Is this Victoria's BEST spot to see WILDLIFE??

In this episode, we visit Mallacoota in far east Gippsland. Mallacoota is such a beautiful coastal town but it did suffer significantly after the Black Summer bushfires in 2020. Labelled as the 'worst bushfire in our history', it has taken years for the bushland and wildlife to recover. So you can imagine how happy we were to see so many birds and animals on this trip! And the Spring wildflowers were just amazing!!
We take you to see the Gippsland Water Dragons sunning themselves on warm boulders. It had been decades since visiting this location and Karen was pretty excited to see that the Water Dragons still lived in the area, particularly after the bushfires.
We visit Shipwreck Creek to see the stunning (and usually very elusive) Southern Emu-wren. The heathland in this area was blooming with stunning wildflowers! Blue, pink, purple, yellows… just amazing!! We would have been happy just seeing the flowers but we were even happier when an Emu-wren popped out of the flowers and put on quite a display jumping from stick to stick.
Next was Double Creek bushwalk. We saw some gorgeous birds and some very cute little lizards… but the highlight was our encounter with a Red-Bellied Black Snake who was having a snooze in the sun by the walking track. We’re very careful on our walks so when we see a snake, we don’t bother them. We just stop and admire until they decide to move on.
We saw so much on this trip to Mallacoota that we have split the video into two halves. So, join us next Saturday for the last instalment of fun & adventure as we bring you more fascinating and amazing creatures we encounter!

Nothing like a bit of herping along with our birding!

Gotta love those herps! 😀 I was so looking forward to going back to see my little reptile friends on our recent East Gippsland trip... and I wasn't disappointed! 😃 (that video will be out in the next series) ~ Karen

The bushfires are terrifying and I always think of the beautiful wildlife. I am so pleased to see that Mallacoota has revived and that you found your water dragons. Lovely red-bellied black snake just doing his (her?) thing. Love your work. 💛💚💙

Thanks! 🙂 We weren't sure how Mallacoota was going to look after the bushfires but it has bounced back really well. I was so excited to see the Water Dragons! I hadn't been to that spot for over 20 years and finding the turn off was a case of driving up & down the highway over & over trying to find it 🤣 haha! Totally worth it though! And wasn't the snake amazing!! Such a pretty colour!

Thanks so much!! 🙂 We were so lucky!! The afternoon was really still & overcast so it was comfortable and quiet. We could hear the birds but they weren't popping up.... until that one little guy decided to jump up & bounce around up high in the dead branches. I still can't believe we saw one! Such a highlight! 😊

Thanks Bernie! Yes, the plants have recovered really well... and the wildlife is fantastic! I would think the mild weather & all that rain has helped over the last few years but it was really amazing! Great place to visit for sure!!

I know I'm in a minority but i really enjoy your videos and the way you focus on all the wildlife in the area your in. Please keep them that way and leave the tech reports to the photographers who do them now.
Excellent video and loved the reptiles especially the snake. Beautiful marking with the red and black!

Thanks so much!! ❤ I can honestly say that we'll leave all the tech reviews to all the other TH-camrs 🤣 We have far more fun getting out & about seeing wildlife in beautiful locations than rambling on about stuff we know nothing about 🙂

@@srilankanwhistlingthrush2006 If I would pick 5 varied towns to stay & see interesting birds, I'd say: 1. Glenrowan 2. Sea Lake 3. Bright 4. Aireys Inlet 5. Mallacoota
