I’m an extremely extroverted person and love talking to people. I have no problems conversing and cracking lame jokes, but as soon as I have to follow some criteria of reading off of a paper or slideshow my heart just goes into overdrive and I can’t think when I speak. Usually I do fine but I still hate the feeling.

Me too. I tend to approach and socialize with a group of people. But as soon as i stand up in front of 15 or more people and have to make a speech, my lungs start losing air, the pitch of my voice goes higher, tongue feels heavier, and my mind goes through a complete breakdown because it notices that they are staring at me while I’m going through that horror. 😂
20 seconds later, i feel much better and i finish my speech with no problem.
My problem is just the first 20 seconds.

I don’t think you understand the feeling. Heart pounding, getting hot while it’s cold, ears hot and ringing, shaking (my hands). Mind you, I have to present tomorrow! In front of about 30 of my peers. I hate the fact i have speech anxiety it’s so embarrassing. Im 18 and never seemed to overcome it. I have my presentation ready but when I get on the stage I freeze. Gosh if I could, I’d take all my anxiety away. Literally crying rn because I have to present in a few hours but I’d rather skip out on school than do it.

This year I'm having 11 presentations and 1 of them is going to be a portfolio presentaion which I have no idea what is it but we will go in a giant classroom with chairs and I will have to present to 10 or more families and a few high schoolers. I'm rlly scared even tho it's in like a year or to, also I'm in 7th grade right now.

I feel extremely terrible when it comes to public speaking. I hear it is a common thing with many people. The funny thing is, however, i have never met anyone with this issue other than me. Therefore, either it isn't so common (and that would make me feel worse) or the extreme emotions within aren't that noticeable. Either way, this feeling of the lack of control sucks! this is not a scientific response, but there seems to be a loophole in my speaking anxiety. If I see or imagine someone who is way more anxious than I am, I take on the responsibility to calm them for the both of us. There's a person at school who shakes with anxiety when talking to people and somehow the compassion I feel towards them calms me, and I'm able to be calm talking to them and to others. IDK why or if this will work or you, but I'm just throwing it out there because it's immensely helpful to me

I used to stutter often, and then it reduced when I stopped trying to fix it. When you allow what you fear, the fear no longer has no control over you. Rigid beliefs of " I must not stutter" or "I absolutely must not make these mistakes", make us focus too much on what could go "wrong", and the fear then makes it harder to behave naturally, and authentically. When you make friends with your fears, they immediately stop being being fears.

Ima very outgoing and loving person and i love cracking dumb jokes with my friends in public and heck sometimes i even do something embarrassing but there's something i cant describe abt the certain type of anxiety that public speaking brings me. I had a previous traumatic experience while presenting earier this year that i think made me traumatized because i was totally fine before but ever since then i feel like all my confidence for public speaking has been taken away from me. its really affecting my mental health and i told my teacher but since this is a class for geting u ready for college his theory is that we have to practice public presenting now. So now hes forcing me to present unless i lose credit for the whole project which he graded 50/50 points for on google classroom. its so wack but i literally hate the anxiety that one event caused me.

Thank you for this video! I have a question, I'm a bit shy and when I talk to other people I tend to start talking faster and faster to the point that the other person can't understand a single word
What can I do to help me talk slower? I do this very often and It's something that I really want to change.

I used to talk a lot to people and do presentations very easily back in 2016, 2017... 2019. But suddently I started to have anxiety attacks every time I had to present something to more than 2 people. I don't think it's a panic attack because I don't feel like I'm gonna die. But I literally lose my breath and can't speak, it's ridiculous

I regularly hold meetings, but all of a sudden I can no longer make it through a meeting and have to quickly end it. I’ll start reading from my notes, then suddenly the words don’t come out, my voice goes shallow and I’m trying to push the words out. Then I get an overwhelming feeling of dread, and everyone is looking at me and noticing, then my eyes start to well up. It’s ridiculous and cannot understand why this now happens to me. I take CBD oil, Ashwagandha and I meditate. Does not help. I know it’s not ideal but I’ve started taking propranolol before a meeting, and am now cutting out coffee before holding a meeting. This doesn’t get rid of the anxiety but it enables me to finish my meetings. I will now try the breathing technique! Anyone else the same or have any other tips?

