Great video mark, i think i will have to re look at my stones now, would like that first stone , a few questions. 1/ Do you look at the rocks when you first pick them from supplier, 2/ Is there a certain size rocks you start with for the pond size and 3/ Would you ever break up a stone to fit or change a feature
Getting set to build short waterfall. It would be nice for a specific video on design with smaller stones as mine is a one man build and I can only manipulate boulders of 35-50 pounds at best. Love the videos.

Do u start by using some sort of base for the waterfall rocks? Like maybe cinder blocks for a base so u don't have to use as many good rocks for the build up

Hi im planning to build a pond on my back yard. I dont know how to figure out the size for pond liner for the pond. Could you please tell me how we can figure out the size of sheet needed for a pond
Hi Mark, What sorts of rock compositions are ok to use in building ponds? I have heard all sorts of opinions on this some based on composition and others based on hardness and shape. I have heard limestone is bad as it changes the pH (but seen people use it), sandstone is bad as it is too soft (but sandstone with more quartz is much harder but I have not seen any ponds built from it, I mentioned sandstone because is the most available rock in our area), don't use rocks that can leech chemicals into the water (I heard this about ironstone as well as other igneous rocks but seen it used), common river stone (you call glacial stone) is very round and is not common in most builds except near the bottoms where it isn't visible and seem aesthetically to be a bad choice, and a few old builds using stacked slate or flagstone is now uncommon. I guess do you have any pointers on how a DIYer can go out and source and select good rocks for a pond build and make sure the selection is ok for a pond with fish (might be different here in Australia than UK but I am sure some tips still apply)?

the only thing that i can see wrong with that interpri is with how interesting a rock is if you fall on to it if you look every cutting edge this rock has can and will at one time maintaining the pond come back to get you but you are right far more interesting edge on or is it natural how a rock tips slides and falls into a hollow
Thanks for your feedback, depends on the rock type and how it’s harvest. Millions of years old. The edges of this rock are angular but not sharp. We do cover the liner with an over liner so the angles will not cut the liner. Human skin is just like rubber if you were to twist or drop a stone on the bare liner yes it would damage the liner for sure. If someone was to fall on the rock and twist it would damage the skin yes
Thanks for your feedback, soft landscaping was not really planned on this one but once the plants grow in it will be much better, like all waterfalls they are all based on rock and the plants grow in over time.

i do not do a lot of small budget stuff any more, i love my art, when i was 11 I was all over that paper rounds to fund my addiction

My 6 biggest rocks got lost, so I put them on top of other rocks and some of them I put on their side to make them look bigger !

1 yes we hand pick from our own rock piles, 2 bigger is better, but interesting all the same, i break up stone on most projects

we use aqua blocks sometimes in the builds, never cinder blocks or concrete, we dig out the benches for the size of the waterfall rocks

you want weathered limestone! (nothing coming out the ground), fish safe stone is key we use only three or four types of stone
Never underestimate the importance of being physically able to move a rock during rock selection.

You can run the return pipe through a bulk head and then hide it with a waterfall

Refund? We use the stone on site once we take the stone in to a garden it stays in the garden as our cropping stones
