I love my machine it looks to be the same. Yes tons of maintenance and adjustments needed. But for a guy who has never touched a sewing machine till this one i love it and crank out a ton of product
@Willam Ward yeah first time I used any sewing machine. I didn't even know what a bobin was🤦♂️ thank goodness there are tons of videos on TH-cam. You seriously need to sand / file every surface the thread comes in contact with. And keep it properly oiled. I use 3in1 oil for most areas. Then axle grease on the back of the crank plate. I just bought a kit to turn it into a motorized machine. Looking forward to get that set up.
This gives me hope. I have one ordered already and I am waiting for delivery. I have no sewing machine experience, only hand sewing patches on my work clothes. I hope to be able to use it to do repairs on denim and canvas as well as stitching patches onto leather. I’m mechanically inclined and actually look forward to tinkering with it to get the “bugs” out. So glad there seems to be a lot of information available about this machine online.
This is the first review I've seen of this machine where the base was properly built to take full advantage of the length of the sewing machine arm. Well done. You didn't sacrifice its capacity by placing a brace too far forward.
I've had one for some time, made a stand and table much like the ones shown here. The only advice I can offer: look at how you hold the crank handle in your right hand. I tried palm up, palm down, palm facing the needle, palm away from needle. Nothing felt right or like I had much control. It works best for me (and my weirdly baby-sized hands) if I grasp the handle like it was a screw-driver, and I was trying to tighten the handle-screw itself! This puts my elbow roughly center of the flywheel, and I turn my hand in a circle, rather than 'hauling on a crank handle'. Works for Me, no guarantees for Thee!
Very well made video. I love the magnet idea to pull the bobbin out. The stand and removable table is really nice too. As for the wife cranking the handle, that might not work for all of us but we can dream. Thank you for making this video and for sharing.
I bought my sewing machine a few months ago and love it. The legs work fine if they are positioned properly, so try different placement before throwing them away or building a base. I use the legs when sewing and sitting on a chair. Works really well that way and even when I stand it on a desk and stand and sew it hardly wobbles if at all. I put some tape around the top of them so they stay in place when I pick it up to move it around. I found that I do not have to thread it on both tension wheels and for me it works like that, by just using the second wheel tensenoir. The sharp teeth at the bottom has not been a problem for me making knife sheaths and some covers for my various shop tools. I did not file any edges down as some have as they have caused no issues. It has given me a lot of hours of fun.
I have bought more than one of these machines... the first one had legs so bad... I could bend them with my bare hands. The angles on the plate, had a downward tilt so bad there was no way to get the cylinder arm level. I like my block of 2x8 and big C clamp just fine.
Anyone with any industrial machine should learn how to maintain them. My husband has kept my 8 machines working perfectly for 40 years, but he also makes me learn how to maintain them. He worked for Sears for 22 years and is an amazing sewing machine tech as well as almost anything else. I have a Consew 206 RB-1 Commercial machine, 4 Sergers, a blind hemmer, an embroidery machine, the same machine that doesn’t have the embroidery module and actually some other machines that we pick up and repair and then give away to people. I have been blessed to make my living for many years designing and fabricating Commercial and Residential Awnings, Marine Canvas and Upholstery, Slip Covers, Draperies and Cornices and soooo much more. Sewing is an art form we used to teach but is a dying art. I see that Adler sitting back in the corner 😃😃
Great review and descriptions I’m handicapped that only one hand ,arm works due to a Tramatic Brain Injury I do sew with a Chinese clone walking foot sewing machine I bought on eBay. 15 years ago I would need to convert the Cobbler machine to a motor driven one but it looks like that may be achievable With my injury I sometimes need to modify shoes. To get them to fit more comfortably Over a leg brace I need to walk with I’m pretty sure I’m going to wind up with the same machine as yours btw I’m a ewtired Woodworker so I am pretty good with tuning machinery and making accessories for them as that is often the case with Woodworking machinery
I've seen a couple videos on these machines, now. On another video, a commenter said that they converted an old Singer treadle base to turn the hand crank. I'm curious if a belt drive sewing machine motor and pedal can be used. There are such motors available for replacing those found on vintage machines, complete with wires and pedal for about $50 us online, the biggest problem would be finding a drive belt, I think. Just basically thinking out loud.
