      When he was "Safe" again he climbs on Daddys lap like "oh thank God! Daddys here and I'm safe!" lol! SAVE ME DADDY! Better off really, when they like to go outside then they sometimes take off and get lost or hurt. Mine ran right for a car one time, just missed him. They aren't dogs, that's for sure.

    Harness and leash adaption takes a while for a lot of cats. Much better to do that in the house for a couple of weeks before venturing outside. Too many new things at once. You guys do a great job with Laz. Congrats are well deserved.

      @thecatlady2710 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Agreed. Catmantoo on youtube has great training videos for cats and even one for walking one on a harness and lead.

    • @NRodovsky
      @NRodovsky 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree with this completely. I would add treats to the process, and I would take him for "walks" on his harness and lead around the house and backyard every day or every other day, but I'd wait to start taking him outside until the weather cools. Definitely keep the kids involved s much as possible since that was clearly important to Lazzy!

    • @AlexandraK1
      @AlexandraK1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, that's how I trained one of my cats. Then I could walk him pretty much like a dog. But you have to train a lot indoors first. Use treats to make them understand that they're supposed to follow you and make them see it as a positive experience. etc. Step one I would say is just to get them used to wearing the harness without a leash indoors ... then you add the leash and take it step by step from there.

      My cats always bother me. when i went out to buy something or visit neighbours, they will follow me . Not wanting to let me go. I love them so much. Unfortunately i have to live in other city for studying in college now. And i'm not allowed to bring cats in my boarding house, and it's difficult to take care of them here so i left them in my mother's hand. She hates cats 😁 poor them that she never pet them. They miss me, i'm sure. The oldest cat is saved by me 😀 he almost died . This year almost never happened for him too.

    • @werpires
      @werpires 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +BRYAN351 It depends on the cat though, some cats are genuinly unhappy as indoor cats and you have no other choice but to let them out, especially if they are the only cat in the house (cats aren't supposed to live alone, even with humans around). I guess you were just lucky that your cats managed to get used to being inside doors.

    • @turbocat1984
      @turbocat1984 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My cats would (and do!) tear the place apart if they can't go out!

    • @werpires
      @werpires 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +BRYAN351 Not really, my friends had a cat who wouldn't stop meowing and scratching at the door for MONTHS. They even moved somewhere more safe to let him out because he seeemed so unhappy while his sister was perfectly content with being an inside cat. When he finally was able to go outside he was much happier.
      And your cat disliking the male cat can be because you didn't let them get used to each other slowly. They see another cat as a threat to their territory and hence act aggressive. It takes weeks if not months to slowly get them used to each other to the point where they don't fight.
      But all in all it depends on how long your cat has been living alone. With time the cat "forgets" how to act around other cats if they had been living as a single cat for too long and you can't get them used to another cat again.

    so precious! my mom's cat behaves just the same way when he gets leashed, slinking along his belly. THANK YOU for not dragging him by the leash at all, it hurts my heart when I see people doing that with their cat (except tugging them out of danger, like when they try to go under cars)
    if you want him to get used to it, I think more short, calm outings like this would be wonderful for him. he didn't seem agitated, just nervous.

    Your beautiful cat is sooooo gentle. My sweet and beloved 14-year old female cat Candy had refused to wear a cat collar when she turned 2-years old. My other beautiful Himalayan Siamese male cat who is 10-years old still lets me put those collars with a bell ( helps alert the birds who visit our backyard) . Our cats didn't like the harness with straps, they much prefer the velcro vest type harness. We let them wear it around the house to get used to it and started by going just outside the front door for a minute, and each time we went a little farther for a little longer. Now one of our cats is so excited when he sees the harness that he puts his head through the neck hole himself. But when we first tried, we used the same type of harness you are using with the same result. Just a nervous crouching kitty.

    Cute video. Try having him in the harness in the house for like a week. Then add the leash in the house and let him get used to that being attached. Then take him for walks in the house. Lastly, take him for super short walks outside, like a couple of minutes. This is a "Build up to it" kinda thing. I taught my cats to walk outside on leashes. You have to go at Laz's comfort pace, not yours. Soon he'll be good on the leash. Baby steps.

    I have a huge flame point Siamese kitty that looks just like this. He's very calm. Although he won't let me walk him, I sometimes use a harness and leash rather than a carrier to take him to the vet. Unfortunately the harness pinches the back of the neck which instinctively immobilizes a cat. You can actually do this with a clothespin.

    Laz is a cutie. Almost all cats can be trained to do many things. There are many videos you could watch here on U-Tube. I've watched cats be trained to go walking on the harness, use a toilet and flush it, do acrobatic stuff and many more things. It just takes a commitment and a long time! 🌞

    He didn't hate it, he was just adjusting. You chose the perfect time to take him out as cats are at their most active at dawn & dusk, as they're "Crepuscular" as opposed to Nocturnal or Durinnial (spell-check hates that word). Walking cats is all about letting them explore with all their senses even if they're not moving. Get a longer leash & just let him go at his own pace. You may need to get him a vest instead of the harness though, as my sister's cat shot out of his when he got a scare, the vests are more secure & more comfortable for Lazzie. Bringing the kids out was genius! He loves you guys so much.

