I remember the day this album came out like it was yesterday. I was working on a mineral exploration site. I listened to the album all day headphones in my ears, cutting core on a core saw. This track was my favourite by far. Before morning break already memorised this song word for word. Just over a year later i became a paraplegic. Got to meet this guys in spinal rehab. Absolutely awesome wholesome dudes. Bumped into them in front of a place that does live music gigs. Guys still remembered me and came up for a chat.
The music video shows a guy going through an addiction, which is represented by the girl. She's the one who is causing the issues, while he deals with the consequences. She buys a bag of whatever in the alley, and he just tags along as if he doesn't want to be there, as if he knows that it's bad but he can't help but go along. Then later on at the end where he tries to get something, she rejects him, representing how that sort of life will take everything from you, and never give anything back. That's why he smiles at the end when she "dies". He drops the addiction, and he's now free. Beautiful music video.
In an interview that Suffa did recently, he explicitly said that the entirety of this song, is about his experiences with and his overcoming of his drinking problem. The entire song, from beginning to end, is: Verse 1) How the alcohol made him THINK people were reacting to his work Verse 2) How he realised what the alcohol was doing to him, and started the process of quitting drinking, and the effects it had on him Verse 3) Seeing for the first time, what his drinking had done to him, the people around him, and his fans.
Guys, for those who don't know, the female in this video clip represents suffa's drinking problem, hence the lyrics, 'What do you expect, im only 6 months soba'. When she falls, the guy in the video, representing suffa, is happy because he has rid of his drinking problem, and he walks away relieved because 'she' would always drag him into trouble.
As an American, I can honestly say that these guys are one of the groups on my list of foreign artists that should have way more recognition. These guys have a true understanding of what hip-hop is and make beautiful music, thanks to their own twist on the genre. If these guys had the shine that other artists have gotten in my country, in my opinion, some of their work would be regarded as classic material within the hip-hop community.
The Hoods are really good. The one thing that really stands out for me is that they have done themselves a great favor by NOT thuggin and keeping it real to their own lives and life in the suburbs of Adelaide. And their musicianship is very evident. Some of the grooves they drop are surreal. Keep up the good work lads !
I am nearly 40 years old. I grew up with bands like pearl jam, Alice in chains, and all of the settle sound. I listen to a lot of older music like Joe cocker, pink Floyd etc. My apprentice left an album of the Hilltop hoods at my place and I had a listen..... All I can say is.. Wow! I know good music when I hear it. Awesome
same it hit me a decade ago when my mom showed me nosebleed section and this popped up while i was playing games and it has always stuck with me emotionally and musically
I saw these guys in Madison, WI USA in like 2015. $13 cover for them to come all the way across the Pacific and absolutely tear the roof off the venue. Such a great show, you can tell how much passion and talent they have.
5 years ago I was close to ending things, then I discovered HTH's music and it fueled me with such a powerful energy that has long lasted to this day, I can't do nothing but thank you guys for putting so much soul in your music, u don't know how much it means to people like me all over the world, we love you, I know I do.
I thought the matter over and I have come to a conclusion that it's unfair not letting you know. Hilltop Hoods needs to know that they have their fans here in Poland. I'm listening their music from over 12 years, "sold" them music to many people, and everyone liked it. We send high fives - great job whole group. This track is great too. Cheers!
I remember learning the lyrics to this in 2012 at TAFE in my landscape class. At the time nobody could touch this. And few could since then. An American in Australia, duel citizenship. I am so proud of both our underground's
Have to agree. Sure, he's had good topic range in his previous solo songs (eg. 1979) but the production here if so refined and every verse is so well written.
"The shine of the bling and the rims that you ride can all disappear so live for the rhyme, not material things your gifts can provide. " What sets HTH apart from the rest in my opinion is that you can tell they love the music and to them that's what they live for, not the money or the fame, and there is an important lesson in that. Much love, my favorite hip hop artists hands down.
Hilltop Hoods aren't making the music for the money. They are doing it for pure passion. I would love to see them really break out in North America. I saw them in a small club in Ottawa, and they blew me away. My sister made me a HTH fan.
You know those songs that if you hear anywhere, the radio, a friend, etc and you just stop and get that feeling inside you, and then you sit in silence listening to how beautiful it is? Yeah this is one of those songs, and it never gets old.
I listen to these guys almost everyday. Suffa is just phenomenal on this track. It's the perfect blend of cerebral lyrics with a terrific beat. Hopefully the rest of the world will spread the word about just how talented all three of them are!
Been listening to hilltops since i was was 15, from the hardroad to this. And yet this song sums it all up, why didn't i listen till now!!! is it to late?
never was a admirer of hths until recently. they've done the hard yards to come out with there own unique music not just straight drum & bass beats. They've add different intrinsic sounds to distinguish each song from the next.A good solid album, well done guys.
Whoa. 3 decades since the start for these true Golden Era hip hoppers. Proud to be from Adelaide. 🥳🕺 Fav song: recapturing the vibe. Hard to pick one i know 😆 Legendary group!!!!
Amazing song, gents! I've lost many buddies to addiction and the War on Drugs, including a couple lady friends. I listened to this a lot in some real dark times, but it gives hope. I love how it points out the dangers of such a life, how people are often loyal only until it serves as more risk than reward. But it's not all their fault either, as we start to address the issues society and law put on everyone close to any of that lifestyle, we will fix the ugly that allows such tragedies. Anyway, love your music and thank you!
I have to say, im Canadian, but the soul, vibe and heart in the hilltop music transcends boarders. Been on my playlist for three years and by far my favorite hip hop band, keep up the vibe guys, and your will by on my life's soundtrack for many years to come.
Guys, you're literally saving hip hop. I am so fed up with the mainstream crap, the monotonous beats and silly lyrics I hear here and there. What you do is a real quality hip hop music I was searching for so long.
Recovery is a journey Not a destination If you’re dealing with this thing And you’re reading this Take it as your sign of solidarity and hope I am cheering you the absolute fuck on man. Suffa You’ve been part of my playlist since I was twenty one Heartfelt
Having been involved in the clip I can say it was a very organic process and there is absolutley no meaning behind anything in it. Just enjoy and dont think too much!
2019 throwback 🤙 there was so much speculation with what was going on with these boys before that album dropped. Such a powerful track from Suffa, wish I could do what he did.

