- of all the sketchbooks i've made over the years, this is by far my favorite one to make. not only i get to bring back a book(cover) that has long been out-of-print but with enough test-prints and estimation i can make it into any size that i'd like. i present to you, the "printable book-cover sketchbook".
in this video, i used shizen handmade watercolor paper for the pages and a print of a 1890 botanical book cover, "British Ferns" for the cover. the process is quite simple and straightforward that requires minimal book-binding skill and if you happen to have a scan of a book cover that you like, i hope you will give it a try.
as always, if you have any questions about the process, please let me know, i will be happy to help!
thanks so much for spending the time.

oOOH this is a great ideaa, to use an out of print vintage book as a cover. We just make sure that the books went out of print more than 70 years ago to make sure we don't violate copyright. This is a great way to renew life to pre-loved books.
Just about to sleep, great video for relaxing:)
sleep well
your videos are so amazing ❤️❤️❤️
I loved❤this video! Going to attempt to make something similar but that being said, you make it look so easy, when I try and duplicate what you videotaped mine ends up looking like Willy Wonka made it. Practice makes perfect but I won't ever be as great as you are, that's why I love purchasing from your online store. Thank you for sharing, have a wonderful weekend ❤~Gina~❤
Gina! thank you so much for always being so kind and supportive! i really hope you will give it a try. if you get stuck along the way or need any help at all when you try, please please let me know. i would be so happy if i could help
@lescargot.papier omgosh thank you so much that means the world to me. I can't wait to order more goodies from your store, forgot to mention I think it was my last purchase but it's a notebook with a embossed fern on the black book cover the inside has awesome dotted lines, but it was much larger than I thought and I'm in love with it! It's currently being used as my sketchbook, the paper is great because there are no bleed-through issues, and having the lines help make my lines more accurate ( I've been trying to sketch oriental temples) so a big thank you. Again thank you for your kindness in my future bookbinding I'm sure I'll be reaching out to you for a little guidance, I promise I won't pester you either. Take care my friend and have a great week.

Hi there, thank you for your videos. It's so relaxing and sparks my passion for bookbinding again. I have a question, how thick of a chipboard would you recommend for a sketchbook/ journal? I used to use chipboard for my sketchbook but it bent a little bit after applying some glue. Not sure if it's because of the moisture or the thickness of the chipboard. Would love to know what you think! ✨
Hi Celine, thanks so much for your kind words! I found the best chipboards for covers are the ones at the back of all Strathmore drawing pads. I don't know the weight of those so I can't tell you but when I run out of those, I use Cresent chipboard, the ones in this video. I found these chipboards on Blick's website (www.dickblick.com/items/crescent-chipboard-pack-5-x-7-pkg-of-40-sheets/), it's thinner, only 0.04" in thickness, so after gluing the covers I often let them dry flat over night and it seems to work in preventing wobbling.. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have other questions/concerns. Cheers, Yen.
Hello, I'm enjoying your videos. I do have a question I would love to sell packs of paper with beautiful photos but not sure how to start. Any suggestions. Thank you.
Have you made any notebooks with Tomoe River paper? As a fountain pen enthusiast I would buy as many A5 dot grid Tomoe River notebooks from you as I could!
i've never tried tomoe river paper because i don't think my local art store carries it but maybe one of these days.. :D
Oh, yay..a book cover made from scratch! I always wanted to see one... Btw what kind of paper did you use to print the cover?
i used Strathmore 64lb drawing paper. :D
The rounded needle, is it much easier to use, or was it the only one u could find around? Is it a good investment for book making?
I'm a bookbinder as well and in my opinion, it helps. curved needles decreases the hassle of flipping between pages/signatures while stitching. even then I'd say it isn't mandatory at the start itself. i invested on a pack of different sized, curved ones after 6 months only.
hi Farida, i found it easier for kettle stitch binding when i have to connect many signatures together but if i only have one signature, the regular straight needle works fine and might be easier.. so if you do a lot of multiple signatures binding i would say it's worth the try :D
What type of paper have you used for cover printing?
i used Strathmore 64lb drawing paper. :D
