For me "the dream is gone, but the baby is real" is my part lol. I am raising my 14-year-old son by myself. His mom and I both love The Smiths, so it hurts even worse because of that fact lol. Every song on this album makes me happy and depressed severely, simultaneously lol.

He seems to play the role of narrator and "inner voice" at the same time in most of their songs. Even when he moans it's sometimes funny and is all part of that inner voice role he's playing, like how he does the inner voice of a childish person in "You've Got Everything Now". He's good at showing pettiness and weaknesses of the human condition.

    Lyrics:
In a river the color of lead
    Immerse the baby's head
Wrap her up in the News Of The World
Dump her on a doorstep, girl
This night has opened my eyes
And I will never sleep again
You kicked and cried like a bullied child
    A grown man of twenty-five
Oh, he said he'd cure your ills
But he didn't and he never will
    Oh, save your life
    Because you've only got one
    The dream has gone
    But the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
    And I'm not happy
    And I'm not sad
A shoeless child on a swing
Reminds you of your own again
    She took away your troubles
    Oh, but then again
    She left pain
    So, please save your life
    Because you've only got one
    The dream has gone
    But the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
    And I'm not happy
    And I'm not sad

I tried getting into the smiths the other day, and from listening to the most popular tracks I decided they weren’t for me. But before I could put on something else, this track came on. I loved it! I’ve been listening to it on repeat all day, and i’ve decided to give the rest of the discography another chance because of it.

The Smiths are *the perfect band*. You've got a stellar vocalist with an off kilter but gorgeous way of writing and singing a song, a virtuosic guitarist that has carried the band and its sound, a smooth bassist with a great sense of groove to him, and to top it all off, a hard hitting drummer that wraps the song to a cozy little present. I love it.

RIP Andy Rourke. This song has been in my head since hearing, as the bass line really carries the song. The fact that Rourke was childhood friends with Marr is probably what made The Smiths' jangly chemistry so good. It's heart-shattering and soul-stripping to become a new father at the age of 8 in a tiny beach community like Itanhaem, Brasil in 1968 where no orphanages or adoption agencies existed to speak of. We left our tiny, baby girl in front of a nice-looking home, ran away as fast as we could, and never looked back, not even once. The love of my young life disappeared into Brasil's vagueness never to be heard from again. No one knew her real name. Somewhere out there I have a beautiful daughter who is only 8 years younger than I am. I ran out of all tears a long time ago. Could I even bear to meet her now? I honestly don't know. In a river the colour of lead
    Immerse a baby's head
Wrap her up in the News Of The World
Dump her on a doorstep, girl
This night has opened my eyes
And I will never sleep again
You kicked and cried like a bullied child
    A grown man of twenty-five
He said he'd cure your ills
But he didn't and he never will
    So, save your life
    Because you've only got one
    The dream has gone
    But the baby is real
Oh you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh you did a bad thing
    And I'm not happy
    And I'm not sad
A shoeless child on a swing
Reminds you of your own again
    She took away your troubles
Oh but then again she left pain
    So please save your life
    Because you've only got one
    The dream has gone
    But the baby is real
Oh you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