why does everyone compare this to the U.S. rappers? we all know they've gone mainstream in the (*United States of Advertising*) and turned people into marketing icons, with no chance of being role models for the future. Besides that, I truly believe Aus H.H. is some of the sickest shit on the planet, and their talent and determination doesn't need to be wasted on some worthless comparison. it deserves celebration and respect world-wide. (cheers from a yank wandering the underground) Peace.
“I’d rather be part of your playlist.
Then ever be part of the A-list.”
Deep shit right there.
#truth
I just keep coming back for more of this 😡🗣
This is like the least deep part of the song lol
I remember the day this album came out like it was yesterday. I was working on a mineral exploration site. I listened to the album all day headphones in my ears, cutting core on a core saw. This track was my favourite by far. Before morning break already memorised this song word for word.

I never saw it like that
That's pretty well interpreted.
As a former addict... so fkn real....
This song helped me through a break up, it sounds like what I went through. These guys are bloody legends.

@Dizzy Hey thanks man been wondering about that, makes sense.
UnitedFront1989 no worries man.
mind blown
That's why I always read the lyrics if don't understand :)

manjr95 Eminem’s is one of my favourite foreign artists (I’m Freon AUS
I said this back then or before, and still say it. These guys are quality.
For real bruz it's actually sad to see them not fully take off I grew up to these guys
It's not about the money or the applause for these boys
they are classic in aus, i think they are happy with that tbh
Legit one of the hardest Aussie songs ever lyrical perfection

just one of the best hip hop bands EVER. No question...fucking LOVE the HILLTOP!!!!!!

Wow! 10 years later and this is still my favorite hip-hop song, ever.
Thank you for your genius.
same it hit me a decade ago when my mom showed me nosebleed section and this popped up while i was playing games and it has always stuck with me emotionally and musically
This is a ridiculously powerful song...
This isn't Australian hip hop, THIS IS HIP HOP PERIOD. HIP HOP IS ALIVE!! Thank you Hilltop Hoods from the bottom of my heart.
I saw these guys in Madison, WI USA in like 2015. $13 cover for them to come all the way across the Pacific and absolutely tear the roof off the venue. Such a great show, you can tell how much passion and talent they have.
Such an underrated group, love & respect from Canada.
Hip hop was born in the USA.
It died in the USA.
Hip Hop is reborn in Australia :)
Big up from Poland,Hilltop Hoods rulez!
You should check fluent form, australian hiphop at its finest
Fluent Form - Arrows ft Geko
Fluent Form - Dose Of Slang ft One Be Lo
2 gems
ponczeczek I feel like you typed everything but “rules” in a country other than America
It didn't die, it got sick and caught a hospital plane to Australia.
ponczeczek there is still good hip hop in America. It's just buried under all the mainstream crap.
It needed that universal healthcare in oz.
I'm from Spain and I discover the Hill Tops when I was on a Surf Camp, 15 years laters I still feel this is one the best rap groups ever.
from a 44 yr old guy.....you guys are simply outstanding musicians, live long and prosper...hats off to real hip hop,you guys define this!!!

