  • Today, we are taking a look at the newest game from Ryan Laukat and Red Raven Games, Sleeping Gods!
This is a story driven campaign game, which is something we usually like a lot!
Our track record with Red Raven hasn’t been that good, so we was a bit unsure how we would like this.
We have now played a full campaign, and are ready to give you our thoughts!
    We hope you’ll enjoy!

My wife and I have been playing this game for a few weeks now, we just keep it out on our gaming table and get in a few hours a week, and we both love it. I think your comparisons to 7th Continent and Tainted Grail are good.. what makes Sleeping Gods better than those in my opinion is often times in Sleeping Gods when you fail, you still get to follow through with your choice, you just suffer some bad consequences... where normally failure in an adventure board game means you just have to try it again OR you missed it and can never do it again (which we all know nobody follows those rules :) ). It also doesn't feel like this game is out to get you, while 7th Continent and Tainted Grail felt like there was only 1 correct choice which was impossible to deduce, and all other choices are horrible failures.

I'm new to the channel, but I really love the dynamic between Johana and Cinnamon. Keep up the great work!

My wife and two of our boys played this the week before last on vacation (Euro translation: holiday) and we had an absolute blast. We agree with y'all that the combat got same-y, but we still enjoyed the puzzle aspect of it; especially the boys. We also got mildly annoyed with having to shed our abilities every time through the event deck, but getting to keep our added character skills was a trade-off we could live with.
I would have liked to have seen more than just a couple of the characters repeatedly referred to in the adventure book, but although there was no over-arching story, to us it was actually a bonus because it allowed us to create the story in our heads. We have had lots of discussions since filling in the gaps with what we think is going on, character motivations, etc. and that has been almost as much fun as playing the game.
Thanks for the review! We really enjoy your channel and comparing our experience to yours when a game pops up that we own.

With your tendency towards heavy Euro's, the review was pretty much what I'd expected. We're about to finish up our 3rd campaign (4 players at ~12-14 hours per campaign) and looks like the group wants to give it another go afterwards. The world is HUGE, and have yet to try tackling any of the dungeons. No real issues with replayability so far. The overlap between sessions hasn't been all that noticeable. I expect we'll probably switch this out for Unsettled once that arrives.

So happy to hear you are enjoying it 🤩
Heavy euros and story driven games are my two favorite genres, but if I had to choose, I’d end up going the euro route, hehe!
      Thank you for watching! 🥳

My wife and I love this game. We played it twice back-to-back. We'll play it again in a couple months. Thanks for the review.

Wow, that is great! So happy to hear you are enjoying it :D Do you have the expansion? Does it feel as «fresh» on the second playthrough?

@@BoardGamingRamblings It did for us. In the 2nd game we intentionally explored area we didn't in the 1st game. I backed the Kickstarter, so I have it all.

I really need to get this to the table. We’ve been busy getting ready to move, so I’ve been waiting until I can dive into it for a few days straight. 😃

I missed the Kickstarter and really regret it. I really want this one! Great video.

I don’t think there was much KS exclusives, so hopefully you’ll get to get a retail copy! Hope you’ll like it :)

The only Kickstarter exclusives were token upgrades. Metal coins, wooden resources, a battle mat, that's about it. Nothing worth missing out on the game for, just grab the retail version.

Do you guys know what I need to track down to get the upgrades that the Kickstarter released, or if I buy the retail will it have those components? I think there is a Caves expansion but also some nice coins? Maybe I am wrong. Do you know what I need separately?

    • @BoardGamingRamblings
      @BoardGamingRamblings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don’t know how to help you there, sadly! Check out some fb groups and ask maybe? We have the retail edition, and didn’t feel like we where missing anything :)

There’s a LOT of totems in the game (75 I think in the base game?) - you would definitely have to play it many times to see everything.

    • @BoardGamingRamblings

Yeah, that is absolutely awesome :D Loads of replay value for people who want to play many times!

It's good to know that it's kind of short. I might have to look into it more after this video. Just don't have time for another 100 hour game

I love the game, bit found it to be quite hard. I was constantly almost dying or at least it felt like it. 😂 And that even though I made some rules mistakes in the beginning that made it a little easier.
I love the open world aspect of it. Will try to play it with my group once that is possible again.

After playing the whole of Near and Far, being blown away by the components and attention to detail... But absolutely completely disliking the game, I will never play a Ryan Laukat game again. Not knocking the game, but it's of no interest to me. I can only speak for Near & Far, but if you tried to win it was boring, and if you tried to experience the stories and the map, you'd lose. Certainly better as a co-op but I'm totally not interested in trying anything like this. The same reason I would never play 7th Continent, Gloomhaven etc etc.
Nice to hear a balanced review though! Everybody else has been falling over themselves to praise this game.

The best Ryan Laukat game I had played before this was Empires of the Void II. I was not a fan of Abowe and Below or Near or Far either. This was a lot better, but not a top 50/100 game for me (I think) I do love Gloomhaven, though ;)

Given the errors, bad writing, stupid stripping away twice, tacked on combat I think the most annoying thing was the total lack of QC done by RRG. It was like go print the errata and sod off. Index page missing half the keywords.
RRG has no love for their own game.
    So why should you?
And what is a cRPG without a main story? Exactly.
Very limited review in spite of your 15 hours of playing.
    For me RRG never again.
Do not buy this edition of Sleeping Gods!
    Wait for the revised edition.
