Overall an amazing port, and even more amazing they promising a port and actually going through with it, instead of cancelling after a few months. This bodes really well for PortKey Games!
Looks pretty impressive for what the Switch is capable of. Also, the load times reminded me of how older games used to handle things before big open worlds became common. So I wouldn't even be upset by that if I was restricted to just the Switch for gaming.
It doesn’t look anywhere near as bad as I was thinking it would. I already went with PS5 version which was obviously much nicer but it’s still pretty impressive for the switch. I trust your review. I got the Deluxe one today... pre-ordered over a year ago. lol. Haven't opened it yet because I wanted to see what the review would be like. As always, thanks! :D
I recently picked this title up for my Nintendo Switch, and honestly? I’m loving it! I figured that since my old Xbox One probably won’t be able to play a game that’s optimised for the latest gen very well that having it on the Switch wouldn’t affect the performance in a terrible way, but by far the biggest draw was the convenience of portable play, being able to lounge anywhere I want & play Hogwarts Legacy has been an absolute game changer, I’m definitely addicted!
My wife and I bought it last night and it’s been great. It doesn’t take away from the game at all in my opinion. Same for the Witcher when it came out for switch.
The fact that it plays so much better than the cloud games is amazing, there’s no way that I would compare it to the other major consoles. They did an amazing job bravo
We should keep it 100% real. one of the MAJOR draws of hogwarts legacy was not the story or even gameplay (to a lesser extent) it was being able to create your own witch/wizard in the world of hogwarts. Subsequently the BEAUTY of the graphics of the PS5 and PC is what made living in the world of hogwarts legacy so worthwhile.... You dont get that beauty with the Switch. BUT you do get to create your own witch/wizard and explore the world of hogwarts. For switch owners (me included) that ONLY have the switch, this is seemingly one of the best switch ports for a very popular game and they should pick it up if they wanna experience it. For PS5 and PC owners that wanna get it on switch to play on the go.... idk if its worth it tbh.
This is exactly what I expected, and I will still probably buy it for the switch over my pc. I tend to value portability over graphics, so long as the game itself isn't compromised
Wow, what a feat to port this game onto the Switch. I almost expected a cloud game since that’s the route some developers have taken just to “get their game on the Switch” (looking at you Square Enix, KH on Switch is a joke), the amount of time & care Portkey put into this is incredible & respectable.
Great Review as always! Gamewise, the switch version feels like it has its own aesthetic and mood because of the graphics. I personally find it good looking visually, it has some mid 2000s vibe to it. Anyways, enjoying a game (for me at least) does not come down only to visuals, so I am buying this.
Its GORGEOUS on ps5. Amazing. I highly recommend playing this docked on switch P.s. I'm looking to still get it on switch just for portability, if I had the money I would get the playstation portal but not until its on a huge sale. So don't let my views deter you from getting it on switch! Not everyone can get it on PC (requires 16 ram at least for it to run very well which I don't have yet) or console off the bat! If you love the world of Harry Potter nothing should stop you. Highly recommend getting it now while it's on sale ❤ If it's possible at all, get it on pc or console before switch. If not possible, get the switch sale!
I don't know how tf they even manage to pull this up on a 7 years old handled Console, really impressive for what Switch is capable of. Huge props to devs🎉
Porting big games to a handled device that’s hardware is years old is no easy task. Kudos to them. That said I still feel like games like this should be played on actual consoles/PC, but if you don’t have access to it, this is a pretty good going
It's a bit puzzling as to why they stripped so much details out of the shops, given they only have to have those small areas loaded at that point. Maybe the decision to have them split off from the rest of the open world came pretty late, after they gutted them to try and get the memory footprint down.
None of the “issues” presented here are actually issues. If this game was a switch exclusive for some reason, it would be amazing. It’s just a matter of having a better version on newer hardware. That’s all Loved the technical review, as always.
I am impressed and happy it exists - but also surprised and shocked at so many changes and the new loading instances x.x I wish you would had shown or talked about how broom flying in the open world is; but I understand it takes a while before that's even an option and you most likely haven't made it there yet ;o;
Great job on the video! The game looks pretty decent when judged on its own merits. The biggest issue for me in terms of playability would probably be the added loading screens. They're understandable, but unfortunate.
