I've come at this the opposite way - trying to synch audio from an 80s 4 track tape machine to digital video - and the solution is exactly the same; time stretch the video to the audio. So cool, my dude!

I did some thing similar. In the later decades. I was recording a talent show with two reasonably professional cameras and silly little me decided to grab some candid shots with my iPhone...... My unsynced iPhone! What a nightmare trying to synchronize these 10 second, clips three minute clips.... First I had to find where they went but of course the time on the file and the time on the video wasn't quite in Sync so that only got me in the ballpark over like a three hour talent show! But I did it a combination of getting it close and checking the Audio it was worth it. But I now know about time Code and Audio time code at that. And had I had about a week more time to think about what I was going to be doing I probably could've ripped some thing up like the FM radio transmitter monstrosity that I thought of on the way home.....

This was a great video on syncing sound to a silent camera. I have a 16mm Bolex Nonreflex camera that I shoot Black & White film on now. I was thinking of creating an electronic sync mechanism using an opto-coupler sensor and a microcontroller.

Very cool video, found your channel a month or two ago and binged all your videos 😂 Congrats on almost 700 subscribers now! Well deserved! I like to emulate the vintage look and sound of films from the 20s-90s in my videos and your channel definitely has got me wanting to attempt to work with film! 🤩 I’d love to hear more about your time working at a theater 😂 Would also love to learn more about how you do your transatlantic accent and editing for that! You briefly touched on it here but would love a little more in depth video if you’re up for it! And finally, thanks for introducing us to The Vocalitas! Such a cool and talented group! Looking forward to your next video and good luck on the road to 1000 subs! 🙌🙌

    Fantastic video as always!
I’ve been staring at an old Auricon setup for a while now, and seeing what it’d take to sync my BH Filmo , I’m now really tempted to pull the trigger on it.
It comes with the original tube amp, which would be a fun project of its own to fix back up. I do a lot of WWII reenacting so it’d definitely be handy to have around!
Also, they did make an external motor drive for the Filmo, they crop up on eBay from time to time. They take the place of the Filmo hand crank and rely on the internal governor, so it wouldn’t be as good as Crystal Sync but it’d be more consistent, and let you burn a whole spool in one go.

I actually wound up getting an Auricon!!! It's BEAUTIFUL and I can't wait to release a video on it. Sadly, life and work has eaten all my time (and money) so it's slow going. I was thinking of starting a Patreon so I can sustain this channel and afford to make more videos. What do you think!?? Thanks again. Stay tuned!!

I honestly have no idea how I stumbled upon this video...but it's REALLY well done! I've been editing for 46 years, so I've had my share of trying to sync film to audio tracks that weren't recorded in crystal sync...it was, as you said, a nightmare. Thanks for bringing back my horrible memories. lol I'm now one of your 1,000+ subscribers...keep up the good work!!

This youtube channel is so nice. I have been waiting for month for a new episode, finally it's here! It's so Interesting to follow you process. A fine grained film stock as 50d shot wide opened really helps to create a 35mm effect. What do you think of a more contrasty vibrant grade? Digitally process the log scan maybe like they did in "The Aviator" movie, adding a three stripe effect?

Was always interested in purchasing a vintage 40s -50s movie camera but its just that where I live no one sells the film needed and no one can develop them

    • @TheVintageFilmmaker
      @TheVintageFilmmaker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

No one sells it near me either! I was able to find my film supply, and then dev/scan all online. There are a bunch you can try. One good place to start is filmphotgraphyproject.com But by no means are they the only players. If movie film is new in general, I'd start out with Super 8. Much cheaper :D Thanks for the comment!

  • @DRsewage

Actually... if using some kind of tape stereo recorder, One channel dedicated to synch pulses "beeps and boops" when pressing "roll" button, and the other channel just for audio. I think it could be much better way to sync audio, especially when tape would roll at the same time when camera does. So actually it could had sync pulses from just start and pause even in audio source. I have nagra tape recorder, and by setting it to record if you turn of the power and play it back its still on run, so you could hear anyway when cam is rolling or not. But with any tape recorder set to record and controlled power supply in sync with camera would do. One day I need to check if this could really work. But i guess it should.

Really nice work Sir. I have to say, no matter how much the hassle, I hope film continues, for it's REAL look, rather than "Cinematic Luts", which is good also, but nothing matches the real thing. Its like painting on physical medium. All the textures are there.

While I was thoroughly enjoying your video, I screamed out a very loud "YES!!" when you said that the sound quality needs to match the picture quality. There is nothing like the sound of an optical track going along with the picture. Too much fidelity ruins the illusion. Keep up the good work! I have four auricon cameras in various states of repair, but am in California, so can't just run one over to you, but hopefully somebody will help you out. Keep up the fine work!

As a fan of old european trash cinema. My first thought to make a non sync camera do sound is simple .. just dub it! :D
Also. If there's one thing I know about those films and of the low budget scene in Hong Kong and japanese industries as well. It's that the sound almost never matches the musical performances.
Jokes aside. It was fun to see this project go that well.

  • @s.w.2779

Hey, Andy, against all odds you could reach a very steady film speed with an electric motor on a Filmo 70-H. The motor’s torque is constant. That way, at 24 fps, you’d be able to get 2¾ minutes on a hundred-footer. Some 70-H models also take magazines, so some eleven minutes would be possible. Basically, with the Filmos that you have you could have prolonged takes by simply cranking away. No harm to the mechanism. Just a sturdy tripod needed and perhaps an assistant to do the cranking while you peep through the finder.
I have synchronized wild recordings, image and sound, hundreds of hours, on flatbed editors. With an image print and a sound rerecording on magnetic film it takes a little cheating here and there in order to keep things together. Different from the stretching you did to the picture fully analog synch cheating is rather done to the sound carrier. It’s about snipping out a frame length in fitting moments or adding spacer (leader stock) now and then. It’s feasible and unnoticeable, if well done.
About the AMPAS curve, that is optical sound technology up until the end of the fourties. The first magnetic sound recordings in Hollywood were made in 1948 on perforated stock. Your Vision-3 color negative image should rather sound analog magnetic. That’s about as different as a vinyl long play record sounds in comparison to a shellac disc.
Nevertheless, great video, many thanks for the continuation of your work.

I love what you are doing I just found your stuff out of curiosity about using a hand crank camera especially all the old traffic reels filmed from a truck bed; id love to try that in modern traffic with one of those cameras. why don't you get one of those Bell & Howell click on /in spline motors and a magazine ? it would remove your spring limitation by making it direct drive but you would need a compact battery setup

Seeing your blend of modern editing and sound design along with classical filmmaking makes for such a compelling picture! It makes me wonder what most musical acts around the golden era of Hollywood would have sounded like if they had modern audio recording equipment 🤔

There’s also the possibility of getting a fully working Super 8 camera converted to crystal sync when shooting silent cartridges. Then it’s just a matter of slating and lining up the film scan in editing with the sound.

One thing I noticed is that the VOCALITAS, unfortunately, disappear somewhat behind the microphones. Expressly the mouths from which we need to receive their beautiful voices now and then are shielded by ugly black windjammers. I know that you know about that. In the 1940s microphones would not have been allowed so near to people. I know that the learning curve is quite steep. If you wish, I can adjust your Filmos so that the mechanism will not get slower towards the end of a run. Cost is $25 per camera. Cheers!
