    i agree on your statements about black/poc authors who write white love interests. i believe i saw someone mention that black/poc authors are encouraged by publishing houses to make their love interests white so their books can be more palatable which pisses me off so much. it reinforces the idea that white people are inherently more appealing/deserving of love than black/poc.

    THANK YOU!!! Can’t enjoy black queer stories because the love interest is always white. Like Erin from Booked and Busy talked about this, I have yet to read a good black sapphic romance.

      “The stars and the blackness between them” is one of my favourite queer YA books

      Especially on TV, its sooooooo annoying. I actually celebrated when a show I was watching had a black lesbian woman meet up with her lesbian couple friends and both of them were brown skinned black women

    I’m currently reading Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute. I was just thinking where the hell were these books when I was a kid. As a kid my favorite genre was historical fiction because those were the only books with black kids 🤦🏾‍♀️ I am low key jealous of all the books available now but also super happy for todays ya.🥰 It definitely makes a difference.

    We need black new adult. Honey and spice showed this. I loved the attractions and distractions series by Alexandra warren too. And young black and gifted and snowflake by Nia forester

    I promised myself that the only books id buy this year would be the lily reads book club but i have been living for black YA romances like they actually have a storyline cause they don't rely on the smut... So i will be getting my hands on a couple of these

    Definitely will check out the first book--I really fell for "Charming as a Verb" and "Alleged Good Girl" so I'm here for whatever you rec that highly! I hope no one comes at you for your POV on Black love interests because the whole white love interest thing is a problem (seems like especially the guys, for some reason, straight or gay). I'm wracking my brain to think of an interracial YA romance where the male half is Black and coming up depressingly blank. Well... I know an indie fantasy like that, but you were rightly talking about trad publishing, which is always slower to wake the fuck up to the 21st century.
    (Aside: your skin looked luminous in the skincare routine! Serious envy.)

    KENYA! I love these reading vlogs. I'm definitely interested in reading 16 & pregnant after your review of it. I really like With the Fire On High because of the teen mom representation and the importance of having a community when raising a child, in every case! Also, I agree with black authors writing black love interests! These stories are unfortunately rare. The YA books that get the most publicity are usually ones with a white main character. Black people dating people of color is the norm and has been for a long time and we need to see that more in books. Aaron from Booked and Busy discussed this a while ago. Remembering Kenya's rant about how YA needed to be dedunded and seeing her now pleading for more people to read YA cracks me up. Big 'never let them know your next move' energy. I get it though. Back then YA was just synonym of the same story with the same hwite characters blandy revisited by different authors

    Random but I’m loving the colors in the as you walk on by cover. I kept getting peaks of the hardcover and it looks so pretty from here.
    Anyway, yea I don’t want to read books with a YT love interest. It’s not for me. I want all BIPOC all the time. I don’t even read that many YT authors to be honest with you. That 16 & pregnant books sound right up my alley.

    the thing about most queer books having to have white love interest without fail clock their tea!!!!!

  • @viscorner4
    @viscorner4 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be honest, I'm not one to gravitate towards stories of black trauma or black struggles but I don't write them off. I'd read them if recommended but I don't seek them. I don't know for everyone else but my problem is not so much that I th9nk black people who don't fit respectability politics don't deserve representation. But the stories they are usually uplifted almost always revolves around black people suffering and being miserable because they're black and it's so hard. I get that this narrative is important and need to be told. But there's not enough balance. There's not enough books pushed to the front about black prople just doing stuff and riding dragons and being joyful and being in love and going on adventures and going through struggles not because they are black but just because life be hard and it gets depressing sometimes. Those are the stories I seek above all. It feels very voyeuristic the way prople only care about black stories when they are being stripped naked, all scars and wounds exposed. I want that, but I also want more. And I want authors to freely write about all facettes of blackness and still be successful, supported and promoted

    Oh sorry to double post, but I meant to ask... so this new "Spice Road" book. Is "Whoever controls the spice controls the Kingdom at large" its tag line for real?! Damn, that's some bald-face cribbing from "Dune." (Famously, "He who controls the spice controls the universe.") Surprised the publisher would be that blatant just changing up a few of the nouns. Maybe I'll write an epic fantasy and advertise it as “Two Rings to lead them all, Two Rings to find them, Two Ring to catch them all. and in the nighttime bind them."
