I personally like to think that Nyarlathotep is more ''down to earth'' than the other lovecraftian horrors. That perhaps his way of thinking, while still alien, is not entirely incomprehensible. I also think he is not all that powerful, by old one standards, but still incredibly dangerous. Because unlike most old ones that simply don't care about earth or are entirely unaware of it, Nyarlathotep is actively meddling with our affairs, purposefully seeding chaos.
Wikipedia says a lot; at best it's trying to make sense out of the madness of the broader lovecraftian fanfic universe and that frequently contradicts itself -- at worst it's Wikipedia and someone's talking out their butt. Try the Wikia not Wikipedia. It's still often wrong, but it's better and at least it's more entertainingly wrong. ;-) This video also said it was their opinion. Trying to dick measure the various gods is basically impossible. There's no basis for comparison, basically by design. He's definitely the one with the most power over humanity, but that's because he's the only one who *cares*. All the other gods barely notice us at all, and effect us like a shoe effects an ant not like how a six year old picks the legs off an ant under a magnifying glass. Lovecraft said he was a servant of Other/Outer Gods (and is linked to Azathoth meta-textually because of "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" being related to the abandoned "Azathoth" but that's not *textual* if I'm remembering that story right and I might not be... it's been a bit), and that's about the only canon we've got in what's otherwise as broad a fanfiction as Star Wars Legends canon. There's a few good theories on how he could be related to Azathoth, but they're all theories. Make your own headcanon; nobody can tell you you're wrong but you also cannot be correct and that's okay. The gods are beyond our comprehension as they should be. :-)

Way I see Nyarlathotep, he doesn't destroy humans because it would be far more entertaining to watch us destroy ourselves. He doesn't need to impersonate anyone-just a word here, a gentle nudging there, and humanity devolves into war. And the Crawling Chaos sits back and watches us destroy each other.
Is it fair to say that Nyarlathotep is basically the outer god equivalent of a kid dwelling in his mom’s basement, whose addicted to playing RTS or simulator games like “Rome Total War” and “Jurassic Park Operation Genesis”? Instead of manipulating virtual army soldiers into killing each other for entertainment or deliberately staging disasters in his newly built Jurassic Park (like activating a twister or freeing a T-Rex to munch on his hapless guests) for the “evulz”, however, Nyarlathotep has turned planet Earth and humanity itself into his own playground to toy with.
why destroy something completely half the fun is watching it rebuild just to cause it to happen again, if it was destroyed completely then they would have to find a new "toy" and that process would take a millennia or more when in the same or less time the old toy has grown and changed into something new to mess with in new and more sadistic ways.
He's more nuanced in terms of wanting to have fun with humans, but actually following the orders of his other Elder Gods to deliver their messages as his duty is. Loki is far simpler, messing with people to either entertsin or advance himself, wanting power mostly. Nyarlathotep does his job as messenger of the gods and spends his downtime messing with people and watching chaos in general happen. Interestingly, he's both more and less driven than Loki is in some capacity.
@@UmbrellaSound Sure, but that's like saying that Ares and Athene are essentially the same gods because by title, both are gods of war. It ignores, among other things, the very simple fact that Ares is a slaughtering sadist who fights brutal battles for fun, whereas Athene is more compassionate, using strategy and intelligence to aid in the reduction of casualties. Saying that Nyarlathotep is like Loki generalizes things far too much. Loki is a trickster by trade. He was a wimp in combat, at least compared to his arch nemesis, Thor, and so he uses trickery, illusions and misdirection to help achieve his goals instead of brute force. He doesn't just use chaos for fun, he needs it to survive. His conniving and tricky nature is because he can't fight otherwise, his chaotic strategies are by necessity. Nyarlathotep could walk up to Thor, bitch-slap him to initiate conflict and kill him with that very same bitch-slap. He's a trickster by choice, as he has more than enough power to enslave all of humanity with illusions, magical brainwashing, promises of happiness or by simply showcasing his incredible power and subjugating people through brute strength. But he doesn't. He finds it more fun to just mess with people and drop them into the depths of insanity or cause turmoil amongst people and observe the happenings. If you really want to compare them, Loki is a political machinator, who is too weak to really stand on his own strength so he has to use clandestine tactics to get his way. Nyarlathotep meanwhile is like a dictator who has ultimate power but keeps it a secret and tells his citizens that the Council decide everything. Then proceeds to warn his citizens of a mysterious terrorist and give randomized descriptions of the suspect, so he can munch popcorn and observe as his citizens kill each other out of paranoia.
@@kenthefele113 I believe it's the "Other Gods" that Nyarlathotep is the collective mind and soul of - those "Other Gods" being the infinite nameless flutists and drummers that keep Azathoth asleep. My headcanon is that in order to amuse themselves while still performing their duty to keep their master dozing and dreaming, those infinite musicians pooled their minds and souls into the guise of Nyarlathotep so they could go off and toy with the beings in Azathoth's dreams while their bodies continued the mindless drumming and piping at the center of chaos.

