She is a badass, but that's not the Octopus' head, it's the body. The body is on top, head (eyes, most of brain and mouth) is in the middle, and the arms are on the bottom. Also, she's right about where the brain is, but their nervous system is partly decentralized, a lot of it is in the arms.
@@davidsauro1793 2/3rds are in the arms yeah. Though the method she uses to kill the Octopus is the most humane I've seen so far. We know how to kill livestock and poultry humanely, and where I live in Scotland it's pretty easy to get humanely killed animals. Octopus are a relatively unique species when it comes to intelligence and the combination of difficulty of killing them humanely puts it over the line for me.

I have a feeling that showing a lot of the aspects of spearfishing just wouldn't go down very well with the core audience of Bon Appetit videos (that core audience being young people who live in cities and that sort of thing). Just the hunting and killing aspect of it would probably upset a lot of people who watch these videos, even though most of those people eat fish and meat anyway. I personally have no problem with it at all and would have definitely loved to see more of the actual spearfishing part of this process, but most younger people these days just go and buy their meat already prepared and don't necessarily like to think about the killing part of it, which is a huge part of spearfishing or hunting in general. Couple that with the facts that spearing fish comes off as a bit more brutal than just normal rod and reel fishing, and the fish or octopus don't die immediately after being speared, and you've probably got a recipe for some upset millennials. Brad also seemed to get the hang of it pretty quickly; quicker than he normally picks up on a new skill, so this video didn't have as long of a section devoted to Brad failing at first before he got the technique down as many of the other videos do. Just my take on it.
@@STSGuitar16 I don't think that's the reason its shorter tho as they showed a few direct kills, and even Kimi biting the octopus to take it out of its misery. They probably just wanted to avoid the dead time of them just swimming around looking for fish
STSGuitar16 I disagree as I would far rather have seen more of the actual process, and I’m one of this younger generation your on about, and I know plenty of people my age would agree with me and don’t just buy their meat without thinking where it comes from and instead respect the ways in which the meat is obtained
STSGuitar16 also with what you say about rod and reel fishing, that it probably less humane as you hook the fish, and bring them out of the water to kill them as opposed to doing it in the water with a spear that likely kills almost instantly

Yeah they really ran with basically what everyone wanted but I didn't think they'd do so quick, send brad around the globe doing anything.
@@realsanjo I hope not 😭 They better keep this indie 👍👍
This was one of the nicest, most environmentally conscious and informative and all together pleasing episodes of It's Alive :D
I couldn't agree more. Well said.
i agree. i think her lifestyle is one that everyone should aspire to. not fishing for their own food everyday per se, but respecting the ecosystem, understanding where the food comes from, understanding the process, and how to minimize your footprint on the world.
“Be completely relaxed”
Brad, who has not appeared relaxed in a single video, even once: ah yeah got it
KIM WERNER! I met Kim freshman year in college. & saw her off & on throughout the years. Girl has not changed a bit. So patient, so charming, so beautiful.
Beautiful soul.
She is beautiful!
also she bites octopus between the eyes and then rip their guts out. She's my hero lol
This is so cute
Marc-André Demers wifey material right there
Ya ever just BITE an octopus right between the eyes? Hardcore
Edit:
Ya ever just turn an octopuses head inside out with your bare hands?
She is a badass, but that's not the Octopus' head, it's the body. The body is on top, head (eyes, most of brain and mouth) is in the middle, and the arms are on the bottom. Also, she's right about where the brain is, but their nervous system is partly decentralized, a lot of it is in the arms.
@@davidsauro1793 2/3rds are in the arms yeah. Though the method she uses to kill the Octopus is the most humane I've seen so far. I love Octopus but until they can be killed humanely I'm not willing to eat one. They are exceptionally intelligent, although their intelligence is very alien to us. We know how to kill livestock and poultry humanely, and where I live in Scotland it's pretty easy to get humanely killed animals. Octopus are a relatively unique species when it comes to intelligence and the combination of difficulty of killing them humanely puts it over the line for me.
I'm still very disappointed that they killed one at all. It's taboo to kill other sapient animal, no reason they should be treated different.
Weiße Wölfin taboo to who? also, why are you watching a show called ‘Its alive’?
Weiße Wölfin goodluck surviving on tofu and lettuce

