    I just realized that Al and Earn walking away could be perceived as 'cutting off' their [toxic] family member. They can't look back, not even a glance, and she won't see them unless they turn around.

    • @angiespurs5773
      @angiespurs5773 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, if she's as evil as her own siblings believe she is then she will continue to feed off them. If Al and Earn turn around, it would be due to interest in what's going on.
      But why should they care? Doesn't look like they were too involved in caring about what was going on with their granddaddy to start with.
      I thought it was interesting that they never mention Al's mom. Was she a sibling or connected by marriage?

    I think the verse is the one in the wrong. Both sisters can be understood as having attempted to steal their father from each other. Neither came to steal, to kill nor to destroy. The situation is not as simple as the verse paints all thefts to be.

    I have a feeling that the Shmurda exit and the whole idea of Earn and Al having to walk away from family and not look back is gonna be significant to how the show ends. I think they've hinted at least a few times that Al could be heading for an untimely death (Blueblood, crank dat killer), and we've seen Earn talk about his job offer in LA which could mean having to leave Van and/or Lottie. Apart from how it could connect to later episodes I think this scene also beautifully portrayed the idea that some people are just so toxic that you can't just excuse their actions because they're family (really interesting now that we know Earn was abused by a family member) and sometimes the best thing for your own good is to just walk away and not turn back

    Maaan I really been enjoying the reaction videos and been waiting on this one cause I really love this episode as much and the breakdown. Idk if I’m reaching but the scene with the kid begging for a pic with Earn’s Dad saying “you want me to beg, pops?” felt like a take on how some kids from this generation will do anything for clout just like how you see the young girls twerking in the middle of mall with no shame for tik tok or whatever. Also kinda shows how the youth is actually hurt & this is how they act out on there trauma especially when there is no father figure to look up in the household, idk just felt like a cry for help from that kid.

    Man, i don’t know why I haven’t thought of it before- but “father, father why have you forsaken me” works in multiple levels this episode. Earn’s dad forsaken him for his day off, Gloria has been forsaken by her father in the past and the auntie feels forsaken by Gloria’s attempt to fix her own forsaking. And Al and Earn (justifiably) deciding to forsake their snitch aunt. That punk didn’t give up on humiliating Earn’s dad, Earn’s dad didn’t give up on what was promised. While trying to sneak away from Gloria’s blaming him on his spending.

    I think this is my fave episode of the season. Its not high stakes. Not super trippy. Not a huge adventure in the lives of Earn and Al. But man I like that its grounded. I like that its a relatable look at a family. Conflicted, arguing, but a family still. Sad that theres no resolution aside from Earns mom getting grandpa back but then again, I think thats the point. Irl these things dont have neat and tidy issues like classic tv shows. Where everyone makes up and long standing beef is over with. The religious Christian ideas I think were used nicely not only as a neat reference but to show how it seeps and is a major part of life especially for African Americans even if you’re not the most religious. Even in something as mundane as “dont look back”. Is there a greater meaning in that? I think the theming is simply there.

    I'm glad you're back mucking with these breakdowns! Easily the best on youtube lol This episode in particular I was waiting for you to touch on because it felt like there was a lot to unpack.
    I had 3 takeaways:
    1) Earn's Aunt Jeanie is likely a reference to Lightskin Aunt Viv from The Fresh Prince whose character in that show was altered drastically after the recast following Janet Hubert's leave. Similarly here, Jeanie starkly contrasts her other darker skin siblings and acts more like the white Karen of the family (fragility, calling cops, centering herself, nastiness, etc). "I hate you cuz you're evil" is a hilarious takedown of the tragic mulatto trope and points out what blindspot Auntie Karen has from her lightskin privilege.
    2) The church mimes are yet another visual representation of the race-swapping juxtapositions that are common in the series. It's a direct callback to Tobias Walner of S1E6 aka the white face boy. It's an indirect reference to S3's blackface Zwarte Piet crowd and the general theme of "Black Skin, White Masks" that was prevalent throughout (also, Nileseyy Niles in the BAN episode). Auntie Karen is the embodiment of Black skin with a white mask. If you read Frantz Fanon's book of that name, it will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation of the themes and symbolism of this show.
    Related: clown makeup and hair 🤡 is tied up with American minstrelsy.
    3) 12:04 In addition to those references, the "passages" and "not looking back" aspects that you sharply pointed out could also symbolize the Middle Passage of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. As Black people, we technically can't look back due to white supremacy and chattel slavery erasing our ethnic identity. There is no return to our ancestral lands in Africa in any meaningful way because where the hell is that? But in moving forward they did escape from Auntie Karen
    Also, the girl pointing out the Shmurda exit looks biracial too, maybe Blasian, for whatever it's worth 🤷🏿‍♀️ It felt like the entire episode was various commentaries on colorism and how whiteness had infiltrated and influenced the Black community in insidious ways. A big one yet subtly played in this episode is Christianity itself and how the religion has been used as a tool of colonization, but that's an overly long comment for another day lol