Nyarlathotep is supposed to be the messenger of the Outer Gods. Maybe he cannot act without authorization from the Outer Gods who are still contained? In the original story "Nyarlathotep" he brings news of future doom. Maybe that is literally his purpose.

I think each of the gods in the Mythos represents an aspect of humans. Nyarlethhotep is a manifestation of our cunning, and ability to hide under a false claim of justice, while in reality being shape-shifters with many, many different forms and faces. Cthulu, on the other hand, represents a slumbering strength hidden in all of us, occulted by our fear and rejection of the "impossible." He represents a fear of the unknown, the unknowable, and the all-powerful, while this fear is just a fear of ourselves. This just gave me a new idea for a book.
I'm terrified of this. Not because of the lore, but because a couple of years back, before I learned about Cthulhu mythos, I drew something like this... a huge humanoid monster with a hole for a face and a long, whip like extension out of the back of it's head, looking down on a worshipper on a cliff.... Now I'm seeing this and I'm freaking out big time, because this is the first time I'm learning of this guy, yet I drew something looking almost exactly like it.

I remember reading a story that implied Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls was The Crawling Chaos, and I have to say that I'm not opposed to the idea. Both make deals and manipulate, both love causing chaos, and both may have had a hand in shaping history.
Nyarlathotep also reminds me of Aku from Samurai Jack (only, if the people of Earth had no sacred katana blade that could harm him). Both of them are extremely powerful deities from cosmic origins, can shapeshift, wield all kinds of magical attacks, are very manipulative, cannot be harmed by Earthly weapons, cause all kinds of horrible destruction and chaos just “for the evulz”, and could otherwise destroy the world at any point if it were not for them reveling in their positions of power and ability to toy with the races they subjugate. Even the beginning of the prequel episode, where Odin/Ra/Rama have to team up to defeat Aku’s primordial form, reminds me of the elder gods fighting against other malevolent cosmic deities in the Cthulhu mythos.
+Red Satoshi Ketchum Still, it would not surprise me if some Lovecraftian influences were at least used in Aku’s origin story, seeing how “The Birth of Evil Part 1” reveals that the Aku whom Jack has been fighting all along was just a tiny piece of a possibly continent-sized evil mass, leftover from a cosmic battle. The behavior of the primordial mass during this one clip, “Samurai Jack S3Ep11-Odin, Ra and Rama vs Aku (insentient, evil mass)”, behaves very much like an amoral Eldritch Abomination. Also, when one of his final remaining pieces crashes on planet Earth, it does so in the form of a meteorite that wipes out the Dinosaurs and gradually pollutes the Earth over millions of years, until Aku is reawakened in Feudal Japan. During that point, where Aku’s essence is killing and/or mutating the trees and animals around him, the imagery even reminds me of “The Colour Out of Space” (whether it was intentional or coincidental).
I personally don't believe that Nyarlathotep dislikes us at all, I read an article summary about Nyarlathotep once claiming that while he is the messenger of the gods he actively chastises the awake gods for killing their cultists. I think he is one of the only deities that actually cares about humanity, it may be a twisted care, but care none the less. I'll say that he cares enough to not wipe us out when he easily could, and even talks to humans, if he didn infiltrate human society as major political figures then he also fell in love with humans as well. Of course I may just simply be under his mind control which would be why I like him so much. ALL HAIL NYARLATHOTEP

One of his forms is the Pharoah, as described in the story. Another is called the Black Man who is pitch black with cloven hooves and has been shown to visit witches, sorcerers, and madmen to impart knowledge or power (Dreams in the Witch House, for example). As a sort of terrible, alien Hermes (he is the Messenger of the Outer Gods after all) I can see him/it getting a real laugh out of guiding mortal societies to their doom.

