    The new Gel 160 is here... But is it worth it?
    In this video I review Maurten's Gel 160, their new product. This is a similar product to their Gel 100, which I have previously reviewed.
    Maurten sports nutrition is used by amateur athletes as well as elites, such as Eliud Kipchoge, Kristian Blummenfelt, Tigst Assefa, Lucy Charles-Barclay and Gustav Iden.
    They clearly have a fantastic reputation, but do their products live up to the hype?
    If you're wondering whether Maurten Gels are worth it, or whether you should used Maurten products, then hopefully this video will help you decide!

    What are your thoughts on Maurten's products? Are you a fan?

    An awesome gel (and nutrition brand in general) is Nduranz, developed by Tim Podlogar (scientists of the bora cycling team). I would love to see one of your review of those

      Never heard of them, but they look interesting. Also got a large amount of sodium in them compared to the "super gels"
      I've listened to interviews with Dr Podlogar, and he seems to know his stuff!

      Great shout, thanks for highlighting these. Between the time of recording the video and releasing it, I saw a couple of athletes use them at Kona at the Ironman World Championship. Will definitely take a look at these, as it looks like they have a 40g gel too! Which works out as around £2.20 per gel, so same ball park as the rest

    Thanks a lot for this useful and relevant video. Do you think that it's risky to switch to Maurten Gel 160 as part of a marathon race after using the 100 version during the long runs ?

    • @NutritionTriathlon
      @NutritionTriathlon  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're welcome 🙂 it's probably fine. As it's the same gel just more of it, the only 2 problems I can see are 1) making sure you aren't suddenly consuming way more carbs 2) your stomach tolerates the bigger bolus

    Used Maurten gels for a marathon back in April and it went well compared to the gels I used previously (Torq/High 5) with importantly no stomach issues during the race. Not a massive fan of the taste and the gel thickness but seemed to have gone down much easier than other gels I used before. Bottom line is that I found them too expensive since you have to use them for racing and race prep. I'm a slow runner so don't think it is worth the investment .

      I think those are all fair points. I think the Maurten gels are really good, but I also agree that the cost is prohibitive for a lot of people and would put them off them!

    Have you ever looked at cranksports e-gel? Would love a review from you.

      Not properly, no. A few have mentioned them! Unfortunately I've got a bit of a backlog of reviews to do and so might not get round to this any time soon!

    I have been using GU Roctane Gel which contains Amino Acids (1425), Sodium (125), and Caffeine(35). I take one every 40minutes and alternate between caffeinated and non-caffeinated one. But these are difficult to ingest because of strong taste they leave. So recently I tried Maurten which are easy to ingest while running because of its texture and neutral taste. The question is if I alternate between Maurten GEL 100 CAF 100 and Maurten Gel 100 every 40minutes, do I need to take anything else other than plain water? They do not seem to contain Amino Acids and Potassium. Assume that I take one banana before the run. I am a 160lb, moderately sweating 50-year-old runner and usually need 4hr 30-45min for the full marathon in a temperature of 60 degrees F.

      Hey. The amino acids and potassium aren't really that helpful for marathon performance anyway, so it's fine not to have them.
      For me this would really just come down to feel and whether you've prehydrated well enough in the days/morning before you race. Just water might be ok, but personally I would be testing longer runs with and without something like a salt tablet and seeing how I feel. You might have some benefit from some sort of sodium intake before the end.

    I’m a big fan of gel products but these prices are ridiculous. £9.98 per 100g carb vs £2.96 for a “regular” gel. Not to mention making your own for a fraction of even that cost too. Maybe I’m a tight arse though 😅

    • @NutritionTriathlon
      @NutritionTriathlon  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha, no, I think unfortunately this is a very valid issue that lots of people find with Maurten stuff! It's just too expensive to use an everyday thing

    hi there, could you compare the components on each gel?

    • @NutritionTriathlon
      @NutritionTriathlon  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! They're exactly the same other than slightly larger carbohydrate quantities in the gel 160!

    Precision Hydration do a 90g carb gel. £15 for 3. Which obviously works out at £2.50 per 45g
    The price of Maurtens 160 is IMO prohibitive! And once I've finished my current box or Gel 100 I will probably be looking to the SIS Beta (non nootropic version) or the aforementioned PH90s for my next training cycle.
    Something else to bear in mind is that these "super gels" often lack electrolytes.
    I'm a relatively heavy sweater, so I believe I need to supplement with electrolytes in some capacity. But not sure if the best way is a salt stick tablet or a electrolyte gel every hour/90mins or so

    • @NutritionTriathlon
      @NutritionTriathlon  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good shout with PF+H, I didn't include them since they didn't have a standalone ~40g gel but you're right, you could easily just halve it and then it's the right sort of range.
      To be honest, none of the gels contain enough sodium to cover electrolyte needs and IME it's not worth trying to factor this in. Better to have a separate, specific hydration strategy and not include gels. I wouldn't knock any gel for not having a high sodium content because it's just not really that helpful, unless the aim is to try to balance tonicity - but that's another story!

      @@NutritionTriathlon one of the things I learnt the hard way at London marathon this year, is that 4 electrolyte drink stations on the whole course is not sufficient! They weren't even evenly spaced!
      It seems UK marathon organisers don't really think of hydration requirements beyond plain water!
      I'm going to try the salt tabs in the future.
