IIRC, there was a certain logic to losing a few of the better US units right off, so you did not lose them from replacements on cards. They fight better so they can more likely inflict losses right off as well.
I would in particularly like to see a difference in bomber and fighter units and a nuclear weapons release on cities, which I believe in the Russian or Asian alliance force would happen on certain cities to cause strategic chaos to weaken defense resolve . likely cities like New York would be hit like this first strike, only if infiltrating personal were place to stall a response .

you retreated a yellow attacker, when the US defender rolled, and that infantry should have retreated to an adjacent territory