Same here. The loading screens are part of the reasons I dropped Starfield. But here it's understandable because the Switch is countless times weaker than a new Xbox or PC.
I kinda prefer the visuals on Switch, the lighting and the lack of ultrarealism makes it look more... familiar and confortable, wouldn't mind these graphics with much better performance on other platforms.
I knew there would be cut backs but the main gripe I have with it is that the school seems barren as opposed to being an actual school filled with students..
Those textures look like they are much, much lower than the lowest settings on a PC. They did a fantastic job considering what it needed to run on though.
I have about 20 hours on Steam Deck, and about 9 on Switch, and as I go back and forth between them I'm actually kind of blown away by just how well Hogwart's Legacy plays on the Switch. Yes, it doesnt have the same look and feel as the full-fat versions, but it hits a relatively stable 30 fps, and it's very, very playable. And one advantage on the Switch is that you don't have to fiddle with any settings. You just start the game and go and you can be confident its going to be mostly playable for the majority of the game. IN handhald the game is a dream. The only other major difference is the load times - on Steam Deck you can basically travel anywhere almost instantly, on the Switch its...not as instant. But it's fine for what the hardware is. I'm super, super impressed. This is how you do a port correctly.
So the graphics aren't as good as the other versions. I can still go on a wizarding adventure playing portable with headphones on so it's better by far.
I think changing the art style to cel shading would have been smarter, making objects like the hair more solid blocks and the likes instead of trying to force the same look.
i like how the bloody switch runs this game more stably than my GTX 1650 on the lowest possible settings.... i just hope they patch the game soon because its Vram requirements are absurd and the constant stutters drive me crazy to the point where i could not even get past hogsmeade before just deleting it entirely
Great review guys! Honestly if I hadn’t played it already on ps5 I would get it on switch. Well done to portkey games for doing what most studios don’t do. Going above and beyond for the gamers bravo!
I heard that to fix the blurry issue all you had to do is to restart the game The Dynamic Resolution Scaling is the ones to blame, but for Switch it is always a hard job. They may tried hard, the prelude still appears to be amazing because it's mostly cinematic interactive things, but down to the gameplay, it is hard to ignore low res shadows and outdoor areas with fewer things rendering (decreased LoD)
Some of the best games I've played were based on movies. The Blade for Ps1 was one of my favorites, & Merry Shelly's Frankenstein for Sega Genesis. This one looks like it'll be my 3rd fav. 📦
If my brother can stand the loading screens of every building I will use my birthday code of Nintendo for him, after, his birthday is tomorrow, just after mine, thank you so much for the video
Stunning achievement, Mark - sorry, you made me laugh when you stated there is no beard options - I cannot recall beards being a thing in my schooldays - perhaps around the fifteen/sixteen mark for some, and for others much later..
I have the pc version but the Main reason i will be also getting the switch version as well is so to save space on my pc also having the game at a much better 14.2 gig in size compared to something like 60 or 70 gig on pc is great - I don’t mind having more loading areas the game still looks decent and you can also explore a lot of areas
People don’t seem to realise that current gen gaming demand is mostly lighting, the textures are already well optimised to run at 4K. It’s easier to run newer games in 4K than an older demanding title Metro: Last Light because of coding and optimisations. Most 4K isn’t native 4K or has Ray Tracing turned off.
I play through this game pretty heavily during launch week on pc… I can’t believe it runs on the switch period. I was getting horrendous performance on a 3080. Might play through it again, hopefully performance is better.
The Hogwarts Legacy game on the PS4 has lighting issues too. The lights flicker and the sky is pixelated sort of. The Devs had to work around to make it work for older models and I think they had to make sure it was able to work on the switch too because it's a smaller system. Though they still need to work on more bugs. I find heaps on the PS4. Clipping through the ground. Loading into hogwarts the windows disappear then come back. As I said light flickering. There is so much. I guess they tired their best to make it work. It's still fun to play and I'm sure people with the switch will now get to enjoy it even with the loading screens and stuff not being there.