I've started reading the Mountains of Madness, great so far. This series is a great way to introduce people to some of the crazy deities in this mythos.

I would argue that because his name is supposed to be egyptian in origin, its pronunciation is : "NEE-AR-LAT-HOTEP" because of the suffix "-Hotep" found in the name of pharaohs. Just my personal reasoning.
I always read it as "Nar-lyth-o-tep" but with a slight accent on the Nar from the "y" that I can't represent in writing, but kinda imagine it like a cat saying it, so I'd argue "Nar-lat-hotep".
That would then mean that the name Nyarlathotep then translates to mean “son of Nyarlat” as hotep meant roughly “son”. Since in the mythos, Nyarlathotep was a son of Azathoth, then we can guess that the ancient Egyptian name for Azathoth was Nyarlat.
My theory is; He was the one whispering to all those people to do evil. Not playing the part himself. Because if he wanted to enjoy the fruits of his labor, he would be watching it unfold from the shadows, away from the public eye. And when his puppets died, no one would suspect it was him.
I think Nyarlathotep just enjoys being the only Outer God with direct access to Earth. He has free reign to manipulate the planet, and its inhabitants as he wishes to do so without any serious interference and no resistance he cant just blink away. The other active Great Old Ones like Yog Sothoth can only be summoned/invoked with intense rituals but even then their presence is limited.

If we are all figments of Azathoth's imagination, then I would propose that all the gods are aspects of his psyche. Nyarlathotep could be the the consciousness of Azathoth in his tremendous lucid dream.
He is Nyarlathotep. The moon presence has given manipulation to the hunter Gherman. With that in mind, he has also driven the world mad with the blood of Eldritch blood. In the ending when you become a great one, you find out that the moon presence was behind all of this madness in yharnam. That's just my opinion. I believe the moon presence IS Nyarlathotep. Hmmm if I recall correctly Nyarlathotep was also a major villain in the Persona 2 series, Innocent Sin or Eternal Punishment I think? Funnier is that as you mention his 'possible' disguise as Hitler. Nylar was in various disguises of the party members' fears and thoughts... and one of them was in fact Hitler wielding the spear of Longinus (misspell I know). Was always wondering why they made Nylar a Lawful Evil alignment though... the guy's title is literally "Crawling Chaos"

Great explanation of/ take on Nyarlathotep...definitely the most interesting of Lovecraft's creation. My favorite is Hastur/ the King in Yellow, but certainly Nyarlathopet is the only one of the bunch with a true personality. I've never seen or heard a better summary of him than this...great stuff!
Hmm, I always thought of him as the weakest of the gods. Although actively evil, the others are arguably amoral, rather than intentionally evil, he is the only one who loses fights. Without bringing azathoth or the outer gods in to help him, clever mortals and elder gods have beaten him and fouled his plans for destruction. I'd also argue that just wanting to waste his time playing with the ants that are humanity, and sometimes losing, proves that others like yogthothoth and shub are stronger, they have much better things to do than worry about some little humans for more than a few minutes.
Personally, I always liked the idea that each greater being in the mythos represents some facet of the world, he being the natural progression of time, his personal death sentence for mankind is the cruelest, old age.
I love how the Witcher 3 basically managed to introduce Nyarlathotep in such a perfect way in the form of Gaunter O'Dimm down right to his delight/curiosity in humanity, his mischievous conniving personality and his near absolute power over reality yet still make him likeable given the things he does...hell even his motives are understandable.
Wow, THANKS for these videos! I read a bit of Lovecraft (way) back in my teens and early 20's. But, I didn't read enough of him that I learned much about the mythology. You've taken information that is spread across may different stories and condensed it in a way that makes me want to read Lovecraft again, this time with a background in the mythos. I think that'd be lame and would ruin the character of the Joker, since the Joker's entire motif is that of the innate chaotic darkness within all of humanity and how we are all one bad day away from becoming living nightmares. In the end, we can all understand the Joker and that's why he is so fascinating. Nyarlathotep is an insidious incomprehensible deity beyond human reach who delights in playing the game that is mankind. He is uncaring yet invested in us. He wants us to fall into pure chaos but keeps us afloat just that little while longer to see what we do with ourselves. Nyarlathotep is contradictory but not hypocritical, he's just beyond us.
Maybe he manipulates as he does to create scenario's (like world war one and so on) to keep Azathot from waking up (which would result in his own demise I guess?).
I think they did take inspiration from Lovecraft, when making The Mind Flayer. After all, its literally named after the Dungeons and Dragons monster, known as The Mind Flayer, who shares a similar appearance to Cthulhu.
I always interpreted him to be the weakest of the gods, and as such, played games with humans in order to bolster himself. An entity as relatable and “human” as Nyarlethotep seems to be on a smaller scale than the unknowable abominations of the heavens, and yet his continual influence over humanity makes him seem a titan to us.

