@@simonedgbaston OMGosh, Simon. please do yourself a gigantic favor and set yourself off on a Greg Lake odyssey. His music has been a huge part of my life. He is so profound. ELP was and still is my fave musical group of all time. Even my dad liked to listen to them with me (Brain Salad Surgery, not so much... Haha!)
@@simonedgbaston. I am in a far worse situation. I was around when King Crimson and ELP were born. I never heard of KC and wrote off ELP as a wannabe YES band because of the beginning cords of From the Beginning. I was a huge YES fan and in my stupidity thought that there was only room for one progressive rock band. If you are young, don’t make the boneheaded mistake I made! If it weren’t for TH-cam making a recommendation, I wouldn’t know about Greg Lake. From him I “rediscovered” ELP but the shock for me is Greg’s tenure in King Crimson. His vocals on In the Court of King Crimson are unmatched, in my opinion. Listen to one of the videos where they have isolated his voice singing Epitaph. You will be amazed.
what a memory - I was a 20 year old flight attendant in 1977 when ELP, the biggest supergroup ever thus far, was doing their huge worldwide tour. My roommate had tickets for the show in St. Louis and was so excited! She had to fly one flight the day of the show - and sure enough, she had ELP on her flight. She told them she had tickets and hoped to bring one of her 6 flight attendant roommates. (yes, 7 flight attendants in their 20's in a 3 bedroom apartment) They invited us ALL! Since the concert was sold out, we freaking sat on the STAGE! and went to dinner with them after! It was surreal, to be sure. I told Keith that I was from Malibu, near L.A. and he shared his love of riding a harley through Topanga Canyon! Yup, I had done so many times. Greg was fascinated with one roomie, Carl with another, and Carl's karate instructor, who traveled with them, even showed up at our apartment and made us all dinner. Ahhhh, pretty terrific memories!
This just tore me apart. I owe everyday I've lived since Sept.14th 1980 to Greg and this one song. I was 18 years old and watched helplessly as my Mother was consumed by cancer. I promised God that if he wanted her so badly he could have me too. I had a souped up Corvette that I bought from playing in a band 4 nights a week from when I was 16. ELP inspired me to become a musician. I lived in a mountain town in Utah. There was a high mountain pass with a big cliff on the other side. I had measured a gap between the boulders and had already determined my car would fit between them. The night my Mother died I went and played one last night with my band. Played and sang Lucky Man on my acoustic for my last song, got in my car and drove to the top of the pass. I wanted to hear ELP one last time and popped in a cassette. Closer to Believing came on first thing. It felt like Greg was talking directly to me when he sang "if your journey's unrewarded may your God lift up your heart". I don't remember doing it, but apparently I got out of my car and walked home. The sheriff found my car idling at the top of the pass and brought it home the next day. I've played nearly 10,000 shows since then. I never got famous but I always tried to reach whoever was listening the way Greg has always spoken to me. Thanks Greg!
Such a remarkable human being. He has been an inspiration to me for over 50 years. I wish so much that I would have known him, even for just a moment. That moment would last me forever.
Greg was an angel who went down on earth to gift us with his great music and mesmerizing voice! How grateful I am to be able to listen to him still present today. He will be forever missed, and of course Keith Emerson too! 💔❤️
Greg Lake was the consummate poet, lyricist, musician, writer, artist. Absolute mastery of craft. And, yes, that voice. That voice. "Closer To Believing" is my absolute favorite Greg Lake song and has been since I was 17 - and that's a good long while ago. I am so glad that there are others who feel the same way about this masterpiece of songwriting. Every word, every line speaks to the fiber of my soul - and rare is the time that I hear it that I don't choke up. Something about it. Unquestionably, if there is ONE song that means a great deal to me - it's this one. At the very top of the list. The. Very. Top.
What a beautiful rendition of this song. I have loved Greg Lake for many, many years. I just recently turned 60 & I’ll have to admit that I go weak in the knees when hearing his fine, manly & mature voice. Although no longer with us, I am certain he’s being well cared for....God has always blessed the music makers. I hope he left knowing what a treasure he is & how grateful we are that he shared his life & music with us all. Thank you Greg Lake. You hold a special place in our hearts.
"So be closer to believing, though your world is ripped apart. For one moment changes all things, as to end is but to start. And if your journey's unrewarded, then may God lift up your heart -- You are windblown, but you are mine."
Wow! I didn't know this particular version! Achingly beautiful, Greg! Wherever you are now, do believe a certain Portuguese lady - me! - will always remember you! ♥