This might sound ridiculous but i just got a from home call center job & for now im in the training period. The problem is every time im asked to read something out loud for my team i lose it: i start shaking uncontrollably, i can't breathe in at all & i can't focus on what im reading thus making mistakes and stuttering. Idk why that happens because i have no issue of casually speaking with my team. Do you think this exercise will work in this scenario?

If you can control your breath then you can control the physiological symptoms of anxiety and that can have a direct impact on your psychological perceptions. Try it out!

My main issue is that I forget words and sometimes jumble them up, like I'll say something like 'speak it over' instead of 'talk it over'. I catch it and correct myself when I can and it's not too late, and usually I'm not speaking with a native English speaker so it's fine. It's a growing concern of mine. Maybe it's just having been surrounded by so many non-native speakers. Perhaps they've destroyed my English!

Im feeling so so lost... if anyone can help me by giving any helpful tip or diagnose me with something... you are more than welcome
I used to recite in my class, im the best student to do so, my teacher regularly asks me to help the weak students, im always reciting loud and clear , ive been doing so for 6 months, and have no difficulty in it, and enjoy doing so
But from the past 1 week, im insufferable, like im sitting fine, but whenever my teacher asks me to revite suddenly my heart beat is too high , i lose control , my mind goes blank, my body is sweating and shaking, my voice is heavy im on the verge of tears breathless and cant recite even 2 3 lines... its really embarrassing as well as shocking for me as this never happened before... im unable to recite now and feel extremely embarrassed so if anyone can tell me to do something to calm my heart down a bit so that i can have some air in my lungs to recite those 2 3 lines it will be super helpfull..
No i do not think what others think of me or that others are judging me

I don't know 90 percent of the people who will be there, so I am afraid of being judged. This is the anxiety and nervousness I get but I know ones I get started it will all go away, and everything will be fine.

I do well with presentations and public speeches because I love passing a message to the audience. However, tomorrow I'm gonna do a presentation for a larger number of people than I am used to, in a place where I'm only used to being in the audience, not on the stage. I am not an anxious person, I'm indeed really calm and chill but the more I think about tomorrow, the more unprepared I feel. I am afraid of forgetting everything.

I curtsied at the end of an internal job interview. I CURTSIED 🥴 i already work full time with this organization and part time with the department I interviewed for. I knew the interview panel and have conversations with them regularly. My thoughts and answers were scrambled eggs. I was goofy and weird because of my severe anxiety with public speaking and fear of not appearing competent. Enneagram 5 here!
After the interview, as I was replaying it over and over in my head, I realized I WAS THE ONE WHO CREATED THE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND PROCESS 2 years ago during a project to create this department… I don’t even want to show my face at work and am so disappointed in myself for fear I let them down with my poor performance. I am always complimented on my work ethic and job performance and received a stellar employee evaluation for the 5th year in a row. I already know the job and do it well. I am terrified that my poor interview performance will affect both areas of my job

Man i had to give a presentation today but didnt realize i prepared the wrong thing until i was in the classroom. Each person went up and had done their 3 min. Presentation and i was the last one. Knowing my presentation didnt follow the guidelines, i had to wing it and conform my presentation to the guidelines. I went up all nervous, heart pounding, and the minute i started talking i could hear my own voice. All i could focus on was my voice and had to look at my notes just to go back on track. To top it off, when i started to crack jokes noone laughed! I have never felt that nervous in my life. My instructor told me she didnt know why i was nervous, i presented well and that if i had prepared my presentation well in advance(mind you it was an prepared the prior day) that i wouldve killed it. At the end of the presentation, my nerves calmed down and realized i was overthinking it.
