I first went up this road in 1984, no sat nav in those days of course, I went up again about 25 years ago in terrible visibility, exciting to say the least, great video as always.
Very good video. This is everything that were taught by dad growing up. I do a lot of si gle track driving and there are two things that enfuriate me. Not allowing me to pass when I've been stuck behind you for several miles. And when you overshoot a pass g place and then cannot for the life of you get it reversed into the spot. I've gotten out and done if for people in the past. I've also reversed long distances back with a trailer because someone overshoot the spot by a few feet and fail to get it in. Pffff rant over. Awsome content.
Great video ... can we have more like this. Perhaps a more open road, like your “cornering revisited” on the Hatrside pass. I find it really helps me practice looking far ahead, assessing the corner speed, and identifying where off-siding is appropriate. Thanks!
Three years ago on "Scottish Overtakes" I asked, "And while you're up there what about the Pass of the Cattle to Applecross? ". So thank you. I drove the Pass of the Cattle first in 1974, after my high performance driving instructor suggested that I needed more experience. So for one drive I drove from London up to John o'Groats and back in a week. I used the roads that now form the '500. But this was before the advent of masses of two wheeled (powered/pedal) around to improve hazard awareness! And no camper vans or caravans. It looks like the road surface has got worse, so good comparison with India.
In April I was due my RoSPA renewal and in May was due to come over from NI to spend a week on NC500 , sadly “ The Rona” knocked that all on the head, these videos are helpful refreshers/improvers and I get to see one of the roads we intended travelling 🙂
Reg, Thank you for another excellent video. I have watched almost all of your films during my training towards a test (when they are available) and they have helped hugely. Perhaps not a subject for a whole video but during a future film it would be great if you could give some tips on car balance and control when negotiating steep downhill stretches of road, especially through bends, where braking is required because engine retardation alone is insufficient. At the very end of this video you drove such bends and that made me think of the issue, which I have experienced when on practice drives. Many thanks again for your excellent films and for both books, which I’ve read with interest!
Hey Reg. I’d love to know some of the routes you took on a number of your videos - such beauty! Would it be feasible to dump some of the GPS route information from your dashcam or be able to mark it on a map, please?
Hi Reg, a great video which was very informative. You gave me the tip, reusing the Sat Nav as a part of information gathering when I had a day with you back in March, and I can confirm I have since found it a very useful aid in driving unknown roads when it is linked to the other things you point out - such as road signs and scanning ahead. I did the Pass of the Cattle back in 2015 on a motorbike. Those two right-handers where you needed full lock at the end of your video immediately came to mind - I was coming the other way on a fully loaded motorbike so they were downhill, left landers, where the road to your left just seemed to slip away - heart-stopping but also fun!
Watching this on a low quality setting isn't the best as I can't see even a quarter of what is being pointed out when it is pointed out. I might be a little distracted by the scenery on top of that too. :) Edit; 16:04 Could have done with that warning about 20 seconds earlier before commenting. :)
No, come on Max - keep up at the back! Twice the distance. You need to take into account the stopping distance of the vehicles coming towards you on single-track roads as well as your own!
@@RegLocal You do need to "leave" twice the distance, which means you need to "stop" in half! You said (6:58) "you've got to double your stopping distance" (correct) but then followed at 7:00 with "you've got to stop in twice the distance you can see to be clear" sorry, pedantic i know! :-)
I so wish people would learn to use those narrow roads properly. People just drive down the middle around bends and have a huge panic when another car dares to be oncoming 👿 I remember my first lap of the Nurburgring, back before one could ‘virtually learn’ it. It was below freezing and the heavy sleet was starting to settle. I think I went SO slow I could stop in 1/10th of the road I could see to be clear 😂 Nearly my biggest driving fail 🤔 💩 🙈👀
Thank you for the video, Reg. Can we, maybe, get a video on driving on unfamiliar city roads too? I think it will be relevant for most drivers.
I second this.
IME most city drivers need to be shown how roundabouts work.
I would like to see a video on this too, did you find one?
@@nataliedebiase5089 specifically on that, no, I don't think so.

Thank you John I am learning a lot from your videos like I said earlier I intend taking my IAM exam and I think your videos have been a great help ..
Another informative video Reg, the drone footage was fabulous.

Great video Reg. Very well put together and informative. Love the drone shots near the end - stunning!
Fantastic route and another great video. Thanks!

A very nice drive Rog. Thanks
Wow. Those pedestrians were taking a bit of a chance at 24:04. Long way for emergency services to attend them.
Fantastic video. Thanks a lot.
So not just me who uses the sat nav as a guideline (and only as a guideline) then 😂 Great video Reg

Stick to your promises Reg! What was that mountain called?
Drove over this road in my little 1.0 Yaris with two of us, a full load of luggage, and two bikes on top. Don't think I got above second gear 😂.
Wow!
And another nice one - we all make slight errors when commentating - please don't say that you are getting old - not good for those older than you!
Should have put some midgey repellent on the windshield :)
Were you in GMP? Sure I've heard your voice on another video.

I don't think the hoot at the cyclists will be appreciated. No matter what you do they're never happy
