    I grew up in South Africa during Apartheid, and attended Rhodes University at the time of the State of Emergency. Hearing him speak was an incredible experience. He has spent his life working for peace in our beautiful country. Once, he jumped into the middle of a lynch mob and saved a person who the crowd believed was a police informant from being burned and stoned to death. He stood up time and again against the brutality and repression of the Apartheid government, and spoke up for peace, equality and freedom, at a time when doing so could lead to a person being tortured and murdered by the state. In more recent times he has stood up against the ANC's poor record on delivering education and housing for the poor, and has been scathing of their attempts to undermine our democratic constitution. He is one of my greatest heroes. The haters in this thread are just ignorant trolls.

    @nothingbutjustice Number 1 - He has never been a racist and actually negotiated a multiracial govt. Number 2 He was hated by the black freedom movement because he advocated peaceful protest when they wanted pay back in blood. They all thought he was a moderate and supported in part because the state hated him. Number 3 He has never ever called for slaughter of any human being. He believes we are made from God and therefore loves all. Number 4 ......you are just mumbling and not making sense.

    @nothingbutjustice Thanks for clarifying a bit of your history. It still doesnt explain to me why you hate Tutu so much when you have no relation to South Africa. He kept preaching and leading us while all our other leaders were murdered, jailed and exiled. They did not murder him because he was respected overseas and was an leader in the church and head of the council of churches. This is the only thing that kept him alive or they would of skinned him. He was our only mouth piece. So why u hate

    @nothingbutjustice.........Arch Tutu has been travelling the world helping to draw attention to the injustice suffered by the people of South Africa by their cruel white government. In the UK he was actually stationed in a white church and their kindness blew him away. The respect and compassion of white people in the UK gave him faith to believe change is possible. The reality in SA was far different and the brutal treatment in everyday life was not even bearable. You obviously are no from SA!!

  • @moliebabageorge
    @moliebabageorge 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @nothingbutjustice To everyone reading the above comments make sure they are read in context. Tutu was very vocal on Israel as they created their own apartheid regime in the East. Their short term memory had forgotten how they were humiliated by the Nazi yet they are doing the same to the Palestinians. The Palestinian issue gave birth to Al Qaeda and the hatred against the US and now the arms race in the Arab world.

  • @moliebabageorge
    @moliebabageorge 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @nothingbutjustice Can you do the same? Tutu has been active in the defence of human rights and uses his high profile to campaign for the oppressed. He has campaigned to fight AIDS, tuberculosis, poverty, racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism in 1986, the Pacem in Terris Award in 1987, the Sydney Peace Prize in 1999, the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2005[1] and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

    Your praise is less than substantive for this reason. For all this "love and reconciliation," the people of South Africa are still waiting for economic justice on an island of plenty. After all, SA is touted as the largest economy on the continent of Africa. So save the fulsome praise for someone who seems to be making quite a living from his "sermons." For some remarkable reason, he is unremarkable in bringing about economic justice!

    • @joemechanic2751
      @joemechanic2751 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, it seems to me that you missed the whole point of his "sermon." Your comment is entirely contradictory to what he said. You may have picked up on that if you not only listened but heard what he was saying. I am not a believer in God; however, I do believe in the human spirit. What he spoke about is not some great revelation and should be glaringly obvious, but we are humans. As history demonstrated, sometimes we need to hear the obvious from people we have elevated to greatness to give our heads a shake and say to ourselves, "duh, should have known that!"
      But....maybe you are right, economic justice shouldn't be the responsibility of the elected government of SA but should be the responsibility of a single man of the cloth. Makes perfect sense to me.

    • @mattcarroll2135
      @mattcarroll2135 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If only Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu could achieve 1% of the economic justice that Jay Young has achieved with his snide TH-cam comments. What a world we would live in!

    Archbishop Tutus ability to educate, enlighten, and deconstruct in a paragraph or two the most complex issues without ever dumbing down; to reference the unacceptable with tact and a steely reserve wrapped in humour and compassion makes him for me the most spiritually and politically effective communicator alive bar none.

    @nothingbutjustice Iam assuming you a white South African? Iam just trying to figure out where all your hatred is coming from. My other question is whether you have lived through the violence in the 80's. This would validate your understanding of what went down in SA. My 3rd question is whether you have contributed toward an equal society is SA by donating to charities, Standing up for equal rights, or have done any volunteer work? This would prove your commitment and humility. Thanks for answer

    You'll find Christians all over the world, sometimes in the most unlikely places.
    We are all far from perfect, and thus have no right to judge other's soul. God bless us all, help us all, forgive us all, and have mercy on us all. Amen.
    And Amen to that quote, gray.

    This is an inspiring, visionary talk by Archbishop Desmund Tutu. I so enjoy his ability to weave in our biblical ancestors, Peter and his denial of Christ 3 times, Paul, who originally persecuted Christians, yet God forgave them and helped to make them leaders in the early church. God made us all, God forgives us all--what a concept. We humans struggle with this so much, especially when it comes to our enemies.

    So lovely to hear this now in the U.S. when white supremest violence threatens to divide our nation and push us toward fascism! Thank you Desmond Tutu! It takes such courage and hard work to actually love and forgive those who cause great harm, and, in a nonviolent way, to hold them accountable.
