Some artists passionately argue against using black paint in watercolor altogether. Others happily accept the use of black paint as a convenient, ready to go color. In this video I'll explain everything you need to know about using and mixing black and neutral colors in watercolor painting.

Hello! I'm Anthony. An independent artist and illustrator based near Paris in France. Watercolor painting was my first passion. So a few years ago I took out my old paints, and rekindled my love for watercolors. I decided to start charting some of my watercolor experiences in the form of my blog, “WatercolorAffair.com” (and now through my TH-cam channel). My objective was to start sharing some of my hard won knowledge in the hope that it will help and inspire others to paint with watercolors!
    Thank you for following !

Excellent! I painted along with the colors I have that are most similar and created some terrific blacks. Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial/explanation! 😊

Thank you so much!! ❤️ I'm still a beginner in watercolor and I've always wondered why especially the areas I painted with black looked so weird and dirty. The ones I've mixed now had more blueish touch but it looked so much better!!

Excellent thoughts about blacks. Wish you had talked about granulation.

I do agree 99.9% of the time. However, I love to add a touch of PBk11 - Mars Black or Dan Smith's Lunar Black. It give such an interesting texture to watercolors that the complement cannot. Too much of any black is not a favorite at all. Giving myself permission to actually play with black - and white - has been truly fun! New subbie, by the way! I loved your take on lost and found edges!

Brilliant! Thank you so much. An informative video. I really like the look of a self made black. The color explosion possibilities are exciting. Thrilled you did a video on this topic. Thanks again. Cheers!

Really great way to explain the use of black. Up until recently I didn't own a black and still haven't used it. I replaced it with another colour I liked.i do own a couple of neutral tints.

I don’t see any shame in reaching for a pre-panned black but it’s always good to know how to mix it

They don't use black watercolor because they use black watercolour. British voice trying to sell to Americans. Shame on you.
