This video is a bit misleading. Xiong did not do as well in the first five dives. Louganis deserved the win, although Xiong certainly outdive him in the final 5 dives.
First time to see this event of Xiong Ni in 1988. I was amazed that even at his young age he already had the maturity and calmness in his dives. So focused and consistent. =)
Are you kidding me? None of Louganis’ last three dives are on par with Xiong’s last three dives, they all have big to huge splashes, yet Louganis got 8.5 to 9.0 and Xiong mostly only get 7.5 to 8 foe his near perfection dives and entries. What the hell was going on? Xiong should have easily won the gold here were the judges not blind or biased.
splashes are not the only part of diving. Along with all the other parts of diving that judges look at, one has to consider how body size/type affects the size of the splash. Xiong was very small and slender, making splashless dives much easier. If you look at Xiong dives in slow motion, many of them were under-rotated or over-rotated, yet still left no splash to speak of.
Oh man! I have been searching for this all over the net for decades!!!! Most epic performance by xiong ni. The English commentary on this video was absolutely epic. I still feel xiong won this and louganis was favoured. If you have the English version, please upload!!

Remember watching this when I was a kid, opened my eyes that Olympic was actually rigged. Greg water splash can’t even make it to top 10 in today standard. Xiong and China was robbed of Gold medal, pure biasness, that’s why the scoring system was changed in today scoring standard Greg will not even crack top 10. Xiong was class if its own.
Most people also think the same. But china has since then dominated this sport and their national diving standards surpass that of the olympics. The muricans dont stand a chance today against chinese divers.
Xiong Ni is amazing. That 2.9 difficulty second dive is perfection itself. Whiplike snap to it. Very clean entry. Just wow! At such a young age too. Xiong was only 14 yrs old competing against a muscular and experienced athlete, Greg Louganis aged 28 yrs. So very impressive for this young kid. Greg of course was superb, poetry in motion. These dives are so dangerous with their heads and toes coming 6 inches from a concrete platform. One tiny mistake and you break your head with that force.
Thank you for the link! I watched the video.. That it was very interesting. I can post a link on the info of the video. I could try posting the video but I doubt they will let me.
Xiong Ni’s gold was stolen from him. Louganis likely got pity points because he hit his head from his previous dive. He made such a grave error and still won, the favoritism was absolutely ridiculous.
The Chinese kid was much better. He jumps just as high, as good or better form, finishes his rotation sooner, opens up and stretches out earlier, and had clean, vertical ripped entries on every dive. Yikes.
Now, in 2024, days after the Paris Olympics on which China diving team swept all the eight gold medals, Chinese diving team responded to the "favor" of the judges in 1988 with a smile.
I think the chinese made their national competiton standards so high that many consider the chinese national diving competition to be even more difficult than the olympics. Many of the international divers who made it to the olympics this year dont even stand a chance of getting selected in the chinese national team. They are just at a totally different level when it comes to this sport.
@@drjowjow Indeed, just like Chinese table tennis. Many top players didn't even make the national team to represent China (because on the top 3 in the team can go) on Olympics, so they go abroad to represent other countries to play in Olympics.
Diving judging is very subjective. I don’t know since when they started using fina judges at international competitions. Judges look at take off hight, distance, forms, movements in the air, come out and entry to determine a score. Xongni had everything. I compared 1984 and 1988 platform judging. 1984 judging was much looser and divers got a lot of 9s with much worse dives. I am glad that now the system is better. US was dominating the sport until the 80s. Louganis is a legend. He has power and grace. My children are divers and met him twice. Xongni was superb in 1988 Olympics. He is the winner of that game in my heart!
Both men were brilliant, the best in the world and I love Greg Louganis for so many reasons other than diving but in all honesty Xiong was the winner here..his dives were smooth as silk, flawless compared to Greg's splash. Both great but the gold should have gone to Xiong.
Everyone saying Greg lost but his last dive’s difficulty was rated 3.4 where as Xiong’s was rated 3.2. That is why he won. I’m not trying to take anything from Xiong, obviously he was great.
you are right Greg's DD was higher for his last dive..But on some of the other dives Xiong didn't seem to get as much as he should have... but you know.. @@wip1664 I didn't need to write a comment. Totally agree with yours. We can see Louganis splash is most time vertical and not scattered, but always bigger due to his solid complexion. No doubt that both divers gave an unforgettable display of perfection.

10:43, So that’s a 7-point-worth dive, according to the Zim judge???!!! How could there not have been any uproar from the majority of the people, especially fellow judges?!
Higher DD means nothing if execution isnt equally done well. The judging bias was very clear even from an outsiders POV. The swedish judge was particularly blatantly giving low scores to the chinese diver.
Louganis's last dive didn't get much height, his tuck was quite loose and he was a little late into the water. His feet going into the water at the very end of the dive is the exact moment the water splashes, not the moment his torso hits the water nor the moment water surges upward after the body is completely underwater. His last dive was simply weak and under-rotated. He had AIDS and it was the tenth dive in his secomd competition. That is no reason to give the dive good scores (and just enough to give him the gold). Evidently rigged.
This same American diver was given an Olympic gold for hitting his head on the diving board by the judges, apparently for his sportsmanship and bravery because he continued to compete and complete the event despite of his injury. I’m American what I see The last dive a little boy Chinese he did bester than American. Some times the judges too old can’t seen.
I like Greg!!
ZIM 的裁判究竟懂不懂跳水?被人收買了吧😮給這位中國這近乎完美一跳7分?
That Sweden judge is too dang biased!
You are definitely not the only one who things so!
Judges did score Xiong Ni higher than Louganis for the final dive. 2 Judges gave Xiong 9.0. The reason Louganis received a higher total score was that the dive had much higher difficulty. No scandal here. Louganis deserved the win.
They did score him high on the last dive but not as much on the other dives. In diving a lot is subjective that is for sure! Thanks for your comment!! We do appreciate it!
Bull Shit. Louganis was shocked that he got 86 for the last dive. Just look at his body language when he come out of the water. Unfair. Xiong Ni is definitely fantastic and stable in all rounds. His dive is artistic. And you see that is why China is dominating all this time from 1988 onwards.