He's a trickster and manipulator. If he was involved with Hitler or Stalin, he'd be some nameless advisor who whispered in Hitler/Stalin's ear and no one remembers him. Wasnt Nyarlatotep bringing about the end of the world in the short story "Nyarlathotep" with the people being separated into lines going off into the horizons seeing there cities destruction. I have just now started to delve into Lovecraft but i thought of him as more like a prophet for the older gods.
Personally, I think Nyarlathotep is not killing us because of the fact that he would anger one of the other outer gods. That way his fun comes to a end.
Your logic matches mine, Nyarlathotep enjoys playing with humanity, and doesn't want the gods to show up, because then the fun stops. I also argue his favourite trick is to give humanity enough rope to hang themselves with. You summon him for secrets, he gives them to you, but you'll live (or not) to regret it.
I wonder how many events in the mythos were the result of Nyarlathotep’s own machinations, as you say: he can take any form he wishes including other mythos beings, what if every major event was due to Nyarlathotep?

So I had an idea. I see Nyarlethotep as a god that does anything to not be bored, Usually messing around with humans. What if after Nyarlethotep has travelled all of time and space, he tries to find why humans choose to go on in life despite all the hardships they face? This leads him to find out something he can’t do; create art. He can only spew out everything other people have done perfectly, but he lacks the soul and passion to create something truly unique. I was honestly thinking about composing a musical based on this idea, but I want to know what other Lovecraft fans would think. It is sort of interesting to try to make a god that loves nothing more than to f*** up the human race have emotions and a goal, but if he can be a teenage anime girl in a moe/slice of life series, he can be a musical protagonist.
In Edward M. Erdelac's "Merkabah Rider" book series, Nyarlathotep is also revealed to be another incarnation of the Dark Lord Sauron from Tolkien's Middle Earth.
Wish he'd redo the Cthulhu vids, especially this one, at far greater length. There's a ton more to say about Gnarly, most notably that he's the "Soul and Messenger of the Outer Gods", notably Azathoth, and thus is a dubious choice for being more powerful than them. This video doesn't even describe Nyarlathotep's "default" form, The Bloody Tongue, which is an invention of August Derleth, not HPL. Nor did he once use the word "Masks" in describing the being's other forms. A revision is definitely overdue.
To me, Nyarlathotep and Hastur are the most interesting entities simply because they seem the most horrifying to me. Like yeah Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth are the definitions of cosmic horror but Nyarlathotep and Hastur are the most malevolen, at least in my eyes. To me, they are the closest you can get to being evil without actually being such and existing that close to human comprehension while being just outside of it is scarier than not being anywhere near it.

Lovecraft said he was a servant of Other/Outer Gods (and is linked to Azathoth meta-textually because of "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" being related to the abandoned "Azathoth" but that's not *textual* if I'm remembering that story right and I might not be... it's been a bit), and that's about the only canon we've got in what's otherwise as broad a fanfiction as Star Wars Legends canon. There's a few good theories on how he could be related to Azathoth, but they're all theories. Make your own headcanon; nobody can tell you you're wrong but you also cannot be correct and that's okay. The gods are beyond our comprehension as they should be. :-)

To be honest with myself I've always perceived him a the Loki of the mythos
He's more nuanced in terms of wanting to have fun with humans, but actually following the orders of his other Elder Gods to deliver their messages as his duty is. Loki is far simpler, messing with people to either entertsin or advance himself, wanting power mostly.
Nyarlathotep does his job as messenger of the gods and spends his downtime messing with people and watching chaos in general happen. Interestingly, he's both more and less driven than Loki is in some capacity.

