Hi John thank you so much mate. Kids are the best. I love kids. I am a volunteer for the Make A Wish foundation. I wanted to do something to give back... and it was always going to something to do with kids. LOL
You got absolutely spoiled in that mailtime segment Robbie, especially the handmade kookaburra and the spinnerbaits. I agree with your thoughts about native fish not spawning in lakes! Great video as always mate.
Some cod may spawn in small numbers in lakes, but yebblies and other maquaria genus perch and silvers tend to spawn when the rains arrive. They naturally spawned in flood waters, and the fry would eat all the microbes and small bugs that came from rotting vegetation and stuff in the flood waters. As the flood waters receded, the fry would get washed back into the rivers and billabongs, but had put on size and strength from their early smorgasbord. Now, with flood mitigation and damming of the rivers, there is never true flood flow, the floods are "small" and managed and they do not last long. Yellowbelly, in particular, are migratory fish, and used to swim upstream to congregate at the highest barrier they could reach, and form large spawning groups. Now, there is a barrier every 100 miles with dams, lochs and weirs. This is why removing the carp would be a tragedy, as they are one of 2 major species that natural spawn in the artificial environment WE created. the other being redfin. It is easy to blame them for the damage, but it was our activities, not carp, that did this. Removing them removes the only NATURALLY recruited, self sustaining food source for our natives. Natives without carp will starve and eat other. Something to remember...
@@jeffysmith8253 Thanks Jeffy. People hear so many myths about the evil carp, I am determined to bring some balance to the equation. I have killed my share, back when I was unthinkingly parroting the sentiment, but empirical observation and a little thinking outside the propaganda has meant I have not killed a carp in 20 years. I have observed carp in crystal clear waters, grubbing in the silt. THe silt generally falls straight back to the substrate. This is often seen as "putrifyin the water" but is in fact beneficial. Silt builds into very thick layers if allowed to sit undisturbed. Being so fine, it settles into a barrier between the water and substrate. The substrate cannot exchange gases effectively and methane, sulphur gases, ammonia and nitrogen build up in the anaerobic environment, as the bacetria that are required to neutralise these gasses are oxygen dependent. Catfish served the same purpose, and flood flows when they occured washed the silt away to the lower reaches of the rivers, where it fertilised the mangroves, and out to sea. Carp used to be placed into moats to prevent stagnation of the otherwise still waters. There aer many rumours and urban myths that persit, but they have no more veracity than the myth goldfish have a 3 second memory.
Thanks for passing on that murry cod spawning information to us Rob. Your knowledge and the way you explain it is priceless for our kids. These kids relate to you.

I agree with you I reckon they should close lake Eildon for the cod I know there is heaps in there but how many don't spawn. Pretty sure lake mokon was like that as well cod season was open for cod that's why the numbers was so low there. wish the eastern states would release more water into the South Australian part of the Murray System, not to long ago the lower lakes was at an all time low on the amount of water that was entering the lakes and the mouth of the murray was needing dredging just so water could exit, if more water was allowed down the river system and into South Australia it also might help our native fish stocks like cod whos stocks are lower then the eastern sates (mainly because the south australian part of the murray barely ever floods due to water not coming down the river)
Do not lame the Eastern States, blame the corporate farms, mining and politicians too corrupt and looking out for themselves. Believe me, in the "eastern states" we are struggling with the same crap.
@@AndrewFishman unfortunately its become a very political thing, when i say the eastern states i mean the governments, the farming secter in particular the rice and cotton farms give the governments too much money and unfortunatly the outcome of that is a very unhealthy lower Murray ecosystem

"These are not the worms you are looking for..." Local worms are best, even better if collected and stored in local earth. Worms are all very different, some being almost totally useless as bait as the segment themselves (detach pieces when injured) and fall apart, or some secrete awful smelling, sticky goo as a defence. So, using worms that you know the type is beneficial. Keep any worms you have left over, throw them in a worm farm and breed your own. And just as a bonus FYI - Well fed worms catch more fish than unhealthy worms. I find worms particularly good near flow ins, and close to the bank, this is where fish expect to find them.