Can't wait to see how the modding community improves this port, a hacked & overclocked switch can run many of these demanding ports way more acceptably.
Honestly, the loading in areas is because the other systems are using ssd, so the loading is a sacrifice to play it on Switch. I personally want this version now after seeing how much effort they put into this.
Ngl im surprised it even made it onto the platform, its the equivalent of when both newer doom games made it on there i was amazed at how well they run (decently lol)
I think if you’ve never played another version of the game, the Switch version will be fine. If you have though, you might struggle to look past the technical limitations. Load times when going through a door inside the castle, usually into one of the courtyards, did not take a while on other platforms from launch. I had early access and the load time was never more than two seconds.
I see the lighting engine taking a hit but to me, the Switch looks a lot cozier and warmer compared to the PC which seems a lot colder and less cozier.
I played this on the PS5 when it first came out. Although I think the dev team did a fantastic job porting it to a system as weak as the switch, I think if you have the option you should definitely go with PC or one of the current gen systems because the game just looks so good. But if you only have a switch, then definitely pick up this version.
It actually looks really good if you don't compare it side to side with the PC version ;) All in all I'm very impressed the devs got it to run the way it does. I think I will wait for a decent sale though, and hopefully by that time the loading times have been addressed.
It's ugly. Cloud Version woul have been a better decision. The devs really tried their best with this port. But the Switch is just to weak. I wouldn't pay 60 bucks for that muddy experience.
@@drippycorpz6828 Cloud version is never a better decision imo. But I agree with the price, I would also never pay full price for an “inferior” version of the game.
Those shaky edges and hair are worse than games had back in 2000. I'd stand simple gfx. I was there 25 years ago. However, all the shimmering is hurting my eyes.
The devs behind this game deserves the success, definitely will buy this on Switch. Honestly even with the massively stripped down graphics, the game still looks decent.
This is for sure the best they could have done with this port. I am impressed, especially with what the PKMN franchise are doing with their games in mind.... But I am not (yet) willing to spend EUR 60 on this. I have to think about it for some time. Anyway, thank you so much for this review, it will help me a lot with my final decision! Have a great day. If you keep in mind what hardware the Switch is, it’s a miracle that this port was possible at all. Gotta say congrats to the devs. I’d like to see this kind of dedication to squeeze everything out of the hardware on the other systems as well.
They're not so much squeezing the hardware as shaving off layers of visuals until it just barely works like most Switch ports from more powerful platforms. The question is, just because you CAN get something barely working on the hardware, does that mean you should? If it's so pared back it loses a lot of the visual identity, what's the point? Look at the recent port of Mortal Kombat 1...prime case of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".
@@yellowblanka6058 You are factually wrong. It’s complete bs that most Switch ports barely work. MK1 is shit, but HL looks good and keeps the fps target of 30. The loading screens are a bother but not a deal breaker. MK11 already ran bad, so that’s more on the dev’s side and not on the hardware. You do know that back on the day it was completely normal that devs had to port their console games for gb/c/a, ds and 3dS right? And that could mean the development of a completely different port with different graphics and so on. This port reminds of that and it does a good job. If you have the option, of course you won’t but this port. But for kids and for people who want the Switch portable experience, this is a good game. Hell, it’s better than the last Pokémon game. It all comes down to optimization graphically and performance wise.
@@gumpyflyale2542 Did YOU?! If you can look at the visual comparison and tell me with a straight face that everything is “in tact” (“intact” is one word btw) I don’t know what to tell you. Beyond that the game is no longer open world with loading screens everywhere. Ports like this are really no different than Wii ports that modified games so they could work within the limitations of the hardware.
@@yellowblanka6058 Also let's be honest, it's visually cut down so much that at this point looks like a completely different game. Even Witcher 3 looks miles better than HL on Switch :/
I honestly expected a disastrous version of the game that was nothing like the current gen release. I'm honestly impressed. Can't give this studio and devs enough props for taking a popular IP and making a passion project that respects the IP and doesn't milk you out of every dime you have. Very much hope to see future Hogwarts games from these guys and maybe a shot at some other popular IP down the road.
