It's a fixed spool diff that only grips to accelerate and won't cause the front wheels to brake only the rears giving you a Handbrake effect when you brake... Similar to the one in a engine pullstart so it grips the crankshaft then lets it spin freely once running or to get the chord back in to pull again ;O)

It was there because it had snow outside and the snow from the shoes melted ;) On dry ground the car slides just as well as on wet ground! :)