This song is pure brilliance
His battle with the drink, my battle.
Years on and it’s never been more relevant to me.
Suffa always does epic solo stuff. His production is always on point.
5 years ago I was close to ending things, then I discovered HTH's music and it fueled me with such a powerful energy that has long lasted to this day, I can't do nothing but thank you guys for putting so much soul in your music, u don't know how much it means to people like me all over the world, we love you, I know I do.
Ditto.. hope your good and enjoying life.. peace homie . ✌️
I hear ya bruh...I was there 20 years ago
God, this is magnificent.
These guys seriously need to show the US rappers how you write and sing from the heart (like Classified). These guys rock!!! Much respect from Canada!
this is hilltop hoods best song!
I guess you haven't heard Audience with the Devil...
I like this one more mate :)
Fifty in five is definitely up there.
the calling is the best album that's what gave them the name
SippinOnChris
restrung or original
I loved Hilltop Hoods so much. Their lyrics are so meaningful and have deep meaning. They will always be the 1# Hip Hop artists.
I cannot stop listening to this track, its pure quality!!!!!!
Jammed this song with my brother so much after we lost our dad.. Still brings back chills it's almost been 4 years where the fuck did the time go 💔
I thought the matter over and I have come to a conclusion that it's unfair not letting you know. Hilltop Hoods needs to know that they have their fans here in Poland. I'm listening their music from over 12 years, "sold" them music to many people, and everyone liked it. We send high fives - great job whole group. This track is great too. Cheers!
love from Seattle, WA, USA. KEEP IT UP
they will be in Seattle on Nov 20th if you didn't know
I remember learning the lyrics to this in 2012 at TAFE in my landscape class. At the time nobody could touch this. And few could since then. An American in Australia, duel citizenship. I am so proud of both our underground's
"Id rather be part of your playlist." You have for 15 years
Past 5 years for me. But that's dedication
Fuckin ay! Just realised.
Mega Heaps Correct !!
Childhood to here
Yeah bro they succeeded there
Peace, love, and support from America! Love ya Hiltop!
This has to be Suffas best solo (In my opinion)
Have to agree. Sure, he's had good topic range in his previous solo songs (eg. 1979) but the production here if so refined and every verse is so well written.
It's pretty dope given the personal significance for him... But not better than Fifty In Five
No doubt.
@@jampakhedrub13 Thats true, I love pressure, but I think shredding the balloon and fifty in five have to be my two favourite hoods songs.
HTH are one of those rare bands that just keep getting better as time goes on, Love it.
One of the best Songs I ever heard! Thank you very much for your Music. Keep on going, greez!
Much props from America can't believe a thousand people downloaded this
This song is so good! I've heard it like 30+ times in a row now... Can't stop!
"The shine of the bling and the rims that you ride can all disappear so live for the rhyme, not material things your gifts can provide. "
What sets HTH apart from the rest in my opinion is that you can tell they love the music and to them that's what they live for, not the money or the fame, and there is an important lesson in that.
Much love, my favorite hip hop artists hands down.
This is one of those songs you can just listen on repeat all day all night, any moment. Gets you going gives you goosebumps :)
LOVE IT
This is by far my favourite hilltop hoods song
Hilltop Hoods aren't making the music for the money. They are doing it for pure passion. I would love to see them really break out in North America. I saw them in a small club in Ottawa, and they blew me away. My sister made me a HTH fan.
Blown away by the lyrical flow of this aussie band.
Much love and respect from Nz
Dude in the beanie teaches at my school as a temp. Now I've seen it all.
+EGPrime small world, huh
+EGPrime I thought u meant Pressure for a minute there lol
You're lucky man, here in Finland I don't hear this song anywhere unless i play it myself, but it still creates the same feeling.
I'm Aussie but I know lots of Americans that would agree with me America made hip hop but then they killed it and then Aussie rappers brought it back
Romy Bowen they don’t even rap here anymore, they mumble, like watching cavemen trying to perform
Fuzzy it’s not all about the way they rap it’s also about the meaning of the song it’s hip hop that’s not all about partying and sex
You know those songs that if you hear anywhere, the radio, a friend, etc and you just stop and get that feeling inside you, and then you sit in silence listening to how beautiful it is?
Yeah this is one of those songs, and it never gets old.
maybe my favourite tune of all time
I listen to these guys almost everyday.

If Hilltop Hoods isn't truth then I don't know what truth is.

Guys, you're literally saving hip hop. I am so fed up with the mainstream crap, the monotonous beats and silly lyrics I hear here and there. What you do is a real quality hip hop music I was searching for so long.
Everything starts of happy, but after awhile that fun just fades away.
Recovery is a journey
Not a destination
If you’re dealing with this thing

This song holds a place in my heart forever
Good on ya Nick Lambert. That guitar is fucking nice man.
Not that it matters, but the dinner scene is set in the Freemasons hall on North terrace, a seriously weird place. And I think the girl is the daughter of a friend.
indeed it is a strange building.
I filmed a short sci-fi film there! truly a weird place.
i spent a long weekend in that space, undead, killing friends and manipulating strangers.
ah, larping.
not nearly as weird as early freemasons seem to us today?
Illerminutee
@Elliot good for you! live act roleplay is both: the highest form of phantasy and living it out & also a super cringy thing to watch grown man and woman do haha
Thanks Hilltop Hoop for representing the Grand lodge of SA
