I've done twice in a Honda CRV when I lived in Homer. Fortunately, it was dry both times. I've seen much worse. Just don't be tempted to speed up much, as there are a few jarring bumps along the way, with little to no warning.
watching you two cooking was fun, but as a retired civil engineer who worked primarily on roads and bridges, i really appreciated that portion of your wonderful video... thank you again.
Thanks for the memories again. After the Dalton Highway video I discovered this one. As an Australian I came to San Francisco and bought a 1969 VW campervan in 1988 and drove it up to Alaska and I also took this road to McCarthy. Back then there was nobody else in that area which is now a car park. In order to get to McCarthy it was necessary to cross two rivers with a flying fox contraption for one person only and you had to haul yourself across. McCarthy was a cute bygone relic of a town and the magnificent mine buildings were amazing to wander around with those impressive views over the glacier. The trestle bridges were truly amazing as well and it inspired me to build an HO scale wooden trestle bridge for my train club back in South Australia. Once again your narration was superb and I also make hommos like you. I also remember feeding off a salmon which I caught for four days. Wonderful experiences for an Australian guy.
That is so cool. Maybe you saw in the video that the cable is still there for the old "pull-yourself-across" method of crossing the bridge. We're curious - did McCarthy and Kennecott look a lot different than they do now? Or more or less the same?
@@ArtWeThereYet Hi, thanks for responding and I will continue to watch your journey to Ushaiai with anticipation. You may also perhaps ask me for some advice and possible great places to visit while you are your way. Feel free to ask.Oh! I did not see the old pulley system in the video, only the pedestrian bridge. I will look again. There were no shuttle buses back then. I only remember walking to McCarthy and up to the mine. It was raining quite heavily on the first day in McCarthy on my first day there so I spent a time at the olf general store where I ate. As I recall I did not see any tourist shops or museums back then, mostly old buildings in disrepair. It's good what they have done to it to improve facilities for the few tourists who make the effort to go there. The old mine was interesting back then with paperwork strewn about the place. No tours and no helmets back then and I had the place all to myself just wandering around from top back to the bottom. I followed this up with a wonderful small aircraft afternoon flight over the glacier and surrounding mountains, awesome indeed! I also remember trying to wash my hair in that very cold glacier water, it made my head ache. The whole McCarthy experience was fantastic. It was half my lifetime ago, in fact the entire North American and South American was a half a lifetime ago and in my early seventies the adventures and experiences of that journey remain so strong in my mind and I think about many of those experiences constantly which you will surely do too once you get to my age.
WOW!!! I love your content...incredibly interesting video and drone shots combined with narrative and an amazing sound track! You two capture the cache of Alaska like no other has ever done! I can hardly wait to see what they mined in McCarthy. Thanks so much for all of your hard work... it is so much appreciated. P.S.....I loved the cooking portion of this adventure as well! Much love to you both....Bob
I had visited Alaska about two weeks ago and made the drive to McCarthy just about a week ago. We opted for a shuttle ride into McCarthy and stayed a night at the Kennicot Lodge. The tour of the copper mine was fascinating, as was the hike out to the glacier. Watching your video only stoked some fresh memories of our trip. The road wasn't as bad as we anticipated, but then again, that was more of an issue for our shuttle driver. :) Thanks for all of the wonderful content you continue to create from Alaska.....it was your videos that pushed us to visit Alaska (especially our time in Seward).
Oh wow, that is a huge compliment!!! So happy you got to see McCarthy/Kennecott, and also SEWARD! Hope you got a little sunshine and not just all rain!

Wow, you got some incredible drone footage! With the road winding in and out of the national park, we were leery about flying ours much along the road.
Thank you! Yeah it was tricky figuring out the boundaries between the national park and the private land, we actually looked at maps to figure out our shots in advance, to make sure we weren’t breaking rules.
An absolutely beautiful video!❤ So interesting and what a picture of Beauty… mI just got home from my second trip to Alaska and it certainly is the last frontier ❤
Interesting dynamic through the videos. It seems like you are there to disconnect from the world and reset with nature, but it feels like you spend more time in your van and on screens than with nature. I love the driving pics and cinematography, but it feels more like a cooking and van channel.
Hey there, welcome to the channel! We invite you to look around and check out some more videos! This is actually the most of our "inside the bus" life that we have shared in a video in quite some time.
Hi ! I m a new subscriber ! Your videos are very interesting to me ! why ? Well. i m a french Canadian from Quebec and was a highway trucker for 35 years, now retired, i ve been trucking all over Canada, Yukon and NWT. but never in the USA. So that s why i m so amazed by your adventures ! I do have some videos, but they re very bad quality and no editions ! lol. My best trucking experience was moving to Edmonton, Alberta and trucking mostly in BC. AB. Yukon and Northwest Territories ( yellowknife ). for 10 years, before going back home in Quebec. So, I ve been in many Oilfield plants in Alberta, and oilrigs in the woods ! lol ! now that was rough roads, accessible mostly in winter ! In summer it would be too soft, muddy and not recommanded. Sorry if i misspell some words, i m french and learned English from watching TV and interacting with english people ! I did the same with Spanish travelling in Mexico for 1 year, i know many words but not enough to understand people talking ! lol ! 😋🤠Love you guys ! will follow your next vids !
Less garlic!?!?!? You really cannot overdo fresh garlic in hummus. Looks delicious. As for the road, I first drove it in 1981, in the rain. No flats! The days of the pull yourself across the river in a cablecar are gone. Likely safer with the pedestrian bridge, but it was such an adventure then. Thanks for the update and cool summary!
@@ArtWeThereYet It was indeed a great adventure. Four people, four bicycles, various luggage pieces hanging off, and you still had to pull yourself across that raging silty river. 🥵

Yes, that definitely would be the challenge for this trip. You actually have to plan well even for gas/diesel vehicles. There is no fuel station in McCarthy - only Chitina!

A lot of ak has underkept roads and they can be dangerous because they are under kept and often go yrs without maint.
That’s what we hear! It must be almost an impossible job though, keeping up with the development of frost heaves every winter.
Not a big challenge - the terrain is mostly level!
Why are you wearing touqes inside? No heat?
The challenge depends on the kind of vehicle you are driving, it’s not the same to get a flat on a pickup truck than on a school bus 😆
And yes, we do have heat in the bus, but we like to be toasty warm 🙂
You are supposed to lower your tire pressure on those conditions.
We went with our shop’s recommendation, which is 110psi, where we try to always keep them.