    • @lowtech42
      @lowtech42 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Color symbolism:
      Yellow = yellow bone/high yella, both terms of southern origin for lightskin Black people in our community. It's linguistic counterpart is "redbone" referring to lightskin Black people with a warmer/more reddish complexion and Childish Gambino fans already know about the song of that name 🔴🦴
      Yellow when contrasted with Blue of both Earn's relatives harken back to Yemaya and Oshun, the sister deities of the Yoruba and offshoot religions of the African diaspora. Oshun in particular is water or literally translated to "source", where life is drives from. Water played a prominent role in the season prior too. These references can get DEEP so I'll leave it there lol

    - I loved seeing Gunna’s cameo appearance in this episode. The last time I seen him was in the first season of Dave where him and Thugga shared a joint together with Dave.
    - The Space Jam: A New Legacy poster on the touch screen inside of the mall was cool as hell. Plus, the actor who plays Tracy on Atlanta played LeBron’s manager in the movie and was funny as hell in the role.
    - Uncle Willie making another appearance in this show was humble and fresh to see. So I’m guessing Uncle Willie got away from the cops in the end of the episode to season two of the show.
    - Earn’s mom was dead ass wrong for talking shit about Earn’s hair, abandoning Earn at church with his Karen ass auntie, and trying to complain with the restaurant employee over some bread which is not that important.
    - I felt Earn’s pops pain due to getting roasted about the new fedora hat he just purchased. As well as getting checked about his size appearance. That is some shit that would have ready to run the 1s on someone for being out of pocket. But in life you have to pick and choose your battles. And pops’ attitude at the end of the episode at the restaurant is something I can relate to. The man wants to have a simple meal with his family and enjoy the remainder of his Sunday.
    - Al/Paperboi playing a game of UNO with Gunna was fun and gives off vibes on how it feels playing cards with good friends. And yes, no yellow cards is as sad as someone making another Draw 4.
    - The “Don’t look back” moment in this episode was as similar as a samurai in training having to walk thru a narrow path blinded folded thru a room full of lions and snakes.
    In all, I have enjoyed the widow and is one of my other favorite moments of this season to Atlanta. This along with Earn breaking down and crying in his therapy session, Al asking Earn how has been recently, and Earn’s patience being tested while looking and channeling D’Angelo’s whereabouts in the back of Rally’s/Checkers.

    I think the part about Earn’s Dad being a harassed in the mall is just telling of how younger generations have no real respect for older people that they don’t know that I’ve probably lived a life out for duty or respect.
    Like Why his mom wanted the bread which to my assumption viewers probably didn’t care for. In my own opinion I wouldn’t care if I didn’t get bread if I was in that position but with that point but as his mother said “if everyone else got bread why shouldn’t we get it”

    • @donbarnett1553
      @donbarnett1553 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His DAD was disrespected.
      His MOM was being an ass!
      Her behavior was comedic because we ALL have (or know of) someone like this in our own family.

      I’m so split on this. I think the bread situation was annoying but when you use the word “Nurturing” it really does make sense that Earns mother is still trying to teach him to always get what he paid for. We paid to break bread, so give us the damn bread.
      The split in opinion is why I love the show.

    Hey Nine, I don't know if someone has commented this already but when Earn is in the Curch and Priester is preaching John 10 Verse 10 it is a reference to the Malcolm X movie directed by Spike Lee. In the scene a Priest is preaching the same Verse and Malcolm gets up and corrects him on the skincolor of Jesus's deciples.

    The COLORS in this episode represents the different IDEOLOGIES in the Afro family and is the cause of all the arguments and separation. Gold, blue, red and even the mentioning of “Egypt”. Even dealing with the gang community is not over colors persy but different ideologies. Christianity, Kemet(Egypt) and gangs(colors) seems to be the pro dominant ideologies amongst the Afro community.
    Gold represents the Kings/High Priest. Even though nobody likes auntie she was still telling the truth and being responsible. Kat Williams and Paperboy wore blue and gold.
    Red and blue represents Gods two angles or Shu(blue) and Tefnut(red); order and chaos.
    Red(chaos) shows up in the mall with the unruly kids.
    Blue represents order and law.
    A lot can be broken down in this episode about the colors used and the ideologies/religious overtones in which is a big problem in the Afro community which is a big cause of a lot of arguments fights even violence also the cause of a lot of division. It also seems to totally abandon religion/culture also ends in chaos.