Saying that Nyarlathotep is like Loki generalizes things far too much. Loki is a trickster by trade. He was a wimp in combat, at least compared to his arch nemesis, Thor, and so he uses trickery, illusions and misdirection to help achieve his goals instead of brute force. He doesn't just use chaos for fun, he needs it to survive. His conniving and tricky nature is because he can't fight otherwise, his chaotic strategies are by necessity.
Nyarlathotep could walk up to Thor, bitch-slap him to initiate conflict and kill him with that very same bitch-slap. He's a trickster by choice, as he has more than enough power to enslave all of humanity with illusions, magical brainwashing, promises of happiness or by simply showcasing his incredible power and subjugating people through brute strength. But he doesn't. He finds it more fun to just mess with people and drop them into the depths of insanity or cause turmoil amongst people and observe the happenings.
If you really want to compare them, Loki is a political machinator, who is too weak to really stand on his own strength so he has to use clandestine tactics to get his way. Nyarlathotep meanwhile is like a dictator who has ultimate power but keeps it a secret and tells his citizens that the Council decide everything. Then proceeds to warn his citizens of a mysterious terrorist and give randomized descriptions of the suspect, so he can munch popcorn and observe as his citizens kill each other out of paranoia.

I think each of the gods in the Mythos represents an aspect of humans. Nyarlethhotep is a manifestation of our cunning, and ability to hide under a false claim of justice, while in reality being shape-shifters with many, many different forms and faces. Cthulu, on the other hand, represents a slumbering strength hidden in all of us, occulted by our fear and rejection of the "impossible." He represents a fear of the unknown, the unknowable, and the all-powerful, while this fear is just a fear of ourselves. This just gave me a new idea for a book.

Nyarlathotep also reminds me of Aku from Samurai Jack (only, if the people of Earth had no sacred katana blade that could harm him). Both of them are extremely powerful deities from cosmic origins, can shapeshift, wield all kinds of magical attacks, are very manipulative, cannot be harmed by Earthly weapons, cause all kinds of horrible destruction and chaos just “for the evulz”, and could otherwise destroy the world at any point if it were not for them reveling in their positions of power and ability to toy with the races they subjugate.
Even the beginning of the prequel episode, where Odin/Ra/Rama have to team up to defeat Aku’s primordial form, reminds me of the elder gods fighting against other malevolent cosmic deities in the Cthulhu mythos.

Also, when one of his final remaining pieces crashes on planet Earth, it does so in the form of a meteorite that wipes out the Dinosaurs and gradually pollutes the Earth over millions of years, until Aku is reawakened in Feudal Japan. During that point, where Aku’s essence is killing and/or mutating the trees and animals around him, the imagery even reminds me of “The Colour Out of Space” (whether it was intentional or coincidental).

I personally don't believe that Nyarlathotep dislikes us at all, I read an article summary about Nyarlathotep once claiming that while he is the messenger of the gods he actively chastises the awake gods for killing their cultists. I think he is one of the only deities that actually cares about humanity, it may be a twisted care, but care none the less. I'll say that he cares enough to not wipe us out when he easily could, and even talks to humans, if he didn infiltrate human society as major political figures then he also fell in love with humans as well. One of his forms is the Pharoah, as described in the story. Another is called the Black Man who is pitch black with cloven hooves and has been shown to visit witches, sorcerers, and madmen to impart knowledge or power (Dreams in the Witch House, for example). As a sort of terrible, alien Hermes (he is the Messenger of the Outer Gods after all) I can see him/it getting a real laugh out of guiding mortal societies to their doom.

