Chapters: 00:00 Intro - Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins 00:35 Film Composition in Prisoners 01:50 Cinematic Lighting in Sicario 03:48 Characters & Context (Wide Shot Framing) 05:58 Outro - The Chaos of Life
I love that Denis has used 3 different cinematographers for his Sci Fi movies. Bradford Young for Arrival, Roger Deakins for Blade Runner 2049, Greig Fraser for Dune
@@abhisheksharma1779 I think its also because of scheduling. I know Deakins was working on 1917 so he couldn't do DUNE and was likely working on Hail, Cesar! while Denis was doing Arrival... but I think you're also right about him wanting them to have a different visual style.
I recently was going thru all Villeneuve's films, getting ready to DUNE and in the minute I finished watching Blade Runner 2049 after all those marvellous films I grabbed my phone and see that this video was just published. I'm living in a simulation right now.
I love it when Roger Deakins said "You dont know where its going" in the outro. That is absolutely true when it comes to making films, especially in the cinematography area. Excellent video!!
Well, he nailed it once more with Dune. What a masterclass in world building, character and visual splendor. Please pay to see it in the cinemas so we can get the second part!
His movies are visual masterpieces. There's something about this team that screams masterpiece every time they work together. This was a great breakdown of why they're so good at what they do.
When you have a great compelling story mixed in with top notch cinematography and lighting it just elevates the movie to another level such as in the case of movies like Alien (1979) / Aliens (1986), The Thing (1982) and the movies mentioned here.
An absolute pallet of differential beauty. I love this film so much not cause it embodies the horror of my inhabited culture but glorifies it through the frame. Ty Villeneuve & Deakins.
It's so fascinating to have an opportunity to take a peek into their head and get a hang of their thought process while looking at the final product. I hope one day I'll be able to personally thank whoever thought of "marketing" the project management software through educational content about cinematography and film-making in StudioBinder and actually drive the project to this level. Huge thanks from the bottom of my heart to everyone involved in creating and spreading such valuable content in a very-very pleasant way. Hats off to y'all.
You most definitely can tell Roger deakin draws inspiration for his shot framing and composition, from paintings. Often in the films he's worked on, we see very hard and clear reflections and shadows of light and quite clear patterns of colour.
What I really liked about Villeneuve is that you can clearly see his work improve after each project. Arrival was great but Blade Runner was SUPERB from a technical standpoint
Just have to say, the work you guys do at studio binder is amazing and truly inspiring. Mark my words, you will see my name on the big screen one day… A film by Carson Vescovi
Sicario Was such an amazing movie to watch. You know it's good, if it gets mimic'ed. The second was less so, because she wasn't in it for me. But, dayum was the first awesome!!
This video makes me wanna rewatch Sicario and 2049. I wanna see Prisoners but idk… I’ve seen glimpses of it and it’s disturbing af, not ready for that 😂 Can’t wait for Dune!
People who have short attention span are the ones who call his movies slow. Of course, 15 second Tiktok videos have ruined most people's attention span. It is something you don't feel, but does the job without you getting knowledge of it. Sad to see masterpieces like BR2049 fail just because iT wAs SLow anD LoNg
Yeah cut and paste humorless dark violent scenes. In all of his three out of 11 movies that anyone actually saw. Still he is the best man to do Dune cause Dune fits into that formula. And I hope he gets to make the next 11 movies and not shade others....when he is left in doubt about even making the second part of Dune....while Feige and Marvel was given carte Blanche to do as many Marvel movies he wanted to after Iron Man.
It’s like DESTINY. I was so annoyed at how this PHOTOPHILE failed at Dune and here is evidence that he truly believes the essence of storytelling is a matter of light and photography. Villeneuve left so much unexplained and unsaid in Dune it’s almost as if he hates the STORY. All he cares for is the photography, scenery, visuals etc. He had 156 BLOODY MINUTES to tell a story and build a world, a society but no. He FAILED beautifully by leaving all kinds of things vague and unclear. All this INSTAGRAM Director cares for is “how it looks”. Optics over substance. Shai Hulud take him. David Lynch only had 137 minutes for ONE FILM. Vilenuff couldn’t even tell the basic elements of the story in 156 minutes of TWO FILMS. J’accuse.
Too bad they forgot to tell engaging stories in Blade Runner 2049 or Arrival. These 2 films are beautiful empty shells, making them useless and innofensive souless things.

All are nominated for cinematography Oscars!
*Dune is getting nominated
I think Deakins said he wanted to do Sci-Fi for Blade Runner but didn't want to follow it up with another straight after.

Laws of attraction working in a mysterious way.
One of my favorite directors of all time, Denis Villeneuve. Thanks you guys for sharing this.
Glad you liked it!

Just have to let your instincts go!
whereas in another video in this series, he said he kinda know what the final scene would look like lol in advance

And don't forget to see it on the biggest screen possible to you. It's worth it. It _is_ Dune. It _is_ cinema.
Roger Deakins didn't work on Dune. Greg Fraser is the Cinematographer.
@@henryliau Sure, I think he meant Denis Villeneuve though.

Stop shilling, it's embarrassing.
Denis and Roger are among the greatest artists in the film world. Every viewing of their work is such a beautiful experience.
We're lucky to have them 💖
One of my favorite director-cinematographer partnerships of recent years along with Cuarón/Lubezki. Such elegant shots!

its crazy how smart and deeply integrated these guys are in their craft.
Vast understanding of the art for sure

@@StudioBinder Yes definitely.
Andrei Tarkovsky also framed his subjects through doorways, I'm glad we still see that today.
It's a great technique!
Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins are an Awesome Duo Filmmaker and DOP. By their inspiring work, they turn Movies into Masterpieces.
Love the Team Deakins podcast and this channel! Thanks for contextualizing their awesome conversations.
Glad you're enjoying the vids!
Roger and Villeneuve is a lethal combination.
The best combination!
An absolute pallet of differential beauty. I love this film so much not cause it embodies the horror of my inhabited culture but glorifies it through the frame. Ty Villeneuve & Deakins.
Denis Villeneuve is an awesome director of our time,he knows how to take out best acting from an actor.
And a master with special effects

Roger says one little scene, but actually those big scenes what makes that little scene impactful and powerful.
Good point, it all built up to increase the significance of the lighting
So much to learn from this channel, Keep up the hard work. Cheers to the team :)

His best film, indeed.
Two of my favourites and I loved the audio visual experience of Dune, it still had some problems but I can't wait for more.
Hopefully more to come 🙏
Breaking Bad was masterfully shot and helped tell the story visually as well. A good lesson in cinematography with that one.
Agreed!
One of my favorite duos in cinema, the other is fincher and sorkin. What about you guys?
Looking forward to many more with them
Same, also Nolan & Pfister, Leone & Delli Colli
Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg.

I honestly don't think of deakins as that big of a deal, I mean he's alright but certainly gets way too much recognition.
He gets as much recognition as the public and industry feel he deserves