Although I never met him, I feel as if I knew Greg. I don't think I've cried this hard since I heard about his passing. Then as I watched this video, when I saw the pictures of him & his wife, Regina, I cried even harder. My heart goes out to her as she must truly miss him more than us fans can imagine. RIP dear Greg. Thank you for the lifetime of your music.
This is just so sweet, I can't wait to be able to experience the beauty of his music once again, and to read the words of his friends and loved ones! Greg is my favorite musician and to see his legacy being carried on like this is so wonderful!🧡🌻
Greg, you were one very inspirational lyric writer, this song written with Pete Sinfield, this song is inspirational and beautiful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are very much missed and your genius music/songwriting lives on and will do forever more
Beautiful lyrics powerful music. As a child of the 70's I wish I had a time machine to have experienced at least one of their magical live concerts. Thank you for this.
Someone asked Greg Lake what song he would leave in a time capsule if he could only leave one thing he would be remembered for and he said "Closer to Believing". This was from his website where he was answering fans' questions.
wow this was emotional, thank you for touching me and everyone else. R.I.P. my long lost friend you've been part of my life since 1972 when I was 9 years old and listened to my older brothers new record for the first time, but never the last time.
I think of ELP and the music Greg brought to us all. But, I also think of the music that was not brought to us because he left earth. He was one of a kind.
"Trilogy" was the very fist Album I bought with my own hard earned money! I was So Stoked and I thank ELP for giving me My Rock-N-Roll running Shoes. All these years later I Strut rather than Run...but I do so in a Groovy Glow knowing I was alive to Share The Air with Greg Lake and the rest of ELP. I shall Keep Strutting till my music stops....Stay Strong All.....Cheers!
Great pics of Greg!! It's a shame he lost his voice, but he did pull this one off 100%!! I love you, Greg!! You are ALWAYS in my heart!!! ❤❤⚘ Rest in Peace⚘ ❤❤
Greg Lake was definitely meant to have been here From the Beginning...he's not really gone while his words voice and guitar solos flow like a river when his music continues to be played...god bless Greg Lake.😊
There are no words in this planet to correctly describe how good is the voice of this great singer echoing triumphantly over the mountains, singing this angelical and at same tme haunting song....Wherever the place he is now this man is singing and playing with the angels spreading this music over the nature like a god he is transformed after his passing...We really deserve more time with this great guy, but the destiny stole him from us...Truly miss him and Emerson too, hope they can play and get together on the other side...Their work will inspire me and guide me till the rest of my life and will live forever in my heart and in my thoughts, because vibration and energy never cease and will stay in the universe till the end of time.....And I am TImes....!! Love to you all
I was really interested to hear what Greg had done with this re recording this track. I feel its one of the best things of Works, along with C'est la Vie and Lend your love to me tonight. As others have noted, regrettably the choir boy voice of the 70s and early 80s left Greg but his guitar work was still impeccable. I'm not sure f he is also doing the guitar solo but its a beautiful arrangement- sufficiently different from the lush orchestral version- it does make me rather sad that we never got a solo album that focused on his troubadour capabilities- a sad loss but I still love listing to the body of work he left.
Amazing, better than the original version. Keith and Greg, I grew up with your music and what a legacy you left us. I doubt if we will ever see the likes again of a great band like Emerson lake and palmer, RIP chaps. 👍🇬🇧
Thank You Greg for your beautiful music and angelic voice, and thank you for inspiring me to learn guitar. There will never again be such a beautiful voice in music. No wonder Keith and others called you The Voice. I will always love you and your music. Enjoy another day in paradise singing and playing with all your friends that are with you.

For me, this is his (and Emerson Lake & Palmer), best song. Sadly when the record was released, they radio picked "Ce La Vie" and omited this one, and when they went on tour, it was rarely played.
From King Crimson through ELP, his voice is endless. The emotion in his singing went through ones heart,
Yes! Life doesn't make them like this any more. Sad, really
Never heard him other than on that Christmas song, clueless till now 😂

I saw ELP three times. They still bring tears.

Though your world is torn apart
For a moment changes all things
And to end is but to start
And if your journey's unrewarded
May your God lift up your heart
You are windblown
But you are mine "

This last verse is the most important of all.
God bless you Greg.

We played this song at our wedding in 1996. It was the the second marriage for both of us and the song affected us deeply.
Virkelig god sang
So stirring! And done in 2016!
In the notes it shows Works V1 in '97, that would be '77.
Caught the show in Toronto.
Aloha from Hawaii 🏝️
I got turned onto ELP in the early 70' s as a teen in Miami ( I am 65 now ), great music then & now, as a teen & older guy, one of the great rock bands from the 70's.