The fact that they got this game running on the switch at all is commendable. Definitely not the best way to play the game, but if you ONLY have a switch then it looks like it's worth picking up.
Works great on my steamdeck. But my 2060 gaming PC it works like muddy shit. This is after that big update. I had to install double the Ram just to finish the game. From 16 to 32.
The fact that the developers put in the effort to make it work on switch the best it could and in a decent playable condition is great to see as so many other games would have run very poorly.
This proves that the devs of Mortal Kombat 1 really have no excuse, and their Switch port was just a low effort cash grab. Avalanche has proven they're a dev that can be trusted.
There’s 120+ million reasons they “bothered” Compared to the 40 million… maybe combined next gen reasons to develop for the others …I’m only impressed with their business strategy. Who doesn’t have a switch? I’m developing my games for the larger market share if I want to make money 🤷🏻♂️

Not being fully open world isn't too huge a deal to me. Definitely will get this on a sale and maybe when I'm done with TotK.
I already ordered my copy. I was praying for Witcher 3 quality, which it looks like this is, so I'm stoked! I only play on the switch, so this is my first experience with HL, so as long as the overall experience is there, I'm OK with the drawbacks. Thanks for the video guys!
Runs better than the witcher 3 does but that is because HL on the Switch has loading screens between sections/shops/cairn dungeons so its not as open world as the witcher 3 is

They had to cull back so much detail and add loading times to get it working on the Switch that it almost looks like a different game. If the screen and texture resolution is so blurry you can't really resolve anything, why bother?

That would be around the last tume I played a harry potter game so I def agree that it has its own charme
Its GORGEOUS on ps5. Amazing. I highly recommend playing this docked on switch
Highly recommend getting it now while it's on sale ❤
If it's possible at all, get it on pc or console before switch. If not possible, get the switch sale!
I don't know how tf they even manage to pull this up on a 7 years old handled Console, really impressive for what Switch is capable of. Huge props to devs🎉
It looks like the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix game, from 2007
1:58 What do you mean, no aliasing? That's aliasing like crazy? Even before you zoomed in.
Crazy that this game looks/plays better than the last Pokemon game.
Porting big games to a handled device that’s hardware is years old is no easy task. Kudos to them. That said I still feel like games like this should be played on actual consoles/PC, but if you don’t have access to it, this is a pretty good going
I'm still always amazed whenever they can get a game like this to work on switch, let alone run well! I'm always glad to see it.
well? u call ps2 graphics at 27 fps well?
It's a bit puzzling as to why they stripped so much details out of the shops, given they only have to have those small areas loaded at that point. Maybe the decision to have them split off from the rest of the open world came pretty late, after they gutted them to try and get the memory footprint down.
It's not even open world
I think it's to reduce loading times.
None of the “issues” presented here are actually issues.
If this game was a switch exclusive for some reason, it would be amazing.
It’s just a matter of having a better version on newer hardware.
That’s all
Loved the technical review, as always.
I am impressed and happy it exists - but also surprised and shocked at so many changes and the new loading instances x.x
I wish you would had shown or talked about how broom flying in the open world is; but I understand it takes a while before that's even an option and you most likely haven't made it there yet ;o;
I pre-ordered this a year ago and I'm eagerly awaiting Amazon to deliver my copy. Thank you for this overall all and exhaustive review.
I’m so glad they focused on current gen release and then took time for past gen afterward
So the graphics aren't as good as the other versions. I can still go on a wizarding adventure playing portable with headphones on so it's better by far.
Fart sound's
I heard that to fix the blurry issue all you had to do is to restart the game
The Dynamic Resolution Scaling is the ones to blame, but for Switch it is always a hard job.
I have it on switch, ive never played it on a different council b4 and i absolutely love it
Great review as always, but could you indicate somehow which footage is taken in handheld mode and which in docked in your future videos?
If my brother can stand the loading screens of every building I will use my birthday code of Nintendo for him, after, his birthday is tomorrow, just after mine, thank you so much for the video
Stunning achievement, Mark - sorry, you made me laugh when you stated there is no beard options - I cannot recall beards being a thing in my schooldays - perhaps around the fifteen/sixteen mark for some, and for others much later..