I always read it as "Nar-lyth-o-tep" but with a slight accent on the Nar from the "y" that I can't represent in writing, but kinda imagine it like a cat saying it, so I'd argue "Nar-lat-hotep".
That would then mean that the name Nyarlathotep then translates to mean “son of Nyarlat” as hotep meant roughly “son”. Since in the mythos, Nyarlathotep was a son of Azathoth, then we can guess that the ancient Egyptian name for Azathoth was Nyarlat.
My theory is; He was the one whispering to all those people to do evil. Not playing the part himself. Because if he wanted to enjoy the fruits of his labor, he would be watching it unfold from the shadows, away from the public eye. And when his puppets died, no one would suspect it was him.

I think Nyarlathotep just enjoys being the only Outer God with direct access to Earth. He has free reign to manipulate the planet, and its inhabitants as he wishes to do so without any serious interference and no resistance he cant just blink away. The other active Great Old Ones like Yog Sothoth can only be summoned/invoked with intense rituals but even then their presence is limited.

Great explanation of/ take on Nyarlathotep...definitely the most interesting of Lovecraft's creation. My favorite is Hastur/ the King in Yellow, but certainly Nyarlathopet is the only one of the bunch with a true personality. I've never seen or heard a better summary of him than this...great stuff!
Hmm, I always thought of him as the weakest of the gods. Although actively evil, the others are arguably amoral, rather than intentionally evil, he is the only one who loses fights. Without bringing azathoth or the outer gods in to help him, clever mortals and elder gods have beaten him and fouled his plans for destruction. Personally, I always liked the idea that each greater being in the mythos represents some facet of the world, he being the natural progression of time, his personal death sentence for mankind is the cruelest, old age.
I love how the Witcher 3 basically managed to introduce Nyarlathotep in such a perfect way in the form of Gaunter O'Dimm down right to his delight/curiosity in humanity, his mischievous conniving personality and his near absolute power over reality yet still make him likeable given the things he does...hell even his motives are understandable.

I think that'd be lame and would ruin the character of the Joker, since the Joker's entire motif is that of the innate chaotic darkness within all of humanity and how we are all one bad day away from becoming living nightmares. In the end, we can all understand the Joker and that's why he is so fascinating.
Nyarlathotep is an insidious incomprehensible deity beyond human reach who delights in playing the game that is mankind. He is uncaring yet invested in us. He wants us to fall into pure chaos but keeps us afloat just that little while longer to see what we do with ourselves. Nyarlathotep is contradictory but not hypocritical, he's just beyond us.

I think they did take inspiration from Lovecraft, when making The Mind Flayer. After all, its literally named after the Dungeons and Dragons monster, known as The Mind Flayer, who shares a similar appearance to Cthulhu.
I always interpreted him to be the weakest of the gods, and as such, played games with humans in order to bolster himself. An entity as relatable and “human” as Nyarlethotep seems to be on a smaller scale than the unknowable abominations of the heavens, and yet his continual influence over humanity makes him seem a titan to us.

I also argue his favourite trick is to give humanity enough rope to hang themselves with. You summon him for secrets, he gives them to you, but you'll live (or not) to regret it.

So I had an idea. I see Nyarlethotep as a god that does anything to not be bored, Usually messing around with humans. What if after Nyarlethotep has travelled all of time and space, he tries to find why humans choose to go on in life despite all the hardships they face? This leads him to find out something he can’t do; create art. He can only spew out everything other people have done perfectly, but he lacks the soul and passion to create something truly unique. I was honestly thinking about composing a musical based on this idea, but I want to know what other Lovecraft fans would think. It is sort of interesting to try to make a god that loves nothing more than to f*** up the human race have emotions and a goal, but if he can be a teenage anime girl in a moe/slice of life series, he can be a musical protagonist.

There's a ton more to say about Gnarly, most notably that he's the "Soul and Messenger of the Outer Gods", notably Azathoth, and thus is a dubious choice for being more powerful than them. To me, Nyarlathotep and Hastur are the most interesting entities simply because they seem the most horrifying to me. Like yeah Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth are the definitions of cosmic horror but Nyarlathotep and Hastur are the most malevolen, at least in my eyes. To me, they are the closest you can get to being evil without actually being such and existing that close to human comprehension while being just outside of it is scarier than not being anywhere near it.
