all their tension and NF is saying that for 30 years, Fear has been doing all the bad things, and it’s time for them to part ways, and Fear is once again fighting back to stay with NF. Eventually NF declares that he’s “taking the reins” meaning that he’s finally leaving Fear behind. Hope this helped clear some stuff up. You should totally listen to more NF!!!

I agree with the previous comments especially the one with the condensed journey recommendation! If you like the condensed journey, you can go back and do the longer journey if you love NF like most people do!!
One little nugget from Hope. The beginning part is Hope personified talking to his old self! Then at the end of the song, Nate’s personification of Hope declares, “I’m taking the reins!”

There's nothing wrong with starting with Hope :) It gives a great insight into his lyrical themes, his video styles and his symbolism. You already picked up that you missed stuff, good! But you can go back and re-react to this one when you've taken the "NF journey" 😁
Typically he talks to himself in the songs. He has characters in himself like Fear, Pride, Hope that banter and argue with each other.

start with "Clouds the Mixtape" get a feel for his style. Then visit his first album "Mansion", afterward the "Therapy Session" album and the Perception album, once you finish those two move onto "The Search" album and finally his most recent and in my opinion his best album "Hope". I have been following Nate since 2013... for further context i was in 1st grade and I've grown up with his music.. I turn 18 this year

Looks like your a new channel on that grind. I suggest going through Bo Burnhams catalog of comedy songs. They are a big hit on react channels. Some of my favorite's of his are "From God's Perspective", "Welcome to the Internet", and "All eyes on me". Though I do suggest just starting with his earlier content and seeing how transforms as an artist since he was just making songs in his room as a kid.

Just a tip. After your pause, rewind back 5 seconds because sometimes you'll miss a beat drop, flow switch, beat change, or a cue.

Unfortunately you have definitely come in to the NF journey towards the very end of his discography. NF is definitely worth the trip down the rabbit hole starting with intro. I'm sure they'll be others to comment and give you the whole timeline but you definitely should take the journey and as you go through the journey everything will piece together. NF through each album literally walk through this life. He's amazing and ridiculously talented not just wrapping but his vocals and singing as well. I hope you enjoy the journey and I hope you go down the rabbit hole. I enjoy your reaction keep up the good work.

this was a great reaction however you did miss a lot in this video simply because all of NF video's and albums connect together to tell a story like others has said in the comments. Your really have to start from the very beginning to truly appreciate the video you just did a reaction to. most of us call this the NF journey and its a very deep and powerful one, you talk about music not having meaning and soul behind it and not actually having a message to it. Every single song has a meaning every single song you will be able to relate to in someway. NF has saved so many people's lives with is music myself included. I honestly believe he is one of the greatest artist of our generation along with REN as well. anyhow do yourself a favor and go start from the very beginning at Intro and just go in order. going in order is key. keep up the great reactions and I look forward to watching the next NF reaction.

With NF, when you pause, you gotta go back a few seconds before you start it back, or you will miss things. I'd start with Intro.

Hi dude, great reaction, Hope is like the climax of NF, it’s his lead single from his fifth album which sums up a journey of the four previous albums and a mixtape. You should follow the NF journey if you’re interested in the story and in my opinion even do a second reaction to hope when you get back to it to see what you didn’t catch in this one and all of the pieces would come together, this is a playlist I found of the NF journey and it looks pretty solid, but a bit long, you can look for more concise playlists but the more you’ll hear the more you’ll appreciate the full story

I know nothing about NF other than his name is Nate abd he tends towsrd Christian themes and he doesnt swear. Ren wentbto one of his concerts in Calgary and really liked him. Jointdake records did a remix using this NF music with Ren explaining Hi Ren over the top. I have listened to it over and over again. It grounds me. Ill get the link. Would love for you to experience it .

Very little Christian themes in his music actually (if there were lots I would not enjoy it, and I adore NF). His albums are mostly about his own mental health and abuse in his childhood. Very straight forward and vulnerable lyrics. Makes me cry like no other.