Or their "2 people eat an entire menu" series, I can't help but feel that those shows are so wasteful. 😐😐
the eat everything on the menu sounds like delaney made a joke about being able to eat everything on the menu and a producer accidently said why not
You know they said that the crew usually eats the leftovers
"Is is bad to touch him?"
"Yeah, totally illegal"
hahaha
What if the turtle wanted to touch Brad?
It actually is illegal. lol
There are FOUR new episodes of It’s Alive! All filmed in Hawaii. I watched them the second I woke up this morning. On the Bon Appétit tv channel. Best morning ever.
Lol I had no idea they had a tv channel. Do all the videos from there come to TH-cam eventually?
Kaleb Claus eventually yeah. Sometimes they come out on TH-cam first. Sometimes they come out on the tv channel first, like this morning. I just keep checking both!
I have amazon fire tv and not seeing the new four only the original four
DBS1590 weird. I had all 4 new ones at 6 am in California.
We have Apple TV
“Take a life and feed a life”. What a beautiful concept! Nothing goes to waste. I wish everyone thought and lived this way!
Brad: "is it bad to touch them ?"
Kimi: "oh yeah totally illegal"
That was really funny for some reason 😂
He was _so disappointed_ 😂This boy.
This woman has living life the right way! STUNNING! 🥰
What a beaut
Having a guide like that is what makes it work. She definitely is a great voice for that place and sustainability.
Hawaiian spirituality and respect towards nature is so moving.
Veles you realize we all should carry it
@@PeaceNLiebe Yes, but unfortunately it's a cultural thing and in other places will be considered gimmicky and people will treat you like a hippy fool.
Kimi is a stunningly beautiful Hawaiian goddess- I'm absolutely smitten.

One of the most beautiful episodes of "It's Alive". BA is consistently making some of the best content on TH-cam.
“Is it bad to touch him?” “Yeah totally illegal” LOL
JabTrill absolutely lost it at this part BAHAHAH
yeah its funny and all but the thing is that its actually a federal offence punishable by jail time and up to 15k in fines due to their sensitivity and the fact that they are super endangered (especially Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles). Touching or harassing them can mess up their behavioural patterns. They are protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 ☺️🌺
f3n357ra I mean I understand why it’s illegal. Just thought it was a really funny and blunt interaction
f3n357ra girl we understand it’s illegal, what i found funny as that the co host didn’t describe that as such, she just really hastily said “no it’s totally illegal”
Riley Cordle oh my bad i couldnt tell but its actually a problem that tourists in hawaii dont know not to touch monk seals or turtles that come to the beach so :/
I admire Kimi and love her for showing how it is on the islands. The Western way is fillets, but on the islands/in the Caribbean you grill or steam fish whole! You just pick out the bones while eating 👍😊 I love how open & receptive Brad is to the experience and you can see he's a humble guy.
Hawaii is so beautiful! One love 💝🙏
yeah I am from Trinidad and I grew up picking the bones out of my fish!
Or fry... yummm. Fresh fish is just on a different level
We do this in Korea too!
Uh, hate to ruin your Hawaiian dream but we have grocery stores here too with filets and fish sticks and all that. And we bring it home and cook it in the pan or oven just like the rest of the US.
kokolatte825 yeah, Kimi is a trained athlete

I think they replaced vinnie, or he just got another job..
Kai DS Vinnie was the cameraman, the editor is someone else
the ending is so wholesome, they're just complimenting each other
The vastness of the ocean scares me and I can't swim, but Kimi made really brought out the beauty and serenity of the sea, respecting the underwater world around her. Thank you, Bon Appetit, and Bon Appetit Aquamarine Specialist Brad Leone, for featuring Kimi. I'm very excited for the rest of the Hawaii series. Thumbs up!
Not sure where you are, but learning to swim is something you should really look into. Not only lifesaving, but also really fun.
You could see how fast the octopus died, he lost color in an instant. Very humane
**NOM**
When you look at it it lost the color in its left half and kept it in its right
@@Marius-rs6nl the color would be the blood pumping to the outside right? So I guess the right side is where the blood stopped pumping and was drawn down by gravity.
J Arnett I thought that was just it losing its ability to control its pigmentation
@@josharntt it reminded me of people having strokes. I thought it maybe biting its brain caused something similar. To me it looks like a straight line seperating the left side from the right.
The pigmentation is controlled by chromatophores and they can stay active after death.

40 minutes of pizza but only 17 minutes of brad spear diving???
Waiting for the blooper reel of Brad getting into a wetsuit.
I think she was genuinely impressed by Brad because some of the looks she gave him in the beginning were questionable lol like maybe she thought she was going to have to walk him through everything and explain detail by detail.
But then the looks in the latter half were more questionable but in other ways lol
Joejoejoe I noticed that too
Kimi is like the girl that gives you food in kindergarten
Please do another episode with Kimi in the future! This is easily my favorite episode of Goin' Places!
"Can't wait to bring this skill and lifestryle back home". I can't wait for Brad's new third eye popping up after he snorkles in the East River's fantastic wourder.
