I've put this on my "Christmas" favorites list. This episode, and "Meet Me at the Bar Mitzvah", have got to be the two sweetest episodes of Car 54. Just about everyone "stole the show". I saw this episode when I was a seven year old kid, and loved it, even understanding the subdued "back to the job" ending. It's great seeing it again!
This episode is quite a departure from the usual Car 54, but many shows of the era had "Christmas specials." And the Car 54 version didn't disappoint. Long-time Nat Hiken collaborator Terry Ryan penned the script. And, yes, that is really Paul Reed singing his lyrics in "I Am The Captain Of The 53rd." In fact, all the songs were sung by the actors during filming (and Gwynne does, in fact, play the guitar.) Alice Ghostly's song, "Irving," was written by series creator Nat Hiken.
I love them all too...but I found 'AMan Is Not An Ox' the funniest episode I've seen. However this one is brilliant...but do you remember 'Boom Boom Boom'?
I don't remember this episode but was 11 when it aired and probably watched it. I am impressed with the many accomplished character actors in this old show. They clearly had plenty of experience in show business and some could really perform musically! There are a few current shows with truly talented ensemble casts, but not many.
I see some comments complaining that this isn't a Christmas show because no holiday songs were sung. They forget that the heart of the show is humanity. The officers and residents of the 53rd precinct have their shortcomings, but they try to do right by each other. Given the precinct's religious diversity, it would be callous to subject everyone to songs that might not reflect their beliefs. Instead, the 53rd brought joy to the people they served with free entertainment that lifted their spirits. It is a beautiful message of peace on earth and good will to all. It is a Christmas message.
Also around this time there defiantly wasn’t as many Christmas song as now I’m not sure how many they did have. But anyways this show still felt christmassy too, cuz this is the kind of stuff people in workplaces do before the holiday, just let loose and have fun. Also the reason you said. I listen to a lot of old time radio shows and some Christmas specials aren’t really big with the Christmas song (prob cuz songs were on the radio back then the majority of the time. But even some themes are just set at Christmas or it’s barley mentioned, but its still most always being something different from the regular episodes and they still have a different feeling about them. maybe that was the way then.I was born in the 80s so I wouldn’t know too much
Great show and memories. These shows were filmed down the block from where I lived at the Biograph Studio located at 807 E. 175th St in the Bronx. The front of the precinct was actually the front entrance to the studio 😀🙏

It's actually based on the Operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan. The song was Captain of the Pinafore. More likely Mercury and Queen used that as their inspiration.
didn't the Dingbat write that song, Your nobody until somebody loves you" when she wrote the song and Archie bought the gun instead and they were robbed by the kid from Sanford and Son....lol
Great acting..great singing..great show!
Fantastic episode, and incredible ending....a startling dose of somber realism that not even any of the other episodes have.
Yes the ending was sad.....

Wow. Some of the best television of all time!
The ending was perfect. Crimes unfortunately never take the holiday off, and so neither does the police.
This was a good one. Lots of talent on this show.
Wonderful. Charming.
Maybe the best episode of the series - and that's saying something, considering how great this show was.
I love them all too...but I found 'AMan Is Not An Ox' the funniest episode I've seen.
However this one is brilliant...but do you remember 'Boom Boom Boom'?
thank you for these Car 54 videos. i can not tell you how much i enjoy them . thank you again
Alice Ghostley doing "Irving" steals the show! She's just great!
Wasn't the magic act guy Carl Ballantine (Gruber) from McHale's Navy?
Yes he is
I met him once at a supermarket when he was waiting for a taxi. He held me spellbound for 10 minutes with his show biz stories and observations.
A comedy classic, this series !!
This was always my favorite Car 54 episode, and I haven't seen it in so long. Thank you for posting it!

Excellent episode of Car 54 Where are You !

So give a cheer and not the bird to the hearty captian of the 53rd.
This was great! Much better than I expected.

Incredible episode.
Loved this
Simple, honest, times. it was really nice the cast getting to show their other talents.
I love Car 54. I don't usually watch Christmas episodes. This one reminds me why- they're corny. But the rest of Car 54 is awesome.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing!
I am addicted to "Car 54, Where Are You?"...soooo funny.
Me too.
When a comedy was really a comedy.
This episode is like a Vaudeville show.
Carl Ballantine always great
Wonder how many people today know that the captain is singing a parody from the HMS PENEFORE
No note of Muldoon's parody from Pirates? ;)
Yep!!!
Great to see Fred Gwyn.
The lady singing "Irving" went on to be on the Bewitched show as a clumsy witch who tried to cook.
I never knew Alice Ghostley could sing.
She really couldn't but she sold the comic song!
It's Grandpa and Herman Munster.

holy fuck brings bk alot of memories ty.
Now we know where Freddy Mercury and Queen got their inspiration!
It's actually based on the Operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan. The song was Captain of the Pinafore. More likely Mercury and Queen used that as their inspiration.
What a wonderful time this was - everyone respected the police, people dressed up to go out, children obeyed their parents. We’ve lost so much.
wait grandpa monster and Herman was on this show ! wow!
More than just one black guy in the cast. Early 60's heresy. What a great show. Needs a revival.
It wouldn't be the same. You can't bring our world back to 1961 sensibilities.
Herman and grandpa Munster wow
Any chance of Season 1 Ep 3 "Home Sweet Sing Sing" cant find it anywhere :(
Aunt esmerelda!!
What an old HAppy program
I didnt know nipsy russle was in car 54!!!!

So sad. The Bronx was wonderful and the liberals destroyed it.

Christmas show has nothing to do with Christmas - that has to be another joke.
In our opinion this episode had nothing to do with Christmas.
Love the show, but this is the worst Christmas episode of any sitcom of its day. No Christmas or holiday songs were sung at all.
