During the warring era, there weren’t any ninja villages. Each clan was on their own but there were normal villages back then. The 1st and the 2nd hokage were from the Senju clan, the 3rd from Sarutobi clan. When the leaf ninja village was created, many clans joined in including the hyuga clan which was not the case earlier. BTW Hashirama and Tobirama were princes or lord of their clan, Tsunade is called Princess because she’s from a royal lineage. Same goes for Hinata, she is a princess of her clan. While they don’t hold any political power now that each clan came under a village system with an elected kage and a feudal lord, their influence within their own clan is still relevant which is why they are still addressed with the proper title.