Very good video. I have had mine for a couple of years now and love it. Also, buying one of these machines was the only way I could afford any kind of leather sewing machine. Keep it oiled and it will do a good job. :D
I really love my machine, These machines definitely need some work when they come straight out of the box butt I find them to be very user friendly Easily customizable and modibible i've done Some customizing and modifying to my machine I've also made a couple of videos and put it on my channel showing what I have done, Thanks for taking the time to make the video👋🏻👀👍🏻
I am motorizing mine, I'm not sure how to tape and post video's here. You have an interesting last name. My high school principle was named Keith Tarbox. I graduated from the high school in Woodland Washington back in 1972.
Like the way you converted it into a flatbed machine. I have several machines including s Seiko barrel arm industrial that I don't use but I might convert it to use the table and clutch motor
Just bought one a week ago on eBay. I built a stand for it, haven't had time to really get in to it. I plan to make knife sheath and holsters with mine. Thanks for the review very helpful.
Instead of electrifying it, how about a set of bike pedals below with a belt/chain to drive the crank wheel? I think you might get better speed control with that type of a setup. You would also likely get higher low speed and startup torque out of such an arrangement.
It appears you need to lubricate all the critical rotation parts. It should turn much easier & smoother. Polish the bobbin carrier with a dremel wire brush.
I love old school machinery , one I would rather forget is the old belt driven peddle operated dental drill when I was on the receiving end of the work ! 😂
I love mine but purchased it to sew pvc patches on beanies/hats and the pressure foot is ruining the patches. I adjusted the spring all the way and it was still leaving dents. Maybe filing it down will resolve the issue. I bought a speedy stitcher but even that will be too time consuming if I`m to crank out a decent volume if need be
I'm looking to start making leather jackets and I'm going to be using buffalo or pig split suede as it's tough and doesn't "go bald" as quickly as sheep, lamb or goat suede. I was looking into buying a regular juki straight stitch machine. For me, modifications and time aren't really a problem. There's something I find therapeutic about having no motors running. Will this be good for sewing thin and thick leather? I'm very excited to buy one as well as the presser feet attachments.
Great machine. Some have bearings in them. Mine has pays its way sewing Work Jeans about 11 of them along with custom dog callers for my pups and more. They feel stout like an old steam engine chugging along. Leather is pricy but looking forward to a project.
Great job at the review. Your carpentry skills; design & execution are very good. Nice looking custom mount. I really liked the auxiliary table. The best Chinese Sewing Machine Review and modifications on TH-cam. Fun Quotes (pharaphrased): "It really works well when my wife turns the crank for me while I sew." I am very excited about the machine and would like to buy the same sort as you use. Could you advice a machine like this with a fewer extra fees? Thank you in advance for your reply. @@TheSwedishMaker Thanks ! :) That's great ! I'm thinking about replacing it by a roller presser foot (with the wheel on the side of the needle). Do you think it's possible on this chinese patcher sewing machine? Does it exist any roller presser foot that could fit to the two screw mounting?
When you crank the crank it seemed awfully stiff. Everything has to be like it is running on bearings,, to get your easiest stitch locomotion. I would definitely add a motor, and rheostat foot pedal.,, Much easier, and you have two free hands.

That’s really smart 👌👌👌
This machine is totally worth it. Only suggestion is to step needle up to Organ 15x1 HAX1 130/21 on Amazon for leather.
Yeah I agree! I´ll definitely check that needle out as I have just been using the ones that came with the machine so far.
Amazon sometimes has 140/22 needles in 15x1 also, and these work with 138 to 207 thread on the Chinese patcher (with some tinkering).
I think this would work great for thick quilts also!
It appears you need to lubricate all the critical rotation parts. It should turn much easier & smoother. Polish the bobbin carrier with a dremel wire brush.
About to order one mainly for leatherwork, as well as a bit of canvas projects.

Will this sew rubber soles?
Yes
The hand crank seems to be quite stiff at certain points, I've noticed this on a few vids of reviews, I know the behind looks kind of "egg" shaped, is there a way of stopping this jerking movement?
Is that jerkiness actually purposeful? It might assist puncturing the leather.
The only way is cleaning, polishing, and lubrication. Most of the jerky movement is due to the cams on the back and needle plunge. It might benefit from more inertia, i.e., a bigger, heavier flywheel.