    Tips for cats on leashes;
    Let them wear the harness around the house so they can get used to wearing it. It was lopsided when he started walking around, meaning it may have not been tight enough around the sides. Cats like to take their precious time, so if you want them to get used to the outdoors you have to let them sit there for a while so they can get used to the smells. Besides that, you did a good job waiting for it to get a little dark, letting him find high places, and allowing people he knows with familiar smells be around him.

    I am currently harness training (one of) my cats. Our other two cats are indoor cats, but this one is from a previous home where he was an outdoor cat. It is important to get Lazzi comfortable around the house with the harness first before taking him outside. I've been at it for almost a month and a half with my kitty lol. See if that helps! Some cats just don't like the harness, I think it depends on each individual cat!!! Good luck! =)

  • @egagnon9994
    @egagnon9994 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    OMG!... Lazzy is sooooo cute! Purring like a little machine! I just melted!... As for the harness, you need to habituate him in the house first. Put it on a few minutes, let him get used to the sensation, give him lots of treats then repeat. Same with the leash. Attach it to the harness inside the house and let him get used to it. You went a little bit too fast with the whole process. His pupils are dilated, his ears are pinned back, he is walking low to the ground and his tail is low which means he is fearful and uncomfortable. You should have started with the front yard and not carry him to the park. Cats are very territorial. They love to mark with their scent. That's how they find their way back home. In the park he didn't have his scent... Also, the leash is too short... This is a cat, don't expect him to heal. It's more him that will chose where he wants to go.... He WILL be a walking outdour cat if you take the time!... I had a cat that LOVED to go out for a walk. Whenever I would take his harness and leash out it would act like a dog! It took a couple of weeks to get him use to it though... Last thing, keep an eye for any dog off leash!

    So Precious! Just be careful when doing this because no harness is 100% secure, so if he seems to be getting really spooked I would pick him up. They can slip out of the harness by walking backwards while the leash pulls it over their head. It only takes a second if they spook. I don't think he would stray too far from his family though! Not trying to scare you off of it because walking can be a great thing for them as long as your aware to be careful!

    Baby steps! Everything will have to become familiar over a few weeks. My cat started with just being put in the harness and given a treat. Then after a few days I attached the leash for a few minutes, followed by a treat. Then I put her outside the door in the outfit and gave her a treat and brought her right back inside. Somedays I was able to do this in the morning and evening. When she was ok being outside the house, then I lured her a few feet with treats. And then we were done for the day. Don't give up, it takes time and lots of treats! Have fun!

    We started leash training our kitten right when we brought him home at 8 weeks and that is the best time to start when they are young. It took about a month and then after that he would sit in front of my dad and meow like to say hey take me for a walk mister lol. We had no problems walking our cat on a leash because we started him young and he adjusted well to it.

    The two cats I used to have and walked on leashes were started out very young. Started with just putting the harness on them and letting them crocodile death roll for weeks off and on. I would start with the harness on for very short periods and increase it to maybe 1-2 hours at a time. They eventually tolerated it. Notice I didn't say like LOL. Then I slowly started them outside. They would still try to squirm out of the harness but really loved being outside more.

    LOL I don't know what was the best part... trying to get his harness on with those gorgeous paws or the fact he wanted to be back inside other than the slide part lol

    Also, if hes an indoor cat, like rarely goes out, hes going to really be wide eyed to all new sights & sounds, etc. Owl was mainly an outdoor cat when we got him from a lady who rehomed him. So, even though he was used to all that, we were in totally new areas, with all new things. Your kitty did an awesome job & walked, didnt just lay down & not move.

    my dads siamese cat walks on a leash she loves it but my dad left her with the harness on for a few hours every day just to get her used to wearing it, then took her for small walks, his burmese LOVED it lol

    Our Bonito became harness trained because he loved the outdoors. We told him if he wanted out, it was on the harness. No harness, no out.
    Laz, I think the harness and leash will work best for you in the backyard for evening meanders. You know, when everyone is out there for barbeque or just enjoying the evening air. It's fine to just want your own little patch.
    I remember watching my Dad trying to harness Bonito. Always a huge wrestling match. Then I would sigh, take the harness from Dad, and have it on the cat in about 5 seconds.

    BWAHAHA. Cats get paralyzed with a harness. Maybe get him used to the harness inside the house. A few minutes at a time around feeding time so he gets a positive association with the "strait jacket." Is Lazarus microchipped? In case he ever decides to go out the front door on his own... What about getting him used to wearing a collar with your phone number on it?

      Agree you on the microchip. Very good idea to get Laz micro chipped and make sure its registered. Best to also get a collar with ID. Laz was pretty much dead when they found him and its very apparent that he is so attached to this family, but better safe than sorry.

      Lol the same with my cat. I put on the harness, and he just falls to the ground and sticks out his legs. You can practically hear him saying, "I can't move! If I can't move, I can't go outside, right? *wink, wink*"😂