I kinda like the color grading in the switch, especially the dining room intro
I would be fine with an option upon entering a shop to forgo the 3D graphics and just have a menu with items to buy/sell on it.
I play through this game pretty heavily during launch week on pc… I can’t believe it runs on the switch period. I was getting horrendous performance on a 3080. Might play through it again, hopefully performance is better.
"Can't play with someone with a beard" sir they are teenagers 😂😂
Everything looking more "cartoonish" kinda looks good, like it's just a different art style instead of just looking bad.
This is a massive slap in the face for Pokémon. As if they needed more slaps in the face.
Great tech review - only one out there so thorough.
I enjoy your vids on the tech performance of these big games on switch.
The fact this game runs on decent 30fps makes Kingdom Hearts Cloud even funnier
This is very impressive. I am happy that switch users get to play this good game, and decently too.
Looking forward to any update videos for the loading times on this game. I want to get it for the misses.
I see the lighting engine taking a hit but to me, the Switch looks a lot cozier and warmer compared to the PC which seems a lot colder and less cozier.
Someone please port GTA V like this 👀👀
I'd say Witcher and Metro are probably the best Switch ports so far but this is reaaaallll close. Im impressed.
This a really fun game full stop. I won’t double dip to play it handheld but even without all the visuals I’m sure it’s still immersive and fun.
For a silent handheld that lasts 5 hours on battery this is amazing.
I played this on the PS5 when it first came out. Although I think the dev team did a fantastic job porting it to a system as weak as the switch, I think if you have the option you should definitely go with PC or one of the current gen systems because the game just looks so good. But if you only have a switch, then definitely pick up this version.
I am amazed this port is possible. The game doesn’t even run that well on pc as it is
i upgraded my pc for this game. .... so that it plays on the switch is freaking amazing. it doesnt look to bad honestly
I'm glad that I got it on the ps4. Although I'm glad they waited since it doesn't actually seem too bad.
Greetings from Austria! 🏔🏔🏔
Unbelievable. I was almost certain it’d end up as a cloud game. Props to the team.
Yeah they have made it run really good will definitely double dip on the switch version
@@therunawaykid6523 Why on earth would you play this version if you have another version on Xbox, Playstation or PC?

@@yellowblanka6058
You are factually wrong.
@yellowblanka6058 did u watch the video this things runs well on switch its a miracle and the full game is in tact
Sadly the turn-your-broom-into-a-dragon mod is not available on Switch but it still looks good otherwise

Very much hope to see future Hogwarts games from these guys and maybe a shot at some other popular IP down the road.

Yeah I would definitely say one of the best switch ports I’ve seen so far I don’t mind extra loading areas I kind of expected that
This proves that the devs of Mortal Kombat 1 really have no excuse, and their Switch port was just a low effort cash grab. Avalanche has proven they're a dev that can be trusted.
There’s 120+ million reasons they “bothered”
Compared to the 40 million… maybe combined next gen reasons to develop for the others …I’m only impressed with their business strategy. Who doesn’t have a switch? I’m developing my games for the larger market share if I want to make money 🤷🏻♂️

Best Switch reviewers indeed.

The game looks and runs better than I was expecting, given the multiple delays. The loading screens when entering a new area/town are forgivable, but having to endure those when entering buildings/shops is rough. But hey, at least this saw the light of day! I'm still sad about the Marvel Midnight Suns Switch release getting cancelled.
Yeah that's a big issue and I am really glad I spotted it honestly - have seen some other Switch reviews say that the game is identicle and it's a miracle port etc etc. Not quite the case. Mark
A for effort hogwarts developers. If only something like this would of been done for Kingdom hearts.
Which is actually weird for KH since JP developers usually struggle with PC ports instead of the other way around.
Exactly what angers me is the fact that kh1,kh2,birth by sleep, dream drop distance, decoded would run smoothly on switch no problem but square didn’t even care
Whoa, finally footage of the game on Switch. I've never played this on any other system and I think it looks pretty good! Even with its weird looking technological workarounds to make it work, still looks incredible. They should be proud to show off the Switch footage.
