    Great video. I grew up in Sierra Vista during the late 60's/early 70's. I've actually see helicopters catch these drones, while parachuting down, at the end of the test flights. They used to practice doing this on the East Range of Fort Huachuca near the big white gantry crane north of 7th street. The drones were painted bright orange so you could see the action as plain as could be from a mile or two away.

      That is so cool! Now drone operators do practice flights/landings near the airfield. I guess the days of catching drones with helicopters are gone, but it sure would have been interesting to see that.

    Great video. I had no idea there were drones in the 1960's. You learn something every day. Kudos for your persistence!

      Thanks! When I was reading up on it through some links on Leonard Taylor's website I especially liked learning that during the Vietnam war "...147NCs were used to drop propaganda leaflets. The project was codenamed Litterbug, but the troops called them 'bullsh*t bombers'." It makes me I laugh every time I think of it!

    I've hiked a lot of trails in Leonard Taylor's book too and I agree that trails on the Army base are not as well maintained as the National Forest trails but I'm still grateful to the Army to let us hike in here at all. The wilderness value of the trails on the base are very high partly because they are a little daunting. It really adds to your videos to put in some plants and animals such as the butterflies in today's video. Keep up the good work!

      Thanks for your comments. Over the three hikes and 21 miles to find the drone we saw no other people along the way. And you're right about the trails on Ft Huachuca. Joe always says, "It's not the Army's job to maintain trails. And they haven't!" To me the challenge adds to enjoyment.

    Awesome. BTW, mentioned you and Leonard Taylor at the end of my latest video of Coronado Cave. Posted a link to your channel in the description as well. Cheers. Dronetastic Voyage.

      Fortunately it doesn't sound like there were any growls coming out of Coronado Cave, unlike that thing that growled at you along Lutz Canyon. Thanks for the mention, and best wishes on your last assignment!

    I retired from the military from the Fort. Would you happen to know the gps coordinates to the crashsite. I want to hike up there and see if I can find it. I hiked up to Huachuca peak several years ago.

    • @karenflynnhikes
      @karenflynnhikes  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, I don't have the coords for the site. If you have the Trails of the Huachucas trail guide, the route to it is described in the Huachuca Peak Trail write-up. Having been there a few times I can say that the hike to it is easier via Lyle Canyon/Huachuca Peak Trails on the west side of the Huachucas. That west side route is faint in some areas, but the route starting on Ft Huachuca via Huachuca Canyon/Peterson Peak Trails is even more faint in various sections and it's much steeper. Good luck, it's an adventure!

    Did you happen to get grid coordinates on where the drone is?

    • @karenflynnhikes
      @karenflynnhikes  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but I don't want to post the coordinates here. If you have the Trails of the Huachucas trail guide it does a pretty good job of describing the location. I think it's in the Lyle Canyon section of the guide, but I don't have the guide in front of me right now so it's possible it's in another section.
